it's half past eleven, i gotta get up at five a.m. & i can't sleep at all since my brain's going a mile a minute:-) dysphoria's also kicking ass again! fun times

I'm already out of order but I came in with a decent understanding of all the characters and overall important events..

Started with The Adventures cause we already owned it..

But reading A Study in Scarlet next

I realized a lot of people don't know what order to read the sherlock holmes stories in. Honestly it really doesn't matter, as long as you read the first two correctly. but here's the order I would read them in.

Most importantly you need to read A Study in Scarlet first. It introduces Holmes and Watson and the art of deduction and everything else important.

Next you should read The Sign of (the) Four, which introduces Holmes's drug use and also Watson's future wife

After that read The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, then, the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, then read The Valley of Fear. After that, read The Return of Sherlock Holmes, then His Last Bow, and finally, the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes.
