Uh, I found something. I just opened my copy of the book to use for reference (I do that when I draw fanworks)
in CH 72 when Ruby visits Ai's grave, she comments that Aqua's been different lately, as if it feels like "something that's been possessing him has fallen off", this is when Aqua decided to be free from revenge and have a normal life and pursue his own happiness, thus losing his star eyes completely.
