Ellie woke with a wail in the dead of night and almost instantly Danny phased through the wall from his room to hers next door. The tiny child sobbed, red faced and curled around the stuffed bunny in her bed. Danny instantly floated to her side and reached out to gently scoop her into his arms.
“Oh Honey, shhhhh, it's just a bad dream. Mama's here.” Danny cooed gently at her.
Danny never thought before Ellie that he would ever refer to himself that way, but it seemed right despite being a gendered term. He didn't mind as much as he thought he would. Ellie didn't at all care about gender nuance as she nuzzled into Danny's neck and cried miserably, hugging his neck tightly.
“How about a song Sweetheart?” Danny spoke softly to her, she didn't reply but hugged him tighter, her crying slowing down.

At last Ellie relaxed completely, sinking back into dreamland with no more fussing. Instead of tucking her back into bed Danny sat in the chair still rocking with her. He closed his tired eyes and hummed a song softly to her.
When he grew too tired he simply phased through the wall again and brought her to his bed to sleep together for the night. He felt better keeping her close to him after hearing her awful cries. It just broke his heart to hear her so upset, he just couldn't bear it.
