RICHELIEU, part 5 

Expressions of Pierre Vernier as Richelieu in the 1977 series. He went hysterical a bunch of times, his favorite expressions were “Tout est perdu!” or “Je suis perdu!”

Louis XIII is agitated about something; Richelieu flirts with the Queen Mother to further his ambitions; a marshal tells Richelieu that he is officially a cardinal; Louis intends to sleep with his wife for a change but just cannot bring himself to go through with it and returns to his room.

Scenes from Episode 4. The Queen Mother’s vicious attack on Richelieu; Louis XIII momentarily contemplating whether he should dump Richelieu; Richelieu humiliated; the King tells his mother to shut up already; Louis rebuffs Richelieu, terrifying him; the King is really pissed off and decides not to dump Richelieu at all; he summons Richelieu to Versailles–Richelieu thinks it’s a trap.

Scenes from Episode 5, The Nation in Danger. At my level of French, I couldn’t understand most of this episode. Chic dresser Cardinal Enfant (brother of Anne of Austria) wants to go to war with France. Richelieu has arguments with Louis and Père Joseph. The King decides to go directly to the people. Père Joseph called Richelieu a coward after Richelieu had a hissy fit and threw that letter. When Père Joseph was dying, Richelieu told him that Brisach is taken so he could have peace of mind. It actually wasn’t taken, but right after Père Joseph died, Richelieu got the announcement that it was!
