Naruto Founders - Tumblr Posts

I’ve been stuck in the Naruto (founders era mostly) fandom for some time now, and finally managed to throw something together to post. Enjoy some Tobirama and Hashirama sketches :) I gave Hashirama a little sprout on top of his head that changes based on his mood (it flowers when he’s excited, wilts when he’s sad or getting relentlessly bullied by the combined powers of Tobirama and Madara…). I just think it’s neat.

I love them both so much and reading fics where they’re in a healthy sibling relationship makes me irrationally happy (though they’re quite rare, since Hashirama is often portrayed as evil for some reason 😅 - no matter, I’ll still read them).

I also sketched them planting a tree together. In my mind, they’re planting it on the day of the official establishment of Konoha, so it will act as a reminder of peace for many years to come. It’s set in a world where nothing is wrong, Izuna is alive and well, Madara isn’t insane, Konoha is thriving (happy endingy FTW).

I’ve been a bit under the weather lately. Thankfully, my final exams (the most difficult exams in my life) are behind me (I’m still waiting for the results, but I’m pretty sure I passed), but unfortunately, my portfolio for an art college I had applied to had been rejected. I’ve never liked my artstyle (and art in general), and the rejection hurt me more deeply than I thought it would. It fuels my insecurities about my art to the point where I was second-guessing if I should post these sketches or not. I’m constantly worried that they look fine to me, but horrible to others, but I managed to convince myself to post them nonetheless. No worries though, I plan on practicing more, now that I have more time. I’ll probably post more as well (no promises), and I also thought about writing a bit (fanfics). I’m excited to see where life takes me, since it kinda came crashing down on me in the past few days, but I’ll pull through, I’m sure. There's such a calmness to this, and a sense of surrender, perhaps even a hint of grief... I don't know exactly what I feel when I look at it, but it is something that soothes me. ❤️

Madara's Best Friend

If Madara and the others in this post lived under different circumstances, I think it makes more sense for Madara to be ‘best friends’ with either Tobirama or Gai. They are more compatible with Madara than Hashirama. Not considering Izuna as Madara’s best friend since that wouldn’t be fair. Izuna probably knew Madara better than Madara knew his own hand. No I don’t ship Mads with Hashirama, Tobirama, Izuna, or Gai, but seeing wholesome MadaGai comics made me think how this entire time, those artists had a point.

Hashirama

Others have discussed this extensively, but while Hashirama is the only one who can fight Madara as an equal, he wasn’t a good friend to Madara. Beyond the initial founding of Konoha, which stemmed from a genuine desire for peace and wanting a better future for young ones, Hashirama was selfish in his motivations for why he wanted Madara to stay in Konoha. It was always about the village for Hashi. There was never genuine reflection about Madara’s concerns or consideration for his well-being, even when Madara was basically screaming for help in his own way. Hashirama was also not even close to Madara on an intellectual level. Not that I think Hashirama was the total airhead he liked to present himself as. On the contrary, I think he was often quite manipulative when he pretended to be dumber than he is. But whereas Madara had the capacity to foresee far into the future the issues about shinobi villages due to their social structures, Hashirama was set on his ideals of what the village must be like and unwilling to stand up to defend his ‘friend’ Madara. And then he killed his best friend over his flawed beliefs once Madara no longer played by his rules.

I think Hashirama would only be suitable for being Madara’s true sparring partner/rival, even if Gai would exuberantly declare himself ‘rival’ anyways.

Tobirama

This only applies if Tobirama left Izuna alone.

Tobirama tried to make the village work. And to his credit, the village worked. It survived well into the future thanks to social structures and policies enacted by Tobirama. Tobirama was the one who propped up the village and ensured it ran smoothly after its founding, not so much Hashirama, even if Tobi’s ways eventually lent themselves to the dark underbelly of Konoha that Madara foresaw. The intentions were noble, even if his methods flawed.

If neither Tobi nor Hashi killed Izuna, Izuna would likely have survived until much later. If Madara was somehow convinced for a truce and to build a village anyways, Izuna at his side would be a much more level-headed negotiator than Madara and would ensure the treaty was fair to the other founding clan, the Uchiha, too. If the canon events had been even slightly different, I believe there was ample opportunity for the Uchiha to thrive as well. The entire story could have been so different.

