Kuo Chui in The Brave Archer II (1978)

Happy Birthday to Kuo Chui!! He turns 71 today! 🥳 He is by far one of the most talented people that I have ever seen on screen. One of the first things I noticed about him was his smile. It gave him a charismatic and friendly appearance, especially since it lit up the majority of his face. His acrobatic skills were beyond phenomenal, as were his fight scenes. You can always see his Taiwanese opera training as work with his fast-paced, flowing moves that often seem to feature so many in a sequence. Although that is no surprise, since even he has said they could do fighting routines with over 200 moves in them. His acting is equally impressive since he has so much diversity, playing characters like Chao Pai-Tun in the Brave Archer films, minus the last one, and Mad Dog from Hard Boiled. I remember when I watched their films for the first time that I always looked forward to seeing what kind of acrobatics, weapons work, etc., Kuo Chui would do next. It was such a magical experience. Even after watching the movies countless times, the effect never changed. Sometimes I find more little details or things that I may not have noticed to appreciate. It's all thanks to his skill set and dedication to his craft. Even the fights he choreographs are so well put together for endless entertainment. I’m sure it goes without saying that I adore the Venom Mob. Kuo Chui has always been one of my dad’s favorites, and it’s safe to say he became one of mine too. I have seen several videos of him in recent times behind the scenes and even older ones. It seems like he’s always kept his fun and charming nature. I always like how well he works with others. I remember in a video about Brotherhood of the Wolf, he said that it never bothered him if someone had little to no film or martial arts experience. As long as they could perform his choreography, then he would pick them. He’s truly amazing.

Is it just me, or is there a subtle change in emotion from Gao Ji (Sun Chien) in the scene above versus the one below? To me, it feels like he gets more annoyed or irritated when Meng Tianxia (Kuo Chui) grabs him for the second time. It's almost as if he is trying to keep up the demeanor and facade that he’s had for the whole film, even though he is clearly not very happy about being grabbed. It’s just the vibe I get from how Sun Chien laughs and smiles and the way he pulls Kuo Chui’s arm off his shoulder in terms of acting choice. It feels less friendly and understanding, imo.

Happy Halloween (if you celebrate it)!! Instead of candy, I am handing out pictures of them 😌

I just thought this picture of Yang Hsiung was so cute 🥹

I am so sad that I missed his birthday. So, happy belated birthday to Lung Tien-Hsiang!! According to the sources I found, it was supposed to be November 6,1955!
