Interesting Facts and Ironies Relating to Springfield, Illinois and Richmond, Virginia
As most of you know, I was born and raised in Springfield, Illinois and Amanda was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. On May 5, 2012 Amanda moved from Richmond to Springfield where we were married and lived for little over two years. On August 5, 2014 Amanda and I moved to Richmond. Herein, are some very contrasting facts and ironies relating to Springfield, Illinois and Richmond, Virginia.
• Springfield is the capitol of Illinois and Richmond is the capitol of Virginia.
• Illinois is considered a northern state and Virginia is considered a southern state.
• Illinoisans predominately speak w a “newscaster” accent and a less dominate mild hoosher accent while Virginians predominately speak w a “newscaster” accent and a less dominate mild southern accent.
• Springfield was the capitol of the Union and Richmond was the capitol of the confederacy during the civil war.
• Ulysses S. Grant, the most prominent general in the union, lived the better part of his life in Springfield and Robert E. Lee, the most prominent general in the confederacy, lived the better part of his life in Richmond.
• Robert E Lee surrendered the south to Ulysses S Grant.
• Both Grant and Lee demonstrated a mutual respect for each other and their armies.
• Illinoisans, who won the civil war, take little pride in the civil war and generally prefer not to remember it, whereas, Virginians, who lost the civil war generally take great pride in the civil war and prefer to preserve its memory.
