As an ace, I say we claim Adam Warlock as our chosen superhero representative. I'm convinced the golden boi is demiromantic/asexual. “I never thought I would be raising a child.”

“Atleza is hardly a normal child.” Adam’s eyes lingered on the young girl as she studied. There was much for her to learn and in such a short time. What should have been the task of the last guardian of the multiverse was instead theirs. His gaze drifted back to Gamora.

She had drawn her knees up to her chest and though she was looking at Atleza, her gaze was somehow seeing beyond. Perhaps into the past. “Neither was I.”

Adam had never experienced a childhood. Literally. He had come out of his cocoon as Him, a fully-formed man, though not a terribly bright one. He still would not claim any sort of enlightenment but he was better. Gamora, though, had been raised by Thanos with the intention to kill Adam. Strange to think about, considering their current relationship. He waited for her to continue.

For a few moments, Gamora only stared at Atleza, but then spoke. “Thanos had me fight daily. At first, until I could defeat his androids. Then he made better versions of them. Then he made a better version of me.” But she said it with such contempt that he did not believe it. “Eventually, I fought and killed his men, too. I was sure I could take on anything. I thought how lucky I was to have someone train me, give me the tools to take my revenge. But that’s not… It’s not…”

Adam’s hand came to rest on her shoulder. “It is not how a child should be raised.”

Gamora’s eyes hardened with hate and anger, her fist clenched, and then the emotion evaporated. “It is not.” The words slipped out on a tired sigh. Her hand raised to cover his. “Adam, when she’s not studying, when we’re just…with her…” she finally tore her eyes from Atleza to look at him. “I feel like I’m healing a part of myself. Is that…strange?”

“You are giving her what you wished for yourself. I do not think it strange at all.” 

She squeezed his hand and her eyes closed. If she could cry, she would have, though not out of sadness. Not out of hurt or anger. While Atleza may be confined to this pocket outside of the universes, she hoped that the little girl would remember them fondly. That these would become cherished memories for the long, lonely road ahead of her. Just as they would be for Gamora.
