Some of my favourite radio detectives :)

Episode 507 - Throw the Book at Them (Boston Blackie, Philip Marlowe, & Let George Do It)

Read along with our heroes this week in three old time radio mysteries where books play a key role in the crimes and their solutions. First, Boston Blackie tries to figure out why readers of a best-selling novel keep winding up dead. Richard Kollmar stars in this syndicated episode known as “Three Wind Blows West Murders.” Then, Philip Marlowe believes a murder victim’s scrapbook contains the motive for her death and the identity of her killer in “The Big Book” (originally aired on CBS on September 29, 1950). Finally, George Valentine helps a bookstore owner whose shop keeps getting robbed in “The Bookworm Turns” from Let George Do It (originally aired on Mutual on December 11, 1950).

Check out this episode!

I hadn’t heard that Malone had died. I, too, am sorry to hear it. I hugely enjoyed all the books of his I’ve read. Time’s Witness is one of the best mysteries I’ve ever read, and he wrote other kinds of novels, too. Try Dingley Falls.

Sorry To Hear Of The Death Of Novelist Michael Malone. Although I Never Met Him, We Have A Connection

Sorry to hear of the death of novelist Michael Malone. Although I never met him, we have a connection nonetheless. When I was in the American Studies undergraduate program at Yale, I wrote my senior essay (about 75 pages) on novelist Wright Morris, and my faculty advisor chose Mr. Malone, an instructor at the time (1980), as the second reader because he was a novelist himself. I got a good grade from the two of them, and I appreciate that because even though I worked very hard on that essay, in retrospect I don’t think it was so good. My understanding of Morris was fine, but I have never had any gift at all for structuring longer pieces of writing. The shorter the take, the better I do. (I was a professional movie critic at one point, and not only did I hate the standard review format, I especially disliked spinning out a negative reaction when a sentence or two would do.)

———

“Welcome back!” Fred greets me when I walk into the Daycare center.

“Hey, Fred.” A full day of sleeping after that night has passed. It was now back to my regular job, and I missed it. Seeing the animatronics in the day was a lot better than seeing them in the night.

Scott didn’t bring up Night Guard duty again since the last time he introduced the position. In fact, I was glad he didn’t. I kept going back and forth with how good the job opportunity was, and how bad the idea would be. If Scott asked me again, I probably wouldn’t have an answer.

Speaking to someone about it was the best idea. But with who? No one knows about the incident with Moondrop.

“Right, well, the kids made a mess over there, and Sunny is all over it.” Fred sighs. “The cleaning crew, I guess, didn’t bother to clean it up.”

I nod to my colleague. “Sure thing. I’ll take care of it.”

Walking across the play area, I notice a frantic Sunnydrop bouncing around as he looked at the mess. And a big mess it was. The shelf that had many toys on it had toppled over. The toys were everywhere.

“Clean up…! Clean up!” Sunnydrop says.

I get on my knees the best I could from wearing a pencil skirt. My hand finds its way to a toy train nearby my form, and I study its features. It was broken.

“Man. We’d have to replace all of the broken ones.” I say as I notice a few more toys broken.

“(Y/N)!” Sunnydrop seemed surprised at my appearance. “What should we do?!”

I giggle at his panic to clean things up. “Calm down, Sunny. We’ll get this cleaned up. In the meantime, could you put that shelf back up?” Why call strong workers when you have an animatronic to take care of it?

Sunnydrop has seemed to calm down, picking up the shelf effortlessly in a blink of an eye. Fred has brought a cart from the desk so we could put the broken toys in. I watch as Fred walks back to the desk to make a few calls beforeI turn to get back to work.

I toss a broken toy into the cart, looking at the pile of toys to find the other broken ones. “Hey, Sunny?”

“Yes?” He replies.

“Could I… ask you a few questions?”

“Of course, you can!”

“Do you know… an animatronic named Moondrop?” I was told from many coworkers, when I first started working here, that there was an animatronic named Moondrop. And you can see him in the posters all around the building. There was only one time that I saw him, besides the incident that night, when the power went out.

But never had I asked Sunnydrop himself about this character. And, really, I wish I hadn’t. Sunnydrop stood there, frozen in the spot. He didn’t say a word or make a sound. It almost terrified me to the point of running away.

I flinch when Sunnydrop suddenly jumps. “What?! Silly, (Y/N)! There’s only me!”

Now, that freaked me out.

He’s supposed to know about his partner. Sunnydrop and Moondrop are one.

He’s lying to me.

