I think I might be breaking with hardcore BuckTommy shippers here but I do think Eddie has elements of his story that can be read as compulsory heterosexuality and therefore queercoding. Sure, Buck has always been way more explicit in the teases that he might have a little sugar in the bowl (Tapeworm Guy, Eddie, Josh, TK), but …
Eddie’s story leans itself extremely well to the idea that he’s gay but he’s tried really hard his entire life not to be and to instead be the picture perfect family man and his efforts to do that have only backfired. He describes his life as “suffocating but nice and warm. He refers to dating his son’s teacher as something he “thought could work” that Chris loves her so eventually he thought he would too. Guzman has also mentioned that Eddie’s standards for women revolve around Chris and Chris only (“this is a nice woman with good values and my kid seems to like her) rather than any real attraction or desire for companionship.
It can also be read as a straight man who has only ever truly been in love once, it ended tragically, and now he is so focussed on recreating that exact love that he’s sabotaged his chances at loving someone new because it wasn’t exactly how it was with The One. Nowhere is that more explicit than in the Kim subplot, where he literally recreates his first date with Shannon with Kim. His difficulty in maintaining relationships with women outside of “letting them mother Chris” seems in large part due to the way his father was gone so much for work and that’s his model for what a family should look like. We see that following his parents’ model just doesn’t work in his and Shannon’s case from their argument in season 2 where she said she “needed a partner and coparent and you were in Afghanistan!” and in part, his lionization of his and Shannon’s love has resulted in him recreating a system that didn’t even work the first time and until he can reckon with that reality, he’ll never have a successful relationship with a woman.
I think both are completely valid readings of his story thus far and I don’t think what you ship should effect which one you think is the Correct reading. I don’t think we should be shutting down the very real evidence for both readings over ships is what I’m saying
