What are the best investments you’ve made with your appearance?

Investing in the Perfect Blonde Closure.

What Are The Best Investments Youve Made With Your Appearance?

Because my natural hair is black, I spent all of high school and a bit of college wearing a jet-black sew-in, and, well, it looked awful. Turns out, black clashes with my palette (I can't even wear black clothes without looking a bit dull; it's depressing). The moment I lightened my hair to a golden blonde, everything about my appearance brightened up significantly. Now, I can't even look at old pictures of myself without getting angry at how many years I wasted looking like the life was sucked out of me. And instead of trying to blend my naturally dark hair with a light wig by dyeing it into oblivion and frying the crap out of it in a leave-out, I got really good at making a closure look authentic. Yes, I wear braids, perm, and color my natural hair so I can wear it out every once in a while, but my default is my 24-inch, raw, blonde body wave wig, and I absolutely love it.

Investing in Lip Blushing.

What Are The Best Investments Youve Made With Your Appearance?

Being lighter-complected, the excess pigmentation around my lipline threw my whole face out of balance and made my lips look significantly smaller. So I spent a few days researching different artists, booked a consultation, and within a week got them tattooed to a blush pink that I customized to my complexion. Now, let me just say, it was probably the most painful cosmetic procedure I’ve ever had, my lips took weeks to heal, and it wasn’t cheap. But, hey, beauty is pain, right? Worth every penny and every tear (and my boyfriend yelling in horror "You look like one of those blow-up sex dolls!!" when he saw how swollen and red my lips were right after the procedure).

Investing in a Strength Training and Pilates Routine.

What Are The Best Investments Youve Made With Your Appearance?

Unfortunately, I'm not naturally stacked, nor does my body hold onto muscle easily. So, if I don't work out consistently (which I didn't for years), I'll end up looking skinny-fat (which I did, again, for years). Anyway, deciding to cut the crap and start incorporating serious strength training into my daily routine has completely changed my physique for the better, and I never see myself going back. I usually do Pilates (Reformer, not mat) three times per week and strength training after cardio another three days a week. I've also got a set of 5-pound dumbbells in my bedroom that I often lift for a few minutes at a time when I'm bored and need to get off my phone. As a result, I look leaner than ever, I'm more confident than ever, and I've developed a real passion for lifting. I wake up excited to get to my workout (partially due to the really hot trainer I pretend to avoid eye contact with in the weight room), and that in itself is a miracle.

Investing in Regular Pedicures and Manicures.

What Are The Best Investments Youve Made With Your Appearance?

Fun fact: I hate getting my nails done. So much so that I used to avoid it like the plague and convince myself that chipped nail polish I applied every three weeks was enough to look presentable. However, I quickly learned (after living in Manhattan for like 5 minutes) that there's no easier or better way to look put together and polished than having a really gorgeous, clean set of nails. So, I started hauling my ass to the salon every two weeks to keep my nails impeccable. My jewelry looks so much better on my hands, my fingers look longer and thinner, and I get complimented constantly on whatever my set of the month is. I still hate getting my nails done, but it's simply a non-negotiable for me at this point.

Investing in a Great Skincare and Makeup Routine.

What Are The Best Investments Youve Made With Your Appearance?

I've always been into my skin, so becoming an expert on all things perfect complexion was easy and deeply satisfying. Like most Black women, I'm extremely prone to hyperpigmentation, so getting regular facials, using tretinoin, reapplying sunscreen every couple of hours, and doing everything possible to avoid getting a pimple is very important to me. Why? Because perfect skin makes the perfect base for perfect makeup. This brings me to the reality that investing in the right products, techniques, and skills when it comes to makeup has been a game-changer for me. When I was in college, I dropped $500 on a makeup class with a celebrity makeup artist, and it was the best money I've ever spent. My makeup looks impeccable 24/7, and I know exactly how to enhance every single feature I have. I don't wear makeup every day, but when I do, I can relax knowing it looks great.

Lovingly, Elle
