Brainstorming.

“How was bed rest?”

“Waste of time. I got Magmus to—”

“Magmus?”

“Goodley sent me a golem.”

“Lucky.”

Sunny pursed her lips. “Not sure I’d use that word but, sure.”

Harmony shot her an apologetic look.

“Anyway, I got it to bring me a ton of books on the history of the Tourney so I could maybe get some info on how it all started, but it was a bust. All the stuff that Thomas found out? Not a mention about it in the books. Not even in the journal Redstone donated to the school. And he was supposed to keep everything in there.”

“Did you check the journal for any charms or traces? Sometimes a piece of paper only shows you what it wants to show you.”

“Tried everything. So either it’s a dead end, or we’re dealing with sage level magic skills.”

“I’d put my money on the latter.” Harmony said, “Redstone was the strongest out of the Sage Five for a reason.”

“And apparently he liked his secrets.”

Memories.

Sunny took his hand. “Show me.”

Maxi opened the door up to an endless hallway that spiraled out of sight. There were countless doors with varying labels carved into the wood. Sunny assumed they were his memories. “It’s all the way down. Don’t let go of my hand.”

Sunny tightened her grip. Maxi led her up and down the spiral until they stopped in front of a looming door padded down with locks and bolts. Maxi’s hand trembled in hers. It shocked her to realize that even the strongest sages could be afraid.

Sunny squeezed his hand. “I’m with you.”

Maxi released a heavy breath, then raised his free hand and aimed it at the door. He curled his fingers in the air. The sound of bolts unlocking sounded through the hallway. Sunny took a step back when the chains and bolts fell to the floor in a loud clangor.

The door cracked open on its own. Like it was daring them to come in.

Maxi pulled her with him and pushed open the door. They stepped inside. At first the room was dark, but then it slowly filled with color. A large office space was then created out of the color pallet. Maxi guided them off to the side, near the window behind the office desk. He walked through the office with familiarity. That struck her as odd. Locks and bolts had encased the memory, so he couldn't relive it. But thinking back on her own worst memory, she understood. Just because she kept it locked up, didn’t mean she freed herself from its clutches.

Sunny looked out the window. The Shrieking Hollows were in clear sight. Her eyes went wide. So that meant—

A door swung open and slammed into the wall. Sunny spun around. A much older looking version of Maxi stepped into the office looking unkempt. Strands of hair had broken loose from the bun that sat low on his neck. He slammed his fist on the desk. “Damn it!” More strands came loose.

Sunny backed into the windowsill.

“Don’t worry.” Maxi said, “He can’t see or hear you. It’s only a memory.”

Tell that to Sunny’s racing heart.

Faces.

The sneer on her face smoothed into something soft at a terrifying pace. It sickened Sunny, knowing just how fast Eaglewood could change faces to get what she wanted.

“Princess...”

Even her voice had a softness to it

Warning.

“Don’t.” Sunny tried to warn her, but it was too late.

The ground beneath Sunny and Harmony’s feet caved in. They scrambled to hold their footing as they sunk into the shallow cavity. On their left, dozens of green-glowing vines sprung from the earth. Harmony staggered out in front of Sunny and lifted a trembling arm. A shield of fire—flawed with cracks, and tainted by a dwindling red glow—materialized in front of them.

Sunny felt her stomach churn.

It wouldn’t be enough.

Solitude.

Sunny’s book fell to the ground. And soon enough, she joined it. With her back pressed to the wall, she sunk to the floor with her knees tucked into her chest. Tears spotted her vision. She didn’t know what to do. It felt like the entire world had been set aflame by a fire she created. And now, she was forced to sit back and watch everything turn to ashes.

When she finally found it in herself to get up, she didn’t go to class. For the rest of the day she sat alone in the misfit’s greenhouse, trying to come up with a way out. And by the time the final bell sounded through the school, she had found a solution.

A solution that would ensure everyone’s safety.

Eye of the Storm.

“I won’t ask questions about why—everyone’s better off without her meddling—but I’m curious. How’d you manage to get out without leaving behind a magical trace?”

Sunny sent him a strained smile. “If I told you, then you’d have to kill me.”

A troubled frown crossed his face.

“Tell me I’m wrong,” she begged him.

He didn’t rise to meet the challenge.

Character Introduction Card...

image

Thomas Hale is one of the main characters from my current wip, Sunny Mage. He’s the baby boy of the group and somehow he’s the most responsible out of them all.

Some facts about him:

Grew up in Dallas, Texas with his mom and dad.

He’s a hollow (a person born without a magical core), but managed to get accepted into Redstone Academy based on his strong application. He can’t use magic naturally so he uses a grass-style wand that has a core embedded in it that allows him use of artificial magic. And, like Sunny, he gets bullied at the academy.

