S1 EP17: A Tiny Mistake I Noticed

I’ve been re-watching criminal minds recently, because I have nothing better to do. And I came across season 1 episode 17 “A Real Rain”.

In this episode, the killer is a vigilante whose day job is a typer person in a court house (I have no idea what they are called). He is killing people who he believes got away with crimes. During the episode, they sorta focus on the public’s reaction to this vigilante killer.

As they were going through the recordings from the tip hotline, they find a bunch of calls from people asking why they are even trying to catch this guy, and asking if they are jealous that the killer is doing a better job than the police.

Our lovely Dr. Reid points out that this is similar to the reactions for the Goetz New York shootings in “the early 80s”. Gideon says that Spencer wasn’t born yet, to which Spencer replies, “I read a lot.”

All-in-all a pretty cute moment. Fast and not really important to the episode as a whole. But what bothers me is that Gideon’s statement is just wrong?

The New York Shootings Reid mentions happened in 1984 (which I found out through a less-than-10-second google search). Since Reid turned 24 in season one, which took place in 2005-2006. He had to have been born in 1981 (google backs this up). So Reid was born during this time?

I think I get what Gideon was saying, Reid still would have been around 3 years old during the shootings and on the other side of the country. But still, as someone who loves timelines and dates, especially in shows like this one, it bugs me that they added a blatantly wrong statement like this.

It also makes me wonder what other kind of tiny (tiny tiny tiny) mistakes like this are also in the show.
