Shameless Spoilers - Tumblr Posts

I recently redeveloped a Shameless US obsession after having overcome it 4 years ago and I just have to rant about the way Mickey was written off in the 6th season. In season 5, when gallavich breaks up, our hearts are broken in a million tiny little pieces. BUT we understand the necessity of the break up and, as is the case for most of the time up until season 5, the writing is good enough that we can sympathise with both Mickey and Ian. The start of season 6 is UNFORGIVABLE. They did Mickey downright atrocious. They actually made Ian treat him like a toxic ex??? When Ian visited him in prison he had the audacity to tell him that Svetlana paid him to come???? What the actual fuck. AND it doesn't stop there. Mickey shows him a literal TATTOO OF HIS NAME ACROSS HIS CHEST AND IAN DOES NOT GIVE EVEN A FRACTION OF A FUCK???? And the cherry on top in this sadistic cake was that Mickey had to ask him MULTIPLE TIMES if he would wait for him to get out AND IAN DIDN'T EVEN HAVE THE COMMON DECENCY TO LIE WITHOUT BEING ASKED TO LIE FIRST????????? That scene pissed me off more than the entirety of season 5 did, because they left Mickey without a single shred of self respect. He was one of the most well developed characters. His progress was unreal. He went from "Kiss me an I'll rip your fucking tongue out" to:

1. Coming out for Ian just because he was afraid to lose him again

2. Taking care of him when his depression hit (even if in the long term the psych ward was the better option)

3. Supporting Ian in every single one of his phases. When he was manic, he made plans with him and calmed him down. When he was depressed, he laid with him and hid the knives. When he STOLE HIS BABY, HE FORGAVE HIM IMMEDIATELY AND DID EVERYTHING HE COULD SO HE COULD GET PROPER HELP.

4. He did not give up on him even when he was tempted to do so.

5. He assumed the role of Ian's personal nurse when the idiot refused to take his medication like a toddler because he only wanted what was best for him.

6. He eas the first one to say "I love you', 2 time, both unreciprocated.

And Ian was willing to look besides all the aforementioned stuff and just plain up treat him like he meant nothing to him, as if he didn't mean the world to him a couple seasons ago. The breakup was extremely painful, especially because Ian was heavily influenced by Monica and pretty much forgot everything Mickey did for him. But the start of season 6. Dude. That's a new low. This is limbo dancing with satan kind of low. This is the writers don't respect the audience kind of low. Come on.

I was rewatching Gallavich scenes, as one does at 3 am, and I just noticed a detail so wholesome that it would be a crime not to share it. In season 4 episode 7, aka the episode where Mandy gets Mickey to go look for Ian, there is this scene in which Kev wants a gun and he goes to the Milkoviches to get it. There he asks Mickey if he is wearing cologne and Mickey says that it's just Kenyatta's perfumed soap.

BULLSHIT.

Mickey obviously didn't admit it but he was wearing cologne because he intended to see Ian for the first in a while and he wanted to smell good. That's the obvious wholesome detail about this scene. But wait. There's something more that I just noticed.

I Was Rewatching Gallavich Scenes, As One Does At 3 Am, And I Just Noticed A Detail So Wholesome That

MICKEY WAS TRYING TO PICK A NICE OUTFIT TO GO MEET IAN AND HE HAD LAID OUT ALL OF HIS GOOD SHIRTS KSHDKSKSHDHS. THE FAN SERVICE GOES FUCKING CRAZY WITH THIS ONE.

NOT ONLY DID MICKEY MILKOVICH WEAR FUCKING COLOGNE, HE ALSO CHOSE TO LOOK HIS FUCKING BEST TO SEE IAN. I CAN'T THIS IS TOO FUCKING MUCH.

I have beef with the Shameless writers once again. In the whole Fiona-Lip debate of the fandom, I personally tend to support Lip a bit more, even though I think that comparing the two is completely pointless as they are fundamentally different characters. But, I think that Lip's attitude towards Fiona's alcoholism is an avoidable and incredibly idiotic writing error. I'll elaborate. The writers have spent seasons 7-9 building Lip as a character that has struggled with alcoholism, that has relapsed after getting sober, that became a sponsor, that cares, even when he doesn't "have" to, about other people and their difficulties, that is always there when you need him, that supports you, even when you don't want him to out of pure pettiness, and so on. So when his own sister, who has raised him at a great personal cost (granted not perfectly but what do you expect from someone that was practically forced into motherhood at the age of 9?), fights her own battle with alcoholism after her whole world comes crumbling down from every possible angle, you'd logically expect Lip to at the very least be there for her. But the writers decided to go a different way. For no reason at all, they made Lip be supportive of literally everyone else that drank, except Fiona. It doesn't make sense and it pisses me off because it's like they are throwing away years of character development down the drain in a way that essentially insults the audience's ability to grasp simple fucking concepts. It was a scenariographical mistake and that is a hill I'm willing to die on.

