Ok so I’ve been burned so many time by (YA) novels and other media about romances that were portrayed extremely poorly that I’m a complete and utter pessimist when it comes to reading/watching/playing anything romantic, but The Wayhaven Chronicles exceeded all expectations completely.
What I expected from the A romance: A being a complete asshole and the Detective having to suffer through it silently (YA novels have ruined me cause they’re all written like that), a little pining, little to no feelings.
What my dumb ass GOT from the A romance: A being a dummy who can’t just talk to people like a normal person because?? How does one do that??? Even though they actually mean well. The Detective is a badass who puts them in their place when they act rudely, A constantly being cautious of not taking advantage of the Detective (y’all know the scene I’m talking about), a whole shit ton of feelings and pining, uhhhh 1000 blessings from God.
What I expected from the N romance: Sickly sweet conversations about N’s concern for the Detective borderlining on patronizing (I blame YA novels again), N being very…inexperienced.
What my dumb ass GOT from the N romance: N being one SMOOTH, SUAVE, SOPHISTICATED OPERATOR, 100% was NOT prepared for but LOVED, Uhhh, mutual respect and friendship and admiration and support, and 1000 more blessings from God.
What I expected from the F romance: F constantly quoting memes, never taking anything seriously, flirting with anything that moved even while flirting with the Detective, maybe being a tiny bit inconsiderate of the fact that the Detective might want more than flirtation (not maliciously intended).
What my dumb ass GOT from the F romance: F being a consistent source of camaraderie and honest friendship, not just flirtation though there was plenty of that good stuff, my good sir, F thinking critically about how to use their abilities to protect the Detective, F being SO CONSIDERATE of the Detective’s feelings, well-being, adjustment to the supernatural, and HOLY GOD how much they care about wanting to do right by the Detective, Venus the Roman goddess of love gave me a thumbs up.
What I expected from the M romance: M being a complete asshole who cares a ZERO amount for other people’s thoughts and feelings and is derisive towards the Detective (the typical YA ‘bad boy’), presses a sexual advantage over the Detective even if the Detective makes it clear they aren’t interested. (This happens all the time in media)
What my dumb ass GOT from the M romance: THEY CARE! They try to pretend they don’t, they really do, but every time you show concern for victims or softness for other people M scoffs out loud but they MELT inside! TOTAL MARSHMALLOW M. Heavily flirts with the Detective but isn’t creepy or over the top about it, honestly more feels than I was prepared for, OW, I got a high five from Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love after flirting with M ten times.
Uhhhhhh so yeah please play The Wayhaven Chronicles, this was my review of the game (I didn’t want to bring up any plot points because I CAN’T SPOIL IT IT’S TOO DAMN GOOD I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR HOW MUCH I WAS GONNA LOVE IT) so please buy the game and play it, you won’t regret it, I promise!

T.H. White: Lancelot is bisexual and in love with both Guenevere and Arthur, also he's ugly as a monkey and has sadistic tendencies he's deeply ashamed of, and his whole motivation for becoming the Best Knight Ever is that he's been wallowing in self-loathing ever since he was a child. Both Mordred and Agravaine have an incestuous obessession with their mother, mainly born out of Morgause's emotional manipulation and abuse. Also, Mordred is an albino with some big Issues, but also a charimastic political leader, a nationalistic Scostman and the trend-setter of Camelot. Merlin literally defies the rules of temporal progression by existing, and his relationship with Nimue isn't al that bad. Kay exists, and so do Sir Ector and Sir Pellinore and Palamedes and the Questing Beast. It's raining anti-totalitarian political allegories and social discourse, Hallelujah!
Marion Zimmer Bradley: Morgana is a sympathetic (Wiccan-)Celtic priestess, and she didn't actually plan to have Arthur's kid. Morgana is Mordred's mom but Morgause still exists and she's the one who raises him. Arthurian women are important and deserve POVs.
Phyllis Ann Karr: There is a sad lack of Kay sass. To fix this, Kay investigates a murder mystery with Mordred in order to save Guenevere and sasses people while he's at it.
The Librarians: What if Galahad was immortal and lived in a modern setting as a middle aged guy fighting against supernatural threats and preventing the Apocalypse-or-something-like-that-at-least with his younger colleagues all the time?
Once Upon a Time: Okay but what if MORALLY AMBIGUOUS ARTHUR
Fate/Stay Night: Okay but what if GENDERBEND ARTHUR IN MODERN SETTING
Camelot 3000: Okay but what if REINCARNATED GENDERBEND IN SPACE
Mordred, Bastard Son: What if gay
The Knights of Camelot series: Seconds that^
Merlin - L'enchanteur désenchanté: Vivian dropped out of magic high school when a Viking got her pregnant, but then she finds love again with Merlin, who's supposed to teach Lancelot how to find the Graal. Morgana helps Vortigern fight Arthur because she's still bitter Arthur likes Guenevere better than her. Lancelot gets briefly turned into a girl. Nothing makes sense but it's okay, kind of.

new theory that the reason that Morgan le Fay came for Lancelot so hard (like, come on, she has amply demonstrated that she has many ways to fuck with Guenevere that do not involve capturing and tormenting Lancelot for years) is that she thought he was a threat to her title of Gothest in Logres. like yes she studied necromancy in a nunnery, sure, but the boy learned his name by reading it off of his own gravestone, that’s hard to beat
