Poem: About Balloons
He asked me to write him a poem about balloons.
I said, “What about them?
Their defiance of gravity?
Their vibrant colors against the dullness of the sky?”
His reply:
“If you could, write about me as a balloon.
I know that it’s impossible,
But I dream that I can fly.”
I gazed into his eyes,
Which, in turn, met mine.
I said, “You believe that you can’t
Because you haven’t dared to try.”
He asked me to write him a poem about balloons.
I said, “Why about them, when I can write about you?
You, whose laugh conjures cotton candy among clouds,
Your heart the gleaming sun that brightens up my life.”

Poem: Explorers
I want to watch the world with you.
Let’s walk somewhere, or everywhere,
And take in the sky,
Sunrise to sunset
With a glint in your eye.
Come exploring with me.
Let’s go on a hunt
For the tallest tree;
I’m afraid of falling
But I’ll climb it
If you’ll be up there with me.
We can find a field
For picnicking,
Stargazing,
Dream-chasing.
Let’s ride our bikes to the ocean
To breathe in some salt and sunshine
Before we have to turn back.
Let’s pretend that we’ve known each other
For as long as the world has been here
And make every step together
A new adventure.

Poem: Catching Up
Can we talk a bit tonight? I’d love to
Hear what’s on your mind. Maybe I
Merely miss the mumbling of your
Soft voice as it drifts through the
Speakers in my often-silent room,
Or perhaps I prefer laughing with you
At every other turn of phrase over
Watching the ceiling fan turn. With
Each whirl that I witness, I wish that
You were with me some more. My
Heart pulls me to you like the tides
Are drawn by the moon, and I hope
To hear from you sometime soon.

Poem: Dusk
Dusk was infinitely more appealing to
Me when I saw the darkness in your eyes
And knew that we were due for some
Sort of adventure, or maybe a few.
I wondered where we would wind up
If we wandered toward the shadow
Of the sun along the dimly lit horizon,
Where we had watched it fall away
And leave us longing for more time
In the day. If the sun would not take
Another moment to lighten up
Your gaze, I would chase it until
You laughed at the futility of making
Haste in such a pointless race. Dusk was
Infinitely more appealing to me when I
Saw the moon rise to reflect light back
From your eyes and knew that there was
No disguise in your sweet, honest smile.

Poem: Swaying to the Sound of You
Could I miss you any more
Than I did while swaying
To the sound of your old
Favorite song as it sweetly
Sang to me in the tune of
My soft memories of you?
