If the straw hats are found family then Perona Mihawk and zoro are a dysfunctional birth family.

You might not like each other but there is something keeping you all inexplicably linked together and to this place and in your own ways you care about each other but they always come out in angry shouts and too harsh words.

You were always meant to leave this place. That doesn’t mean, it wasn’t still home.

While I think Shanks just oozes dad energy. Like never before has a childless man given more daddergy.

But I think Mihawk also radiates a specific kind of dad energy too. And that is the borderline manic glee of a father in constant warfare with his children over truly the most petty inconsequential shit, that is very proud of his winning strike

Although I love tiny malnourished Mihawk challenges Rayleigh to a fight, loses and then becomes unceremoniously adopted and hold him very dear to my heart.

I do generally think that Unlike Zoro who challenges gods to back alley fights at every opportunity, Mihawk has always been very good at knowing when he’s horribly outclassed and having the patience to wait and grow stronger before challenging the world’s greatest swordsmen. There’s a reason his skin (as far as we know) is unblemished and Zoro is practically held together by scars and alcohol.

So I do think this will make it all the more devastating for him if when he loses, Zoro gives him three clean slashes down his chest to match Shanks’ jagged ones, and then doesn’t kill him. Mihawk’s never lost before at least not in any meaningful definition of the word. He’s never had lasting scars before and now he has three giant ones running across his chest, the thing he loves to show off, and he has feelings about it.

Do I even need to explain all the ways in which this is Perona and Zoro or does it just eat you alive the way it does me.

Like they are stranded together on a deserted island in the ruins of a kingdom that destroyed itself. The only other person is a dangerous uncaring man, who kind of feels like a father, but could so easily kill the both of us if he wanted and there'd be nothing I could do to protect you.

It's us versus him but he takes care of us and doesn't care that we argue all the time. We trade insults like breathing and you have no reason to still be here but you bandage my injuries everyday all the same and no matter how much you complain you still carry around a first aid kit .

The old man's a lunatic but I think he's lonely, we do most things together, all of us, even though we don't have too. I do your share of the chores when you beg and pretend to hate it, you make me a snack when I can’t move and complain about it.

We curse each other out, we sit down for dinner, I'm leaving soon. We have separate lives that weren't meant to be intertwined forever but some part of my string will forever be tangled up in yours.

The day before I leave you bake a cake I don't like but eat anyway.

I'm glad we had this.

I think there's a lot of evidence in canon to suggest that Mihawk doesn't want to be lonely. But he doesn't know how to be around other people without expecting too much of them and always ultimately ending up disappointed when they fall short.

Sometimes when he looks at Shanks, all he can see is failed potential and broken promises he made with no one but himself.

Even now he tries not to linger longer than he has too;

Shanks' future no longer has any room for him and so Mihawk remains stagnant stuck 10 years in the past, alone. He doesn't know how to be anything else.

That is until a couple of pesky cotton candy haired children barge into his castle and into his life and drag him head first into the future too

While I think Garp would be soley responsible for Mihawk’s hair falling out in clumps if they spent any amount of time together

I do think garp and Zoro would get on splendidly. As they are after all the same flavor of person.

any attempt to put all three of them in the same room will give Mihawk ulcers.

Mihawk would comment on their stupidity

Garp would respond “ain’t got to be smart to be a marine” and zoro would raise his glass in salute “ here, here”

And Mihawk’s blood pressure would reach levels previously inaccessible by man.

I don’t know why, maybe because I’ve been on a Garp kick lately.

But I do really think that Garp kind of became like a surrogate Uncle to the Roger boys and by extension Mihawk. Like I can just imagine Roger telling them that if they were ever separated from the crew or if something ever happened to him or Ray and they needed help they should go to Garp (I mean he entrusted his own baby to him it makes sense he’d also entrust his boys)

(for whatever reason Mihawk got this talk too despite him already traveling by himself and not being officially part of Rogers crew. But since Ray adopted him he’s Roger’s brat as well)

All this to say that Garp takes his uncle duties very seriously and what is an uncle if not an inconvenience and an embarrassment?

So Ofcourse he pulls up to Kuriagina during the timeskip (Hawain shirt and all) to visit his new grand babies (read Perona and Zoro) that he’s heard so much about. (read shanks immediately gossiped with him abou mt after stumbling upon them last time he came to visit Mihawk)

And because Garp is essentially the one piece equivalent of Florida man, this goes well for absolutely nobody

Except Zoro who is nothing if not a troll. And game must recognize game.

The monkeys love him tho, he communicates with them on a wavelength nobody can quite understand least of all Garp.

I think it’d be funny if at some point Mihawk and Perona actually tried making their own wine and it was so terrible and Mihawk just won’t talk about it

Next time Shanks, as they are drinking, jokingly brings up the idea that Mihawk should probably make his own wine since he’s gone full farmer core and Mihawk, almost combusting in shame, attempts to drown him with alcohol to avoide the question

Do I even have to say it or can you see the vision?