Quirks: Obsessed with the Tourney and his Redstone bolo tie. He keeps the tie on his bedside stand to remind him of home and the school he loves so dear.

He and Sunny have a big sis/lil bro relationship. When it comes to him, she’ll tear the world upside down just to make him smile.

Snippet of Thomas from my wip (taken from chapter 20):

Ellory did a double take. “Is that a sock toe?”

“Yep.”

“Not even the whole sock? Just the toe.”

“Yep.” Thomas repeated, face set aflame.

...

“Do I wanna know how you got that?”

Thomas eyed her bag of stardust. “Do I?”

“Fair enough.”

Here’re some bonus pics of him (+Sunny) because I’m a little obsessed:

Heads Up Seven Up

Shout out to @on-noon for the tag. Much love, much love.

I’ll be tagging @caligraphyzev @cafe-and-diner and anyone else who wants to join the game. No pressure, as always!

Here’s a snippet from the last seven lines of my current wip [Sunny Mage], taken from chapter 48:

Sunny rolled her eyes, “Please don’t tell her that. She’s got a big enough head.”

“I won’t.”

With a final fleeting look, Ervin started his walk back to the campus. Sunny stayed back a while. She admired the way the light hit Lake Spell just the right way to make it glisten. Above her, the sky was clear.

Sunny took her time to bask in that peace, before tomorrow snatched it from her.

Heads Up Seven Up

Two for two! Thanks for the tag @writingpotato07.

Tagging: @bloodsoaking @aritany @adie-dee and anyone else who wants to join in! Don’t feel pressured to join though.

Here’s a snippet from my wip [Sunny Mage]. Taken from Interlude III - The Horn & The Halo - Reprise:

“I beat him.”

“Bullshit.”

Sunny laughed. “I’m serious!”

“How?”

“C’mon. Can’t be that surprising.”

“He’s got serious skill. Was it a full on fight? He must’ve slipped up.”

Sunny hated it when Harmony was right. But there were also a handful of times when Sunny loved it when Harmony was right. It was very confusing.

Heads Up Seven Up Tag

I’ll be tagging: @jamieanovels @isabelcanasauthor @diemohnblume @maybenow22 @writingpotato07 @cheywritesx @bellatrixie00 and anyone else who wants to join.

This is a snippet from my current wip Sunny Mage, taken from Interlude II - THE HORN & THE HALO:

“Your mom’s sins aren’t yours.”

“They still happened.”

Sunny balled up her fists. “You know what happens to the champions, and you still wanna win this thing?"

"Course I do." Harmony pried open Sunny's balled-up fists and let the fabric of her collar loose. It hung low at Harmony's cleavage, all wrinkled and tainted. Much like tonight. “I can’t change my last name or the family I came from, but maybe I can make it honorable again, into a name that I’d be proud to wear. You should get that.”

That's the thing, Sunny did. She understood the itch to push towards being something more. To become something that no one ever imagined. Sunny should be happy. Harmony finally had a goal worth fighting for. But all Sunny felt was the foulness of dread seeping into her bones.

“I’ll see you out there.” Harmony left her alone at the windowsill.

Sunny watched her go.

Find The Word Tag

Quick shoutout to @on-noon for the tag. Much love!

I’ll be tagging: @cabaretofwords @spuddlespud @jezifster and anyone else who wants to join.

These are your words: dead, runaway, forest, tower, and blanket.

My words are: claw, afford, hold, ruin, and longing. All these snippets came from my current wip, Sunny Mage.

Claw

Thomas put the necklace on. The chilling look on the kid’s face had sold it for him. That wasn’t a look that could be easily imitated. That kid had been through something and had managed to claw his way out.

Afford

A knot of unease twisted inside Sunny’s stomach. With the next level fast approaching, and the devious plans their enemies had cooked up for them, Sunny couldn’t afford to lose an ally.

Hold (I have like 74 of these, holy shit...)

Sunny threw her arms up. “Hold up, in your example the snowball still made direct contact with the flask. Yeah, the energy was conserved, but the objects still physically touched. So how can I transfer energy to something that’s out of reach?”

Ruin

“Ruins the vibe.” Harmony said, “They want the audience to see us the way we really are: damaged and resilient. My older brother, Cam, competed a couple years ago in the semifinals. The guy who became the champion got hit with a pipe to the chest during the level. It missed his heart, but it nicked the bottom of his left lung.”

Longing

Despite what hollow fairytale books said about Mermaids, about them being kind hearted creatures who broke out into song, they were far from the truth. In real life, Mermaids were worse than sirens. Because at least sirens lulled their prey in with peaceful songs and longing looks—giving them at least a sense of security before they pounced.

When anyone asks why I write mainly fantasy 😂🤷🏽‍♀️

The best thing about fantasy is I can write whatever I want cause I can just make shit up on the spot and declare it canon like it’s nothing
