This line killed me. And cemented my adoration for this series.
And made me stare out the window wistfully with a mug[1] of herbal tea thinking about two inches.
[1]An Oh Deer! Diner mug, ladies.
“Have a lot of experience with trans women, do you?”
“Enough to know that if you give them an inch they’ll steal ten years from themselves.”
Sisters of Dorley, chapter 15.
It took a long time to stop fighting this urge in the rare times it happened as an adult. Now when that feeling comes along, I don't care how silly it may seem[1] I ride the lightning wherever it leads.
[1]Looking at you Sisters of Dorley.
Look SO many things are better as an adult, but I do so very genuinely truly miss the childhood experience of going completely insane over something at the drop of a hat. As an adult you need the right cocktail of drugs weather humidity feng-shui and job prospects to feel like a piece of media can rip you into orbit. As a 14-year-old all it took was the worst Naruto reruns in the world playing at 10pm in your childhood basement. Unmatched experience. Irreplicable. Truly a once in a lifetime gift as an apology for the experience of being 14.
The Sisters of Dorley in particular has the amazing ability to re-crack some folks' eggs. Oh you didn't think you had any egg left to crack? You thought you were doing just fine as a self-actualized happy, healthy, trans woman? Oh, Greaves has such sights to show you.
Seriously, I'd been out and living my life for well over a decade when I stumbled into Dorley - the book, not the fictional facility - every little thing I'd denied myself, or buried because it was too hard, or too disruptive, or not worth the effort became a thing worth fighting for again. Magic.
(All of her others are fantastic, too. Kimmy is a personal favourite. Brilliant transhumanist horror.)
just realised I've never read a novel with a transfem protagonist and I need to remedy that ASAP.
so: please drop your transfem-centric novel recommendations (bonus points if fantasy)
