Is an idiot but somehow part of a classified group.
Gilan would definitely get a pet chicken and name it chicken.
Jenny - Ruffnut
She matches Gilan.
Likes to just go along but won't hesitate to stand her ground if her or anyone she cares about are treated wrong.
Comes up with a plan and everybody is confused cause since when was she good at this stuff???
Cassandra - Astrid
Astrid is the skandian version of Cassandra
Both are fighters.
Won't hesitate to stab you if your annoying her.
Has a temper but a lot of patients with the people they care about
George - Fishlegs
Is a nerd
Shy but can also talk for hours.
Is an underrated character.

What does John Flanagan have with fire?
In the first book Halt is saved by fire.
Then in the second book the kingdom is saved by fire.
Then in RR Alyss dies by fire.
Then the antagonist of the book is killed by fire.
Why are the first problems in the series always something with fire? (Idk about BB I haven't read it yet)
What if the maids at the ward (very much) picked favourites?

An idea spiraled into an au but I'm to busy/lazy to write an actual fic so here you go.
When Will was younger he always played in the forest. This, of course didn't go without risks he often fell out of trees, came across a grumpy animal or was just reckless in general.
So he often came home with injuries. Eventually the maids started forbidding him to go to the forest if he got hurt. A completely reasonable rule but not in the eyes of six your old Will.
When he didn't stop the caretakers started to take away some stuff Will liked and gave it back when he went a week without hurting himself. The problem with this system, he often didn't make it as far as a week without injuring himself. At least, that's what most maids thought.

There was an unspoken agreement among the maids that Will's parents didn't actually die. Most believed that they just didn't want to deal with the child and ran away to have some wild life. Of course this caused some to act on it.
So he started hiding his injuries. And the worst part? He was good it. How? He was a determined, stubborn, creative and smart little shit.
At nine he managed to hide a broken arm for a week. He was eventually found out because of sloppy handwriting.
Of course the caretakers forbid him to go into the forest after that. Not that he didn't try sneeking out. He even succeeded in sneeking out and not a little bit too.
He started learning first aid so he could heal himself and not be found out. He loved playing in the forest, so if he was told he couldn't, it was like George not being aloud to read books, or Jenny not being aloud to bake. When he gave this argument he was told 'he shouldn't compare himself to the good kids' or something like 'at least their parents didn't run away with a sailor' so after enough of that he tried even harder to hide his injuries. And succeeded.
At the fights with Horace started. He knew why he did it but he still hated that he deflected his anger on him. Because Horace wasn't loved among the maids either. He had heard the maids talking about his parents and knew Horace did too because of the sudden anger. But he also knew a little more because of the time he snuck out to the village at harvest day. You hear a lot when you can walk silently. (Scroll down to know what happened with Horace's his parents)
After he past out from blood loss at eleven, it was eventually Alyss that explained to him that he shouldn't hide injuries. But old habits die hard, especially ones that started at such a young age.
When he became an apprentice it took a trained eye like that from Halt to notice when he was injured. He, of course, told him he shouldn't hide injuries and that it was dangerous. He apologized and was glad he wasn't forbidden to go do the things he liked because he injured himself.
After this happened a few times Halt got frustrated enough to fend to Pauline about it, who in turn told him she would ask Alyss if she knew why he did that. When asked she hesitated. She eventually said he has had the habit since he was six but didn't know why it started. When Pauline asked Halt to ask Will why he did it.
When asked, he hesitated but eventually told, cause why not? Well he didn't tell all the details but he did tell that if he got hurt the maids would take away stuff he liked. So if they didn't know he was hurt they couldn't punish him either.

At the end of book one Halt tells Will about his parents. He is happy that his parents were heroes maybe not as what he pictured them as, but they are so much better than that. He is also glad that he didn't tell Halt about the mistreatment. He knew Halt would only blame himself for putting him there and beat himself up for not looking after Will.
Halt had done so much for him. The least he could do was make him feel good with leaving Will at the ward. At the same time, he decided to tell Horace what he heard at the market when he was ten.
Horace couldn't be happier to hear that his parents were good people and how cool his mom was regardless of her past.

