Cooper smiles even during times he shouldn't, because he was criticized by his family of not smiling enough.

So in retaliation, he smiles to the point it made his parents uncomfortable to be around him.

He found himself a special someone whom he can relax & stop smiling. He still has the bad habit of smiling even when not necessary.
