under hermitcraft, there is no capitalism

aight so I’ve just done a sociology A level and I’m starting university for Philosophy and Psychology and i was wondering why, despite the fact i think capitalism SUCKS, it seems to work in hermitcraft. Then i realised…. hermitcraft has no capitalism

Disclaimer: I’ve not studied this to high level yet, and whilst I’ve done a sociology a level, I did it over the course of year and took the first year and second year simultaneously and A level is only a level 3 qualification – I am not an expert and this may be entirellyyy wrong

1.     What is capitalism, exactly?

The Google defintion

Okay so first we have to define some terms. As with most ideologies and economic models, capitalism is sort of difficult to define. There are many ways to understand it, some of which I agree with and some of which I don’t. If you Google the definition of capitalism, the first result is ‘an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.’

Using this definition, Hermitcraft is definitely capitalist, because there is no centralised government which oversees the economy. Even the mayoral institution is not really a government, because it doesn’t actually…. Govern. Scar could theoretically make rules, but there is nothing in place to make the hermits obey the rules and there is no threat of consequences (in universe) if the hermits break the rules. He was elected to be the central decision maker in regard to how the shopping district looks and is used, but he does not currently oversee the economy within the shopping district, and the shopping district is not the only place trade occurs. (note this is subject to change, but right now I would argue even if he is a government he DEFINITELY doesn’t own the trade and industry).