Despite the abundant past misgivings between the Uchiha and Senju, I believe Madara and Tobirama could be friends who respect each other if Izuna lived and they were all working on Konoha together. They are much closer intellectually, quieter and more introspective, would be able to bounce more realistic ideas off each other, maybe invent new jutsu together. Tobirama was pragmatic and logical, which could be a better foil to Madara than Hashirama, who seemed to often drive Madara to extreme emotion.

Gai

This lovely cinnamon bun is among the purest characters in Naruto. There isn’t a single vile or dark thing about him. Even his teeth are shiny. He would be so good for Madara and his mental wellbeing, like he was for Kakashi. Gai tried to hang out with Kakashi when the Copy Cat was traumatized by multiple deaths so he wouldn’t be alone, protected Kakashi when he was distracted on a mission and almost got killed, and was just there when needed. Even when he was pushed away repeatedly, Gai never gave up on his friend.

If Madara had a real friend in Gai like Kakashi did, one who will be present and support his buddies through anything, who knows? I’m sure the grouchy hermit Madara would resist and try to push this overbearing green beast away too, but that wouldn’t stop Gai’s insistence. The ridiculousness to ensue would have been a balm for Madara’s tortured soul. Both men’s dedication to the future generations and physical training are also bonding points. With someone who still cared for him, maybe Madara wouldn’t have gone down the path he did so readily? Madara was at a point of total isolation without Izuna and the support of his clan, an untrusted outcast left with no one who still wanted his protection when he abandoned Konoha. At that point, he didn’t have anyone to look out for his back. He was also abandoned. It’s really tragic.

In how the darkness always curled onto them, the evil stung around, and the graveyard yearned for their touch. They were born into it, after all. Oh, and how sweet the power is, alive, running through their blow-out veins like water, eager to bend accordingly with their wills. Madara’s sharigan bleed onto the darkness, like a life-saver guide. The only light holding Tobirama back from falling into the abyss of calamity. "I will not hurt you, Kagami." Tobirama’s lips curled onto a sharp form. “Not if you don’t ask me to, my beloved heir.” Kagami always asked for the things he wanted so nicely, after all.

So, I had a thought a while back when I was watching Naruto. Specifically, the Tobirama vs. Izuna fight.

They all seem to have their special thing. Hashirama has his wood-style, Tobirama has his jutsu inventions/reduced handsigns, and Madara has his whole prodigy thing going for him. Then Izuna, as far as I can tell- is fast and prideful, but that's not really something out of the ordinary, considering his clan.

Watching him fight Tobirama made it occur to me how basic his style seems to be in comparison to the other three despite him being one of the four strongest on the battlefield. It felt like it was missing something- like he needed his own spice so to speak. He did train with Madara for years and was his partner in command.

I thought blue flames would be cool. They fit his character design, plus it seems appropriate considering his rivalry with Tobirama. Tobirama makes jutsu, he brings existing ones to a new level.

As such, I drew the image below. It was supposed to be a more serious and combative style, but I got distracted half was through. So this is how it ended up being 🙃.

Then I started fucking around and did this

I know Madara loved Izuna SO MUCH but they’re still brothers...can you imagine having fucking MADARA as an elder sibling? That shit sounds rough. He does the older-sibling lean and just snaps Izuna’s tiny little spine on accident. 

Same vise versa too! Having Izuna as a younger brother? He has ‘Youre not my boss’ written all over him. I can HEAR him going ‘Dad said you have to give me a turn with the good practice dummy’. 

I love how Izuna was on-screen for a total of like fifteen-twenty minutes but the fandom was like “No, no. That’s enough. We know all there is to know. He’s a brat. A lovable brat with a bad attitude.” even with so little context.

Tobirama, seeing the open and visible unconditional love of the Uchiha clan after being raised by Batsuma to keep all his feelings wrapped into a neat little ball in his stomach: I- hm. There's got to be a reasonable explanation for this. It's...ah, it's a curse, yes, of course. They're cursed with such strong emotions it rips through their resolve, destroying everything in their path without the ability to stop. Mhm. That's it.

Hashirama: Brother please

Forever one of the funniest concepts for me is any of the warring states characters (Hashirama, Tobirama, Izuna, etc) ending up in the future, hearing that Madara is around trying to cause harm to the village and going to check it out either to stop him or help. And just finding his unhinged adoptive grandson instead.
