Okay, so I've kept quiet
...about Ferguson, other than reblogging a crapton of info. It's not that I don't care, in fact, I really, really do. But as a white male, I'm starting to understand that this is a situation I will almost certainly never find myself in. I don't have to worry about an officer shooting me, simply because I had the happenstance of being born white. Because of this, I thought it best to stay in the background and let those for whom this is a real danger take center stage. Because of my privilege, It's not something I can speak to.
But then the Darren Wilson support groups kicked in, staffed entirely by white people like me. And I can't stay in the background for this.
Guys.
Guys.
HOW. DARE. YOU.
HOW.
DARE.
YOU.
A kid, a young man was murdered in nothing less than cold blood. And, instead of crying out that something so horrible be investigated, instead of screaming that justice be served for Mike Brown, we white folks are all crowding around donating crazy amounts of money to the killer like he is some sort of fucking national hero.
He is NOT.
He's a monster who deprived the world of a life. A life that didn't deserve to be shot like a dog, left to bleed out in the middle of a street.
He murdered a child. Mike Brown's parents are never going to see their kid again, and why? Because Wilson, a person like you and me decided that Mike Brown was worth nothing, simply because he was black.
Why the bloody hell are we not screaming to have him hanged? White people, we as much as anyone need to be standing up and saying NO MORE. No more Mike Browns. No more racism. No more hating people just because they don't look like us. This is 2014. White does not make right.
POCs have been saying this for, well, forever. But, guys? The white people, like you and me? We're the ones with power to change. Maybe we can't change the whole system by our individual selves. So band together! We can't sit silent in the background any more. We must take a stand. When you see or hear another white person being racist, put them in their place. Don't let fear stop you.
Your fear is much, much less than the fear the Mike Brown felt.
(To any POCs that read this: I am so, so sorry. And, I'm still learning my way around things like the idea of white privilege. So, if I said something to cause offense, please understand that I certainly didn't mean any. And let me know, so I can correct the behaviour in the future.)