I don't think people put much thought into the "You're not dumbing me, I'm dumping you" scene in prison. Those words had so much emotions behind them. Mickey, the guy that went against everything he was raised to believe and be in order to be with Ian, the guy that came out in front of his entire family to not lose Ian again, the guy who was there for Ian taking care of him and playing nurse when his BPD hit, got broken up with in the most heartbreaking way possible in the end of season 5. He sacrificed so much for Ian and Ian broke up with him essentially on the basis of "I'm not broken and you're trying to fix me so buh-bye". He got dumped after being the most vulnerable he had been in ages and that must have been excruciating for him. His ego must have been at an all time low. Season 7 he's reunited with Ian only to be left again, this time at border. That breakup was especially rough because Ian had made him believe that he would come with him to Mexico up until the last possible moment. Mickey must have imagined their new lives together in Mexico and built a future in his mind, only for that to, once again, be ripped out of him violently. Once again, he must have been devastated, being so open and emotional and unlike his old self and getting brutally rejected. So when they're at the prison and Ian tries to break up with him a THIRD time, he can't handle that. He's got to have some self respect and dignity left. He can't be the dumbed for the third time, he just can't. Every single time he allowed himself to be vulnerable and emotional and honest about his feelings in this relationship Ian turned him down in the most heart wrenching ways possible and a third time is just too much. So yeah. "You're not dumbing me, I'm dumping you". And my point is proven by Ian's reaction. When Mickey tells him that he will stab Chester and get thrown into solitary instead of him, Ian tries to race him for it. Why would he do that? I mean, theoretically, all he wanted was some time apart. He would have gotten his time apart plus he wouldn't have to be tortured in solitary. This was a win-win situation for Ian. But he couldn't let that happen. You know why? Cause he fucking wanted to be the "winner" of the breakup, that's why. He wanted to have the moral high ground. He wanted to be the one to break up with Mickey because if Mickey broke up with him, it would have been a massive hit to his ego, because he would have felt exactly how he made Mickey feel the last 2 times. And he didn't want that.

Look at him.

LOOK at him.

Look At Him.

LOOK AT HOW JEALOUS THE LITTLE ANKLE BITER IS. HE HAS GONE FERAL WITH PURE ENVY.

He can't stand the thought of Ian being with another dude, much less an old, rich one. So he just goes and jealously stares at them kdhfhskdhgdhs. And you know he was looking for an excuse to punch Ned. Had Ned not called Mickey Ian's boyfriend, he still would have gotten a nasty beatdown, just for some other completely bullshit excuse. I think about this a lot. It's like Svetlana said in the later seasons. "I don't say things, I do things.". And that very accurately describes s3 Mickey. He loves Ian but he can't tell him that. Because he hasn't accepted himself, because he's embarrassed, because of Terry and all that. But he can give a beatdown to guys Ian dates. He can kiss him secretly when they are robbing Ned's ex-wife. He can start making out with him right before his wedding as a last hurrah to save their relationship. He just can't talk it out.

okay but why do I feel so sad about frank right now

The fact there are three things in the entire world frank is supposed to know (his name, address, and that he has dementia) and we find that out RIGHT when everyone talks about selling the house. It’s the one thing Frank has constant in his life: his house and his family being there. Not that he deserves anything but. Not only is his neighborhood becoming indistinguishable from what he knows in it’s own right, but the one constant he’s always had is getting taken from him right when he starts loosing his memory.

The scene where Mickey put the gun on Terry. The fact that Terry saw a FRACTION of the terror he inflicted on Mickey his entire childhood and turned into a blubbering mess while Mickey was forced to save face when it happened to him. The fact that Mickey could have at least bruised him a little with the gun but he didn't. Mickey just made him feel fear that for  a moment. Maybe remembered what that felt like. The fact that it broke him a little to know that his abuser couldn't take even a small hit of his own medicine; that he wasn't even better than Mickey at not being afraid.
