Dustin gets attached to Steve and Eddie because of his own missing father figure. Mike struggles telling people he loves them and Nancy is indecisive when her relationships seem “too good” because they’ve seen how unhappy their mother is in her marriage, and seeing themselves ending up like her scares them. Steve teases and takes care of and protects his kids so passionately because he wants them to know they’re loved and wanted, because his parents never made him feel like those things. Max has so many walls built up and gets sarcastic and defensive because she didn’t get her survival instincts from her mom, she got them from Billy, and Billy was that way because living with Neil, he had to.

it’s interesting but also heartbreaking to see just how these kids mirror the loneliness and trauma of their parents/relatives, and how they do desperately fear succumbing to it fully
