Happy Mar10 Day! I beat Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope and wanted to Draw one of my favorite characters, Rabbid Rosalina.
So it's Mar10 day.
I love this franchise to death, so what better way to celebrate then... a possibly controversial opinion.
So we all remember this movie, right?
Yeah, of course we do.
It's the movie that cursed video game movies for well over a decade. The one that gave all video game movies a bad name. The one that made Nintendo shut down any and all films being made about their properties, and not touch feature films again until very recently.
You all know this movie, so what do I have to say about it? Well, honestly
It wasn't a bad idea.
Hear me out on this one, okay?
Imagine this Mario Bros. Movie never existed. And instead, we got a few decent movies about Nintendo stuff from the 90s till now. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc. Imagine we got all that and then, much later, someone said "we're doing a new take on Mario. A more dark, grungy take that tosses away the magic mushrooms for Firepower." How would you feel about that?
If you're still weirded out, yeah, of course you would be. But at the same time, Mario's been the same thing for so long... it'd be interesting to see.
In my opinion, the Mario Bros. Movie idea of a more Mad Max, grungy punk look for the Mushroom Kingdom is a very interesting idea.
It just came out at the wrong time. It should not have been the first Mario Bros. Movie
Again, if this had come out nowadays, I have no doubt that there would be a lot of people praising it for taking such a different direction, and it would probably get a big following. But for the first time around, you probably want to do something a bit safer so that people actually know "oh, this is Mario. I like Mario." Then come out with a new the to intrigue them.
Now, do I think the movie would be perfect if it came out today with NO changes? Of course not, there's some stupid ideas in the movie, like the goombas and stuff like that. It wouldn't be perfect, and it would probably still get slammed by critics.
But again, the idea is sound. And I think that's the important part of this. People write off this movie because of the dumb elements and what it did. And yeah, thats fair. But I feel like just saying there's "nothing redeemable about it." Kind of spits in the face of experimentation.
Besides, you'll never convince me the casting wasn't great in that movie. Specifically Bob Hoskins as Mario, and I'd even argue for John Leguizamo as Luigi.
The characterization is a bit off, yeah (though to be fair, it was the nineties, there really wasn't much there for the bros. At that point) but I look at them and I honestly do see a live action Mario and Luigi. Again, specifically with Hopkins.
I'll even say I like the general idea of the plot, with Daisy interacting with the brothers rather then Peach, since Daisy is the more active one out of the princesses, so it makes sense to make her the action girl of the movie.
I'm just saying, with a bit of tweaking, and if this WASN'T the first Mario Bros. Movie... I feel it'd looked back on a lot more fondly.

like the isometric mario maze i did a while back, this one was also originally made on paper for mario's 25th anniversary over a decade ago. i believe this is the last one in the set that had yet to be digitized!

Here's a belated treat for Mario's 35th anniversary: an isometric maze built atop Mario's running animation from SMB1! Use the pipes to travel between the different layers and make your way to the finish.
This maze is a full overhaul of one that I drew on graph paper for Mario's 25th anniversary, a whole decade ago! Once I came up with the idea for the pipes, I just *knew* I had to digitize this one, heh ✨
