I’m glad to see this, but I wish people would focus on the other aspects of PWS that don’t get as much attention because while the food seeking and hunger are the most well known symptom of the disease, there are others that affect individuals with PWS just as much.
People with PWS often also have:
Mild to moderate intellectual disabilities
Mood Disorders
difficulty with fine motor skills
difficulty with change and transitions
anxiety disorders
insufficient production of growth hormones, estrogen and testosterone
delayed or partial puberty
in women, inability to have children
skin picking and self injurious behaviors
An increase in the likelihood of mental illness
Increased risk for PICA or compulsion to eat inedible objects.
Lets not forget that the average age of lifespan for someone with PWS is only about 50 years. Around 40, they begin to age more rapidly, often resulting in dementia-like symptoms. If you’ve ever sat with a kid who has just realized that they will never live to be old, or have children of their own you begin to understand just how truly insidious and devastating this disease really is.
The food drive is a huge part of the condition, and the danger of weight related complications does drive up the risk of diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea and respiratory problems. There is also a very real risk of stomach rupture from binge eating.
But it is so much more than just that.

#obligatoryphoto that it may be #cold, but the #snow won’t #shovel itself! I love how the #forecast on my #PWS shows #thundersnow 😂🥶 #mtwx https://www.instagram.com/p/CLSd9FgMP2S/?igshid=1o0vuto1k8fkb
