The protagonist shouted in pain, throwing a rock from there and sand near that at the half-vampire. The rock hit them square in the chest but the antagonist kept stalking, sharp eyes catching the way the hero's eyes glinted in the moonlight.
"You're a bitch," the protagonist wheezed, stepping back, clutching their side, "and unrealistically made, too." They took in a deep breath, and released it with their next words, "that should've done something to your sternum."
The antagonist sneered, a few veins almost popping for a moment. Made. Made, like they were artificial intelligence and not just two halves of two slightly different people of the same species. Like they weren't half-human, or that their other half used to be a human once.
They lunged, and their opponent dodged, and one turn and a few long steps and they had a seething hero pinned to the wall.
The protagonist let out half a yell before the impatient antagonist drew close, clamping a gloved hand on their mouth. They shushed them harshly, and briefly found it too exhausting to lift their head up from where it was drooped down near the protagonist's neck.
Lord, this shouldn't be so hard.
The protagonist said—or shouted—something, muffled by the antagonist's hand. The antagonist straightened into the best posture they could make work while an angry protagonist was struggling against them, and then their eyes caught a glimpse of something thrumming against the protagonist's skin. Fast-paced, steady, its movement more discernible from their rush of adrenaline.
The antagonist almost zoned out at the sight of a pulse.
