tw: tic disorders and tourettes syndrome

ik this isn't my usual blog stuff but pls reblog if u see this. as someone with a tic disorder, i wna try and clear a few things up <33 (if ive made any mistakes, pls feel free to correct me)

if you only notice someone ticcing when tics are being discussed or someone else is ticcing, this DOES NOT MEAN THEYRE FAKING! discussing or seeing someone else tic is a common trigger.

if someone is ticcing e.g. banging their fist against their chest, don't try to restrain them because it can be very overwhelming and uncomfortable, best way i can think to describe it is like when someone is holding your nose and you can't breathe. if they're hurting themselves the best thing would be to get a pillow or something and put it in the way so they hit that instead.

a tic disorder and tourettes syndrome is not the same. im not an expert, but i believe the difference is that tourettes has quite strict guidelines that need to be met and a tic disorder is when it doesnt tick all the boxes. both can be disabling and long term or life long. there are also different types of tic disorders.

there is a difference between redirecting or suppressing tics and just choosing not to tic. there is no on or off switch, like how theres a difference between masking autism and choosing not to have it.

• Having Tics Alongside Dissociative Identity Disorder

For us, our motor tic disorder affects the entire brain. This means that it not only affects the host, but every one who fronts. I've noticed, however, that it affects everyone differently. For example, my tics are usually very frequent and involve uncontrollable body movements, such as hitting myself, and random words and noises. Phil on the other hand mainly has one frequent vocal tic that sounds like an owl. He also tics a lot less frequently than me. We are honestly not sure why, this is just our experience. -Pine

Allow me to impart some knowledge upon y'all.

Tics are not cute. They are extremely painful, and you calling them cute is devaluing my pain.

Please stop fetishizing my disability.

one thing about having tics in nyc is that no one cares At All

its very freeing to me, in a way. there’s still that little bit of fear that i’ll get misunderstood or hurt in some way, but people here really have other things to worry about and my tics on the subway are not nearly the strangest thing theyve seen in the last 20 minutes

especially when i’m with friends in public too, they never react to my tics anymore so everyone who does notice is just like “oh okay theyre fine” and move on with their day

way better than back in the suburbs where one singular strange thing will have you being stared at until you leave
