I don’t know who originally came up with the name Captain Subtle, but I think it is ingenious!

Firstly sorry this is very long. Secondly I made this dark frontier comic 2 years ago as a speed drawing MS paint challenge (x). It’s been rediscovered so I figured I’d redo it a little better.  For superficialmycosis.

Crime and Punishment

Pairing: Kathryn Janeway x Seven of Nine

Word Count: 808

Warning: none

A/n: Prompt 47 (Birthday) from @hauntedmoonchaos 's J7 event in February

Crime And Punishment

"Come in." Kathryn sat at her desk, working. Even though it was late already, and her shift was long over. Hearing the door open, she slightly lifted her head, a smile pulling up the corner of her lips.

"Captain." The woman in front of her greeted her and made her way over to the replicator. Kathryn stood up and walked to her couch, sitting down with her coffee still in hand, not sure what the other's intention was.

She heard the familiar sound of the replicator and saw a small cake appear. The young woman sat down across from Kathryn, holding the cake out to her. Hesitantly she grabbed it, placing her cup on the table. The cake was a beautiful shade of red with white decoration on top. Right in the middle was one candle, lit already. Looking at the other woman she saw an expectant look.

"Seven...?" Kathryn was quite confused, what was she supposed to do.

"It's your birthday. I've read in the files on traditions on earth that the Doctor gave me, that it's common for humans to blow out a candle on a cake for their birthday." Kathryn's heart warmed at the thoughtfulness. A smile appeared on her lips.

"That's very nice of you, Seven. But I'm afraid my Birthday isn't until tomorrow."

"Maybe you should check the time." Confusion washed over the Captains face.

"Computer, what time is it?"

It's 0002 hours, May 20th.

The monotone voice of the computer cleared the confusion. Honestly, Kathryn hadn't realised the time. Her shift had been over for multiple hours. Grinning at Seven she blew out the candle. For a second, she lost herself in the blue eyes. Her thoughtfulness and caring had moved her. She was proud of the progress the young woman had made, but that wasn't all. And she knew it, deep down she was sure of it.

"How did you know my Birthday?" Kathryn replicated two plates and some cutlery. Handing one if each over to Seven, she looked at her questioning. Encouraging her to speak, she cut the cake.

"When I was first integrated into the crew, I studied the files of each crewman. Yours too. I remembered it." Taking a bite of the cake, a content moan slipped Kathryn's lips. It was her favourite cake, she hadn't eaten it in forever. Nearly having forgotten about it.

"Oh, Seven. How did you know this was my favourite?" The sparkle in Kathryn's eyes, made Seven's stomach turn. She had come to feel this way around the Captain a lot more recently, yet she didn't understand it.

"I asked Commander Chakotay." Kathryn's eyes followed her hand as she placed the plate on the table and grabbed a wrapped gift from behind her. Kathryn hadn't seen it, when she walked in. Her eyes widened as Seven gave it to her. She hadn't expected cake, even less a gift.

"I- Thank you, Seven. This wouldn't have been necessary." Seven kept quiet, her usual serious expression on. And yet, there was an unusual fondness in her eyes.

Carefully Kathryn unwrapped the gift, uncovering a beautiful blue book cover. There were golden flowers all over it, framing the title.

Crime and Punishment

Fjodor Dostojewski

"Seven." The name left Kathryn's mouth, not more than a quiet breath. She felt her eye's water, the book was beautiful. It was her favourite, and no one had made an effort to make that much research since she had gotten to the delta quadrant. Suddenly she felt all her prior loneliness wash over her, feeling like Seven cured it. Even if just for the moment.

"You don't like it. I apologise, Captain. I can replicate a new one." Seven's brows furrowed in concern. Seeing the tears in her Captains eyes made her jump to a wrong conclusion. She had come far, but there was still a long way ahead of her.

"No, I love it." Kathryn's voice was thin. Looking up at Seven caused a tear to fall down her cheek. Hastily she wiped it away, but Seven had already seen it.

"Captain, there is no need to lie. You are crying."

"They are happy tears, Seven. The first in a few years." Kathryn reached out, covering Seven's hand with hers, which caused the young woman to slide closer. For a moment, they forgot all and everything around them. Just looking into each other's eyes, loosing themselves in each other. And like someone had hit her with it, Seven realised what the stomach turning meant. What the heat on her cheeks meant, and what it was she felt. The Doctor had told her about all of those symptoms. She had fallen in love, something she had deemed impossible.

But hadn't she been the one to tell Captain Janeway that impossible was used far too often? She should have had more faith.
