Rangers have a lot of scars.
Not all of them have such an heroic backstory though, some are stupid mistakes while others are just stupid. Either way they don't support the dark, mysterious and capable figures that rangers are often seen as.
A few examples:
Wrong reflex, seeing a movement while on a mission and standing completely still. Now holding a broken nose, they probably should've moved.
The temper of a horse, multiple rangers have a bite mark from when they annoyed their horse to much.
Angry cats, while most of them are cat people the apprentices always get told 'if you walk into an alleyway be aware of angry cats' so far three rangers don't have scratch marks.
Even rangers need sleep, some of them learned the hard way that after a long mission with little to no sleep it is not that unlikely to trip over your own doorstep.
Keep the cloak in check, the cloak is great and all until it catches on a branch almost chokes you and makes you fall on your butt.
Why would you? For some reason multiple rangers have fallen victim to a courier in one way or another and have been made to whear heels. Most of them didn't last very long, your guess who did manage it.
Coffee fight, maybe fighting each other over the last cup of coffee isn't the smartest idea and throwing hot coffee at each other because one offended your horse isn't the best either.
Does Halt ever just blank on Araluen?
Like he speaks it fluently which is understandable if you grow up as a crown prince so already knew the language and lived their for most of your life.
But it ain't his first language so he wouldn't be human if it didn't happen every ones in a while.
Like, I can just imagine him being really frustrated by a report from another fief because he doesn't know a word and can't figure it out either. Than having to go to Pauline to translate it for him.
Or when he just arrived in Araluen and the renegade rangers are discussing a random topic. While he just sits in silence trying to figure out by the conversation what that word means.
Or if either Will or Gilan uses a word he doesn't know but refuses to admit to his apprentice he doesn't know what their saying. But his apprentice is just confused and scared by the death stare their getting.
It'll be rare but it will probably happen every ones in a while. And him having to figure out by context what it means and being immensely frustrated when his not able to.
Halt can't cook.
In chapter 28 of book 10 Halt let's Will cook because 'he likes doing it' but Will points out that 'it's known that can Halt burn water.' He is then gonna tell us some examples but gets interrupted.
But how bad is Halt at cooking for Will to say this?
A few possibilities:
He had a flame in the pan enough times for Will to not look up anymore when there was a sudden flash of warmth and light in the kitchen for less then five seconds.
When it wasn't one of the few meals Halt can cook without burning it was either half burnt or Will was sent to town to buy them a meal.
The vegetables are either undercooked or burned. No inbetween.
Ones a particularly sleep deprived Halt had tried to boil steak. He didn't even notice till Will pointed it out and told him to go to bed.
Horace's always complaining to him that they won't get a single decently cooked meal if he has to seperate from them at missions.
Will eventually went to Jenny to ask for some cooking lessons. When he started to cook every night neither of them spoke of it.
Halt: What did you do?
Gilan: Why do you always blame me?!?!?!
Halt: Because it's always you.
Gilan: Not always......
I haven’t read The Stern Chase yet… but I know there is a wedding. I think it’s with Lydia and Ingvar but I could be wrong. So this is how I envision it going:
Ulf and Wulf are the flower girls. They twisted her arm until she let them.
Thorn acts as both the Father of the Bride and the Maid of Honor. He influenced Lydia’s life so much after what happened in her hometown.
Erak is the officiant. Since he is Oberjarl and is close to the Heron crew.
Jealous suitors of Lydia’s try to crash the reception. They are promptly knocked out.
Karina helps Lydia get ready. She is such a mother figure to her and I love their dynamic.
My thoughts on Brotherband Chronicles book 9: The Stern Chase
I didn’t have high expectations going into this one (thank The Missing Prince and Escape from Falasie for that) but it was so good.
The fact that it implies that Hal is a man whore. “But Hal wasn’t ready to settle down with one girl”. Is great
I love the Lydia and Ingvar pairing, and it is atypical how the main characters aren’t the ones to settle down first.
The fact that John Flanagan just… had a bear massacre and kill 5 people…
Ulf and Wulf being the bridesmen is so on brand and amazing.
They don’t have beards though, in my mind the entire crew is still 16.
The oar ramming is always my favorite move they make.
Erak’s hilfman isn’t Borsa anymore… that’s sad. But Erak threatening a sanction and a blockade? Amazing.
And Hal locking Jesper in the storage room to avoid a saga was my favorite scene. It’s the Skandian version of ‘hold my beer’.
Kloof and Erak’s relationship has progressed so much.
Overall 9/10. It had enough story for the plot if that makes sense. Escape from Falasie had too much plot for the story and The Missing Prince had not enough story in it.
Horace: Are they giving free food? Will: No, I'm just wondering if it's worth it Horace: It's not. If they're not giving free food, it's not worth it
Prompt #1 - Dawn
Dawn was Will's favourite time of the day. The golden rays that flooded Redmont, the stunning castle glowing red, and the perfect time to just breathe. The perfect time to climb his favourite tree and smile and...breathe.
Dawn was Jenny's favourite time of day. The happily chirping birds waking up and the most stunning blue sky coming from the pink hues of the sunrise.
Dawn was Alyss's favourite time of the day. The fresh air and the soft breeze that vlew through Redmont. The sunrise casting Redmont in shining red for all to see its glory.
Dawn was Horace's favourite time of the day. It was the perfect time for a jog, the perfect time to wake up and workout before breakfast, and it helped him focus.
Dawn was George's favourite time od the day. It was peaceful and calm. It was quiet and delightful. Dawn signified a new start, another chance, another day. It showed change and life, new and old.
Dawn was their favourite time of day for their own unique reasons, but perhaps it was their favourite time of day because they all got to see each other smile and bask in the glowing sunrise.