This is just very Mihawk. I mean he lives by the blade ever meaningful relationship he has (except perona) is defined by it and he one day hopes to die by it.

You get the sense that he is more sword than person that Yoru is probably his soul made physical form.

And

But yeah this is very Perona and Zoro. I can imagine Perona just telling Zoro all her fears like her deepest fears that she’ll never really belong anywhere and Zoro dumbass that he is will just be like “well you’re here now aren’t you” and down a bottle of absinthe. Like he just has the bluntest form of reassurance it’s honestly so nice. And if Zoro (maybe after he loses his eyes or just after a really bad day) feels like what if l he won’t even beat Hawkeyes what will that make of him then and perona would laugh in his face and tell him he’s still young and the old man’s just gonna keep getting older so who knows maybe sim for his bad hype. And then she’ll paint his nails.

Like they just feel like they would never actually, out loud in the exact words, reaffirm each others dreams or dismiss their fears but Zoro will let Perona paint his nails and do her share of the chores and Perona will make stitch up his cuts and make him a snack and they’ll know.

It’s interesting that despite Kuma probably knowing of Mihawk’s reputation for ruthlessness and being a warlord for atleast 3 years he’s actively seen his apathy. But he must have seen something else to send two kids he was actively trying to help to his island (that is considering his powers don’t have a mind of their own and he has to actively consider where exactly he’s sending people and not just a want or vibe)

I don’t know; he sent the strawhats exactly where they needed to go and he sent Perona and Zoro to kuraigina home of the world’s strongest swordsman and he had to know, atleast on some level trust, that Mihawk wouldn’t hurt them. And I wonder why.

Maybe he’s seen the extent of Mihawk’s various whims to combat boredom and knew the man couldn’t resist anything this interesting.

I think Mihawk should break his arm, have to wear it in a sling the whole shebang, it's just completely useless for a little while, meaning( because I'm pretty sure Yoru is a two hand sword) he can't use Yoru at full potential.

I think it'd give him a lot to think about, once he made it past all the anger that is.

preferably his right arm because while I'd bet he's ambidextrous to some insane self taught degree I'm pretty sure he's right hand dominant

Also I don't now how he'd break it but preferably something involving doing something for/protecting he kids. (could be silly could be serious) maybe they made him climb a coconut tree who knows, not me 🤷🏿‍♀️

But I think he'd come out of the whole ordeal wih a little more respect for Shanks and just how hard it is to live without your dominant hand, A realization that he kind of made the whole shanks lost an arm thing about him and while Shanks' loves Mihawk's vanity that was a little too childish even for him.

And finally i think he's be angry cause how could Shanks give this up? He can't use Yoru with the extreme ease he usually can and even just this is threatening to swallow him whole, how could Shanks' so recklessly, willingly, throw away his forever?

But he looks over at where a pair of cotton candy haired idiots are arguing over nothing; whole, relatively healthy and maybe not very happy but alive and he thinks about how he had a little something to do with that.

And Maybe he's starting to get it.

I am very down with the idea that whenever Shanks comes to Visit him on Kuriagina Mihawk uses him like hired muscle

He works him like a dog, Shanks hasn’t even set two feet on the island and Mihawk has handed him a list of all the furniture that needs moving, the light bulbs (he has like 30 chandeliers) that need changing, the rooms that need repainting. Living in the ruins of a castle of a dead kingdom takes work. Could Mihawk do it? No he has a garden to take care off.🙄

Just the idea that Mihawk started a renovation project on his castle while Zoro was there as part of his “training” and Shanks shows up and really Shanks you’re just gonna stand there while the kid does all that heavy lifting Mihawk says as he sips his glass of wine.

Shanks of course is happy to do it. Benn, who he recruits cause there’s just somethings a one armed man shouldn’t do on his own, is of course disgruntled that he has once again been dragged into their weird foreplay.

Perona of course goes “I’m just a girl” 🥺. And of course when Mihawk is unmoved by this She huff and sets to tricking Zoro to do her share of the tasks as well.

She then proceeds to become the most heinous, unethical, inhumane work site manager to ever exist. All while wearing a glittery construction vest and bedazzled hard hat

Mihawk in his own weird gothic way is a Disney princess except instead of cutesy woodland animals he attracts eerily human abandoned forest creatures that can do his bidding and red haired menaces and cotton candy haired children that test his patience

Watching Dressrosa and seeing Zoro watch Luffy's colosseum battle on the screen I was suddenly hit by the fact that in a Modern AU he'd probably be the most obnoxious kind of soccer fan.

You know the one that probably picks a new favorite team every match and is only a soccer fan when they are actively watching soccer. I can honestly just imagine him screaming at the screen and being all dramatic at the team talking about honor and shit. No actual practical knowledge of soccer though.

I just think he and Mihawk would just be the kind of people that like sport in a Modern AU they are athletes themselves but they also just like competition and adrenaline and so sports. Except Mihawk atleast attempts to possess a basic knowledge of the rules and plays of sports he watches while Zoro will watch a sport he's never heard of in his life, chooses a random dude that's "got guts" and root for them so wholeheartedly you'd think he's supported them all his life.

