so back then, i watched hsmtmts right? but only the first and second one bcuz i couldnt bother watching the 3rd and 4th season lmao. BUT the one time i dont watch those, i found out that nini isnt the main character anymore, some casts left the show, AND I FIND OUT RICKY AND GINA ARE NOW DATING????????????? EXCUSE????????

they really brought back the romantic tension they once had in season 1 lmao (but wasnt that literally just a stunt gina pulled to piss nini off?? idk i dont remember)

Chapter One
It comes as a surprise when Ricky Bowen knocks on her bedroom window. Gina is laying in bed, listening to music. She almost falls off the bed when she sees him standing there, waiting for her to open it. He’s crazy if he actually thinks she’s going to let him inside. It’s late and she’s tired. She turns to look at him, his eyebrows are raised and something tells her he’s not going to leave. What was he even doing there anyway? She rolls her eyes, tosses the covers and opens the window.

Ricky and Gina should be endgame. Like him and nini are so predictable and basic. Ricky and Gina have so much chemistry. Gina understands Ricky and she supports him unlike nini. Ricky and Gina are both “outsiders” and they both parallel Troy and Gabriella. I love how we see their relationship grow from strangers to friends to possible crushes . Unlike with him and nini we only know their past which we the viewers haven’t seen. Ricky seemed so much more happier when he was with Gina . He always had a smile when she’s around. And they had so many cute moments. There’s just so much potential there and Disney needs a interracial couple we haven’t had one in a while or probably at all can’t really remember.
Omg what if the way Ricky finally see his feelings for Gina is when Ej and Gina are doing something cute around the camp fire and Ricky side eyeing them or giving them a look kinda being jealous. And he’s like “what’s this feeling?” “Had it been Gina all this time?” And him finally realizing what she was actually saying in the flash back scene w/ her having feelings. Lol and Big Red’s like “yes yes it has, it took you long enough”idk I’m just high typing all this 😂.
100% this. This take has rubbed me the wrong way in every fandom I've encountered it in, but I've never been able to put into words why as well as OP has.
I would also add, that "i ship ricky with therapy" implies that rina shippers don't want to see Ricky grow. That him getting in a romantic relationship with Gina is the only thing we care about for the character. Which is ridiculous, cause one of the big reasons most of us ship rina, is because we already care about the characters as individuals and how their interactions allow them to open up to each other and grow as people.
Of course I want to see Ricky get to a place, where he's struggling less and is working through his issues in therapy. Because the show is a drama, not a tragedy and I'm tuning in to see these characters grow and change and ultimately succeed! But I don't have to "ship someone with therapy" to want that.
"Shipping someone with therapy" feels like a reductive way of viewing therapy, too. I get that it's a joke, but bringing mental health into ship wars in such a trivializing way feels a bit gross. I realize that it's a joke and a lot of people that use that phrase are perfectly happy to have longer, more nuanced discussions. (A lot of them are also not.) But that phrase automatically puts shippers in a defensive position, where they feel the need to explain that they do care about mental health, etc. That's just not a great starting place for interesting and civil conversation.
Ricky getting the help he needs and also being in a loving relationship can absolutely coexist and like OP said, implying that that's not the case is a pretty scary take. And using therapy as a gotcha to imply that (in this case rina) shippers don't care about mental health instantly trivialises a topic that requires more nuance than most bad faith ship wars are prepared to handle.
every time a portwell brings therapy when talking about ricky as an excuse as to why they don’t ship rina it makes my blood boil. “i ship ricky with therapy” what exactly is that supposed to mean? because i know for damn sure you are not implying that people struggling mentally are not worthy of love and relationships. right? because every time one of yall spout some stupid nonsense such as “i don’t ship ricky with gina. i ship him with therapy” is not the take you think it is.
Rina Week – Day One: Coffee Shop AU
Gina's been out of High School for almost a year and for someone who travelled so much growing up, she would have thought she'd be less surprised when friendships start to fade.
But it really is Ricky walking through that door, even though last she heard he was studying two states away.
Trying to find their place in the world is no easy task, but they made a good team once. Maybe they can again.

