watching martin eden for luca why did no one tell me this movie was fucking fantastic ?? martin is trying to desperately hard to assimilate into the upper class and he charms them just enough to be allowed into their spaces but is not (and never will be) truly accepted; his toxic trait of denying anyone who tries to help him is so fascinating to watch, even when it comes from a place of genuine care he just can’t handle it; the tragedy of thinking (of knowing) you were meant for great things but not having the privilege to make it happen AND EVEN WHEN HE IS FAMOUS THE ONLY TIMES HE IS HAPPY IS WHEN HE’S WITH MARIA AND HIS SISTER, he found happiness living with maria and her family but gave it up in one way or another to strive for something he thought would make him happy WHEN IT NEVER DID he starts hating his own books for the false promise of happiness he thought they’d bring; he’s become someone so far removed from who he was that he watches himself walk by and can’t stop it, can’t turn back time to find that person again
