The Fighters Of DnD 5eare Just As Adaptable As Ever, But Some Old Favorite Builds Have Been Left Out

The Fighters of DnD 5e are just as adaptable as ever, but some old favorite builds have been left out in the cold by its simplified mecanics. These three archetypes can help support fighting styles that may seem mundane on the surface, but take practice to execute.

The Bastion is a classic fighter archetype, wielding weapons and armor normally reserved for soldiers in formation as personal arms, and putting themselves in harm’s way so that their allies don’t have to.

The Skirmisher relies on thrown weapons, nimble feet, and an even more nimble mind to overcome their foes.

The Shock Trooper is a tank, to be sure. Shock troopers inhibit their foes, making such a nuisance of themselves that they are dangerous to engage, but fatal to ignore. I typically stick to blogging my own work and silently admiring others, but this one’s worth a share. It really breaks the mold for fighters, and while it might push the bounds of versimillitude a little, I think the gameplay variety is worthwhile. I originally thought it odd that the movement speed bonus for Remarkable Practice comes after the healing, as I considered the point of it to be to reach the wounded. However, it still effectively encourages you to rush for healing since you can get back into position easily, and seems to work as intended. The only question lingering in my mind is whether or not you can move between healing separate targets with Remarkable Practice’s 15th level upgrade. My gut says no since it doesn’t say anything about adjacent targets, but of course, it doesn’t expressly call out movement like the attack action. To my mind, both interpretations are valid with the current wording. Either way- fighters, take this and give your group’s forever cleric a chance to sling some damage spells!

Hello! This has been something I have wanted to make for a while now, and I am relatively pleased with how it came out. I really want to play this in one of my own games :D. If you would like to support me in what I create, then please consider donating. Here is my Ko-Fi! I also have a fun D&D Discord Server, for those of you which would like to join. Here is the link to download the Field Medic PDF!

October Brewfest Week 2: Warriors

Today we’ve got an update to the fighter archetypes I shared in the early days of this blog. This is mostly changes to wording but the capstone features of the skirmisher and bastion recieved substantial changes, removing saving throws and vague wording that might weaken them at the table.

It’s a shame these specialist archetypes can’t use yesterday’s conversion kit. I’ve been hint dropping all week, and you’ll have to deal with it for just one more day. Tomorrow, I’ll share a preview of something I’ve got on the anvil- Robilar’s Treatise on Combat.

That document will include some subclasses that use the Battle Master’s maneuver system out of the gate, as well as some feats to give other fighters a chance to get in on the action.  I’ll see you all tomorrow to round out week two of the brew festival!

Week 1: UnityDay 3: The Chaplain

Week 1: Unity Day 3: The Chaplain

The chaplain is a ‘medic’ martial archetype, serving to support and heal the party. With features like Chaplain’s Privelege helping you to reach position and the capstone Grace letting you deal out all the healing and buffs you need at a critical moment, the chaplain can keep themselves and their allies fighting long enough to regroup and seal the deal. I never felt like DnD had enough 1/4 casters- especially of the divine variety. Though the paladin may exist, I still feel like this scratches a different itch. You can access this document on the homebrewery here!
