August, 1950
Every August, Busan holds a seaside carnival, complete with all your favourite games, and you’ve been coming here since you were a child.
As a gift for your eighteenth birthday next week, your mother agreed to let you come with your school friends instead of your big brothers, and so you’re in the midst of the merriment, following behind your classmates, far too enthralled with the multicoloured lights overhead to really pay attention to what they are saying. Not that they ever say anything you particularly resonate with. The soft music is drifting through the grounds, dancing through the occasional screams from the bumper cars, the laughter of people huddled around the stalls. No place on earth makes you feel safer, or happier, than the carnival.