All this to say that goth family watches the World Cup as part of "family bonding time" and

-Mihawk is rooting for 3 separate countries, the 2 that his data says are statically most probably going to win and his home country cause he has some "patriotic pride". He watches intensely but never actually reacts to anything.

-Zoro is rooting for whichever team is playing against whatever team Mihawk is repping at the moment. He has no stakes in this longterm whatsoever exceot that he gets his fill of trolling Mihawk, sports adrenaline and on the rare occasion his team wins he gets to be a smug asshole to the man who raised him 😌. He screams at the T.V so much you'd think he had money on the line.

-Perona liked the idea of styling cute matching jerseys so much so that she forgot how much she hates watching sport. She is very bored and unhappy and hopes that somehow both of them lose. She judges the outfits (the jerseys) of different countries and their coaches on a scale that only she really understands but all must suffer through.

-Shanks is there because this is the only time Mihawk will hold his hand even though he is squeezing so hard his bones might be ground to dust. (the only indicator that Mihaw is affected at all by what is happening). He's bar hopper he's used to seeing random sports he doesn't understand played on green fields running in the background of his mild buzz to drunken fool binge. He's just glad to be included.

No but actually I've been really thinking about it and Mihawk just doesn't do shit by halves does he? he's so obsessive.

He doesn't just like red wine it's literally his favorite food

He doesn't just like swords, his is practically his soul made physical. Yoru is so coded in his dna that they literally had to make a replica for his clone.

he isn't just into swordsmanship he literally became the world's best and strongest swordsman

He doesn't just like to duel he's overdone it so much that no one can hold his interest anymore

He didn't just kill marines he was the literal marine hunter.

He doesn't just wait for Zoro at the top he collects every single bounty poster obsessively tracking his rise

He doesn't just let the kids live with him he adopts them, and teaches them how to be stronger. Doesn't let Perona go until he knowns that he can no longer properly guarantee her safety.

He can't just have a garden he has to go full on farmer strawhat and all.

He doesn't just like Shanks he wants to consume him whole he let's the memory of their duel haunt him and even 12 years later he can't fully forgive them. This might be the single most important relationship in his life.

There isn't a moderate bone in his body. He's either making decisions just because or letting them consume him whole.

I bet it's all the Catholicism.

I got very inspired and thought I'd share some of the songs that really started to feel very Mishanks to me.

Change “I don’t care that you’re a stoner” to serial killer and this is definetly Shanks about Mihawk vibes .

I don’t know very Mihawk about the whole situation and their falling out. He’ll never say it out loud tho.

Yes Hozier because again nobody does Longing and reminisce quiet as well. Mishanks “Young and Wanted” vibes. If there was ever a time it was just a time it was just the two of them wrecking havoc on the seas this would be the soundtrack.

Mihawk. I don’t even have to explain once you listen you’ll just know

Honestly. This is mostly because this would be a great sex scene song. I don’t even like sex scenes in shows but I’m suprised this song has never been used and this just proves that’s because they lack taste. Also slightly toxic devotion very them.

I didn’t mean for this to get this long 😭. But yeah was very inspired by all y’all lovely lists and recs. Was very fun to go through! Let me know if you give any of these a listen and what you think!

Look Mihawk’s eyes definitely glow in the dark and this fact definitely threw Shanks of the first time he learned it which coincidently was during their *coughs* first time. But it’s kind of hot and he’s grown used to it now……mostly.

Because you know Mihawk is definetly the type of dude to never turn on a light ever and with his propensity for staring unblinkingly and his half hazard middle of the night sleeping habits. It’s a bit of a bit of a problem .

the years Shanks has lost of his life waking up to a floating pair of shimmering golden and ringed eyes staring at him in complete darkness he will never gain back and are best not talked out.

Also imagine if Mihawk is prone to midnight snacking (making up for all the food he doesn’t eat during the day to maintain his vampiric reputation) so many a red haired pirate have woken the ship with Shrieks having stumbled into the very dark kitchen to see a pair of otherworldly eyes completely demolishing a plate of leftovers or an entire charcuterie board staring right into their soul.

Ben and Yasopp have almost shot him multiple times(with only one of those times being on purpose) Many a crew member has solicited Shanks to get his boyfriend exorcised and the ship cleansed. In 2 years the closest Zoro ever came to cutting Mihawk was while blindly flailing his swords around in the dark trying to fend of the kitchen demon that besieged him during his midnight beer run. This will happen every night, they never talk about it. Zoro never figures out it’s Mihawk and is pretty sure the Kitchen is haunted. Won’t keep him from his midnight protein shake (he is no longer allowed beer)

Perona is the only person who is even slightly normal about this (she lived on thriller bark floating pair of eyes in the dark is child’s play) she just switches on the very bright white kitchen lights, effectively blinding Mihawk and leaving his terrible posture and he use of his precious kogatana to eat meatballs exposed to the light. She gets a cup of water turns off the light and leaves. The next day Mihawk buys her a new dress they never speak of this again.