Horace his mother was called Jane and his father Marco.
When Jane was young she was forced into the prostitute business by her dad. Eventually she was basically sold to a 'hoe house' where she was forced to give random men pleasure. She found it horrible and even considered suicide.
But then Marco a friend of her right before and at the beginning of when her dirty life began walked in.
He had heard some people talking that Jane worked in a hoe house. He knew her dad forced her to because he was the only one she had trusted enough to tell the truth about her dad.
Not wanting his friend to live a life of misery because of her dad. He decided to get her out of there, and he did.
He took her to his bakery and helped her recover. She even learned how to wield weapons to protect herself and Marco. The sword was her favorite, she was good at it to.
Life was good and they eventually fell in love. They married and got Horace. But then everything went wrong.
Morgarath struck, they luckily weren't recruited for the army but a lot were, which let to a rapid decline in sales. Unfortunately they weren't the only one with an empty wallet. One night someone tried to robe the bakery. Luckily Jane was a light sleeper and woke up.
She identified the sounds, grabbed her sword and ran down stairs. Ten to one was never a fair fight. So when Marco came to help, it was already to late, he tried to at least protect Horace. And did so, with his life. That night seven year old Horace felt the life drain from his parents while he was held in their embrace.
In his own village his mother was known as the woman that could wield a sword. Outside of their village, she was still known as a prostitute.

Should I do what i did with Horace do with the other wards? I kinda want to but also don't know if I have time.
I will do a p2 of their friends finding out about the mistreatment and how good Will really is at hiding injuries. Don't know when since I'm also trying to finish another fic.
Btw I don't know about the names for horace's parents. I just didn't wanna say 'horace's mother' or 'horace's father' constantly.
Please tell me what you think, I appreciate good and bad criticism.
In a httyd au, what dragons would the ra characters have?
I think Will would have a Night Fury. I know ranger dragons shouldn't draw attention but he found it in the forest as a child while the Night Fury was barely more than a hatchling. Both got attached, you know the results.
Gilan I think would have a Hideous Zippleback cause he got the same vibe as Tuffnut (idiot but useful).
Horace would have a monstrous nightmare cause he's knight and that would be the typical dragon for knights.

We can just do a memorial week. Where everyone makes fanart or fanfics of dead souls.
Not just with Crowley, Alyss and Pritchard but with the less important characters too like Caitlyn, the parents of the ward kids or that one ranger that died in the Royal ranger I, maybe even some villains.
Just one week where we remember them all.
I have a proposal to make.
How about for Crowley and Alyss's anniversary, we do it for the day The Royal Ranger got released, since we don't what days they actually died.
The only slight problem with that idea though is that it got released on slightly different dates for different countries.
New Zealand: 1st October
America: 4th October
Canada: 5th November
People can just do it for their country or what Evers closest to their country. I'm doing New Zealand dates though because Woo. Kiwi's!! 🇳🇿
Same with Pritchard's anniversary:
September 16th. I can only find one date for the three second search I did so that works.

Random Thoughts Ranger's Apprentice
I want Alyss to live, and raise at least two kids with Will. I refuse to accept any other ending for them.
Prompt #1 - Dawn
Dawn was Will's favourite time of the day. The golden rays that flooded Redmont, the stunning castle glowing red, and the perfect time to just breathe. The perfect time to climb his favourite tree and smile and...breathe.
Dawn was Jenny's favourite time of day. The happily chirping birds waking up and the most stunning blue sky coming from the pink hues of the sunrise.
Dawn was Alyss's favourite time of the day. The fresh air and the soft breeze that vlew through Redmont. The sunrise casting Redmont in shining red for all to see its glory.
Dawn was Horace's favourite time of the day. It was the perfect time for a jog, the perfect time to wake up and workout before breakfast, and it helped him focus.
Dawn was George's favourite time od the day. It was peaceful and calm. It was quiet and delightful. Dawn signified a new start, another chance, another day. It showed change and life, new and old.
Dawn was their favourite time of day for their own unique reasons, but perhaps it was their favourite time of day because they all got to see each other smile and bask in the glowing sunrise.