Five times Gina didn't text people and one time she did.
Home is where the heart is. The rallying cry of all vagabonds.
In her fantasy, once she was old enough to own her own house, she would balance the broken-off sign on the porch.
If it’s final resting place could be inviting, not guarded, maybe Gina could be, too.

Rina Week - Day Four: College AU
"You get it though, right? How Ms. Jenn made the musicals a safe space. I mean, you found your place here, too, cause of the friend group. Enough to stay.”
The atmosphere has shifted, but this is the type of territory they’ve always tread when they’re on their own. Safe spaces and all that.
“You’re kind of a big reason I stayed, Ricky.” He hears his own voice from two years ago in the echo.
Different year, different car, different driveway. Same two people.
He never did forget Homecoming.

(Set throughout 2022, Ricky's first year in college.)
It's so nice to see Ricky and Gina smiling at each other again! It's been so long since they've just had fun spending time together without being weighed down by unspoken things. Of course, we can still expect a bunch of complicated feelings and rina's trademark deeper understanding, which naturally means they'll have some heavier conversations. But for now it feels so good to see them start to be friends again!

I also wanna add - pretty sure, the thing that EJ was worried about coming between them, was that he's suddenly directing the musical which will make him super busy. Gina assumes he's worried about a person coming between them, which he wasn't even thinking about in that moment.
And then in comes Ricky, right on cue.
Can't wait to see what this season holds.

I really think you're on to something here with your interpretations of their mindsets! The fact that EJ was worried about being too busy as director to show up properly and Gina's first thought is that he's worried about a person... was very telling.
now that i’ve had a minute to think about it i have some thoughts about the ending scene.
firstly, ej’s entire speech of ‘i’m the guy who shows up, nothing is gonna ruin our summer/come between us’ was interesting. why is he already trying to reassure her of his competence? aren’t they supposed to be in the honeymoon phase, where all is perfect? the idea of just directing a show immediately has him feeling protective or over his relationship.
secondly, gina’s response to ej saying ‘nothing’s gonna get in our way’ being ‘who said anybody would?’ actually made me smile. like that was so clever. the idea of a third person being involved and getting in the way is gina’s first instinct when thinking of her relationship being disrupted. meaning she still has lingering thoughts and feelings about said person and she, almost defensively, jumped to say ‘why would someone get between us?’ even though that wasn’t what ej was saying.
even without ricky literally getting between them seconds later this dialogue is so significant. pw may be in their glory days but there’s always this underlying insecurity and doubt about their future. because gina knows somewhere deep down that she never got closure and never moved on. and i think ej also knows somewhere deep down that he doesn’t know how to balance his adult life and responsibilities with his relationship.
EJ: Nothing is gonna ruin our perfect summer together. Nothing’s gonna get in our way.
Gina: Who said anybody would?

I think Ricky's arrival at camp has a layer to it that I haven't really seen discussed yet, that makes the Rina forshadowing almost more deliberate?
Maybe it's the fact that I've been hung up on the Rina slowburn, but I was expecting the payoff to the 'Lily has the harness'-plotline to take a little while. At the earliest, as a cliffhanger for the end of E01. But no - Ricky and Lily lasted from the last (two?) eps of S2 to only halfway though the first of S3.
If they were gonna rush the Ricky and Lily plotline this much, why include it at all? Because they needed Ricky to be almost a day late to camp. Late enough to arrive after EJ has been appointed director, so that Ricky could be there for the "Who said anybody would?" moment.
We all knew Ricky/Lily was going to be a plot device, but it turned out to be the direct set up for the heaviest rina forshadowing we've ever had and I am so here for it.
Oh my god, the text transition with the smile works so, so well. This is gorgeous.
