One of our pet obsessions at B3 is the multitude of ways Bleach characters refer to one another. There is an Excel sheet, but we’ve only filled it out for Memories of Nobody and the manga through chapter 54 so far. I think all of the conventions of address are fascinating and telling, though, so I’m excited to fill out the rest!
Anyway, in honor of Byakuya’s birthday, I wanted to address one of my most all-consuming fascinations: The fact that Byakuya has, from Day 1 (or at least Day 90), called Renji “Renji.”
And it’s not just hood-wearing, haori-forgetting Byakuya that does this; I did want to make sure, haha. He does it straight through to their last interaction in TYBW when he sends Renji and Rukia off to Ichigo. Though LOL, honestly, seeing these all lined up I kind of feel like what’s even more notable is that Byakuya appears to address Renji by name a gratuitous number of times. It’s always at the end of a complete phrase that could not possibly have been addressed to anyone else. It’s not like he’s calling Renji’s name to get his attention and then saying his piece. He just says his piece and then is like, “Renji. Just to confirm. That was intended for you.” XD
But anyway, my all-consuming fascination is with why. Because Byakuya is also someone who goes around gratuitously referring to people by their full entire names. Sometimes he goes the extra mile and refers to people (of equal rank and below) by their titles, too. It’s just what he does. I mean, he does call Rukia “Rukia” but what else would one call a younger sister but her name? Renji, on the other hand, is already Renji before they even know each other. It’s not like Shirogane flies away and Byakuya decides he and Renji are gonna pal it up. I also don’t think it feels like an expression of intentional disrespect, really. Byakuya has other means and vocabularies at his disposal that he is perfectly happy to use for that.
Consider: Byakuya took one look at Renji’s horrible made-up peasant “family” name, thought “the utter fool,” and straight-up refused to ever address anyone by such a name, regardless of his measure of them, because doing so would require him to let it pass his lips. Particularly not someone he was about to hire as his vice-captain.
Renji introduced himself as Eminem and Byakuya was just like, “I will not be calling you that, Marshall.”