How is that possible?

Laughing nervously, I apologize to Sunnydrop and finish cleaning the area. When finished, I go back to my spot next to Fred. The long day has started.

———

Lunch break was like a breath of fresh air. I felt suffocated in the Daycare center, knowing that Melly’s words were actually true.

Realizing that he’s being controlled and doesn’t want to be. Meaning that he’s gaining control of himself. Gaining a personality. Feelings.

After my lunch, I use the rest of the time to check on the other coworkers. My luck has seemed to run out when I meet Vanessa.

“Good news! You’re my new night guard partner.”

She looked more thrilled for the job than I was.

Mummy?

Chapter 1: This Morning’s Newspaper

Scooby Doo Victorian au

⚠️: none

word count: 626

Summary: When a well liked and trusted stable boy goes missing in a wealthy neighbourhood, a few well off young ladies and gentlemen (and their dog) see fit to do some… investigation.

Mummy?

“Oh dear, Miss Blake, look at this,” Miss Velma Dinkley said as she passed the newspaper across the breakfast table to Miss Daphne Blake. Miss Blake looked down at the paper in her hands for quite some moments before prying her gaze away to look once more at Miss Dinkley.

“I don’t believe I understand what I’m meant to be looking at,” She said, setting the paper back in front of her breakfasting companion. Miss Blake took up her tea once more as she awaited an explanation of whatever it may be in the paper that elicited such a reaction from Miss Dinkley.

“Here,” Miss Dinkley opened the newspaper again and skimmed the page for the article she had previously been reading. Holding a finger to a headline that Miss Blake could not see from her vantage point, Miss Dinkley began, “Stable boy in East End disappears,” Velma glanced once more to Miss Blake, seemingly awaiting a reaction that wasn’t coming.

“So?” Miss Blake asked, her thin brows pinched together and her head tilting up in a way that told of her disinterest. “Servants disappear all the time, usually found in a poor house or pub in a few days,” She said, picking up her floral patterned teacup and taking a sip.

“So,” Velma started, slightly mocking Miss Blake’s apparent lack of compassion. “I happen to know this one,” She said, bringing herself around the breakfast table to show Miss Blake the drawing in the paper, “See?” Velma said as she pointed down at the picture below the bolded headline.

“He does look a bit familiar, though I don’t believe I’ve ever known him personally,” Miss Blake conceded slowly as she continued further studying the picture.

“Well, if you knew that young man better,” Velma began as she dropped the paper on the table, “You would know him to be a very responsible man, he’s not one for drink and takes his duties rather quite seriously,” Miss Dinkley lectured. She sighed, taking her spectacles in hand and rubbing where her spectacles had sat previously. “Charles, he just wouldn’t be in a poor house, he’s far too proud for that sort of place,” Velma said.

“I’m sure he’s around somewhere,” Miss Blake stood, putting a hand on Velma’s shoulder to assure her. “And if by some chance Charles happens not to be around, I know this rather sharp, bespectacled, young lady who will find him before the police will even have a lead,” Miss Blake smiled down at Velma.

“I’m sure you’re right, he’s quite probably fine,” Velma admitted, “But I still think we should call on Norville and Frederick, just to see what we do or do not find,” She said, turning back round to face Miss Blake, hoping to convince Miss Blake to indulge her concerns.

“I suppose we could nip round to see them, and I’m sure Scooby could use the walk that our meetings usually entail,” Miss Blake reasoned as she walked off to gather her hat and gloves. “Though you know we’ll have to walk, Fred will want to show off Brandy and Dolly, as though we haven’t seen them draw the carriage a thousand times or more,” Miss Blake shouted from the drawing room as she fastened her hat and put on her gloves.

“Yes, I suppose we will be walking,” Velma agreed as she pulled on her own, wrist length gloves. Though neither lady was really quite so concerned about the walk as Frederick and Norville could quite regularly be found on Fred’s estate, just some way a few streets down.

Velma and Miss Blake met in the foyer and walked out into the street as Miss Blake readjusted her gloves one last time, tucking the hems over her elbows.

Mummy?

Had fun with this one, hope yall enjoy this silly little story.

Ace of spades by Faridah Abike-Iyimide

image

Recently finished this Masterpiece. This was a very wild ride. Beautiful writing. A very deep look inside of the characters heads. I felt their pain. I understood their struggles. I read tons of YA mysteries and I didn't realize the lack of POC Characters and authors and how much I needed it until now.

Can I get a part 2? Please and Thank You :)
