God now I want to write a fic like this except Eddie and Steve don't get back together, like a more angst filled fic, Steve finding out that Eddie thinks he hasn't changed making him start overthinking everything, like if Robin, Nancy, Jonathan and the kids also think he hasn't changed, making him start to become insecure about himself making him fall into a deep depression filled with self hate, Eddie calling Jeff and Jeff's mom, and them talking sense into him to talk to Steve and apologize, him going to Steve's house to find the door unlock, a not on the kitchen counter with the note either explaining that Steve moved out or that he couldn't keep going and committed suicide, Idk, I just want a really angsty fic like this
Pt 5/5
Read from the beginning
For a while, things are awkward. They don’t talk much. Whenever everyone hangs out together, they keep their distance from each other. But they send a lot of stolen glances each other’s way, and whenever they catch each other’s eyes, they do this awkward nod-and-tense-smile thing. One part of Steve is glad that Eddie is giving him the space he asked for, but the other half of him longs to be with him more than anything else.
Then, one night, he ends up talking to Jeff at a party. They run into each other outside and share a smoke while they catch up. They talk about nothing for a while: school things and the band and Family Video. They’ve never exactly been close, but Jeff’s a nice guy, Steve knows that much. It makes him feel safe enough to ask the one question that’s been burning on his lips ever since Jeff struck up a conversation with him.
‘How’s Eddie doing?’
Jeff looks at him with sympathy.
'He told me what happened exactly between the two of you,’ he says. 'We all saw it happen, man. All those dates you guys went on, and the way his whole face would light up whenever he was talking about you – which was a lot. It was a bit annoying, to be honest. We thought he’d figure it out eventually – and honestly? We all expected he was gonna get hurt. It looked like he was setting himself up for heartbreak, but we knew it wouldn’t help if we said something. He’s too stubborn.’
Steve can’t help but chuckle. 'He is.’ He misses him.
'For what it’s worth: I’m pretty sure he’ll never break your heart like that again.’
