Joy.

“God, I’m good!”

Joy smiles. From her place on top of the stool, she turns her head to the source of that sentence, finding Olivia in the kitchen looking down at something with a grin, her hands up in a dramatic gesture of adoration. Joy quickly hangs the last balloon up at the ceiling before getting down to finally see the cake her roommate had been working on since this morning.

When Joy gets to the kitchen, Olivia is inspecting the cake in order to find any flaws on her masterpiece, her hair is up in a messy bun leaving the back of her neck exposed. Joy holds her from behind, her hands snaking around Liv’s waist startle the girl a bit. She let her chin rests on her shoulder. In front of the girls, a glorious chocolate cake stares back at them.

“Did you like it?” Liv turns her head to the side delivering the words too close to Joy’s ear, which causes a shiver to run down her spine.

“Are you kidding?” She lets go from the girl’s body, moving closer to the cake to get a better look. “This looks phenomenal, one of your best works so far.”

Olivia stretches her arm a bit to reach the white with blue details bowl that’s resting on the counter. “Here, for the compliment.” She hands the bowl to Joy whose eyes sparkle at the sight of frosting.

“You know me so well.”

“How long until they get here?”

“Half an hour,” Joy replies, taking a look at the millennial pink clock that matches perfectly the wall it is stuck to. “And Sam will be here at seven.”

“What did you tell him.”

“He’s been talking about that new restaurant down the street for a while, so I told him I made reservations for a quiet, romantic birthday dinner. He thinks he’ll just come here to pick me up.” She takes a last spoonful of frosting to her lips and starts washing the few dished Liv hasn’t.

“Instead, he’ll spend the night in our tiny living room with drunk people and questionable music. Very disappointing, I’m pretty sure he’ll love it.” There it is, that british dry sense of humor Joy had learned to love.

“I’m always hoping for the best,” she replies with a small laugh.

It doesn’t take long for Joy to feel soft lips pressed lightly against her cheek, something Olivia always does to remind her roommate she’s actually very sweet. “I’m going to take a shower,” she announces, making her way out of the kitchen.

“Thank you for helping me with all of this.” Liv stops in the middle of the living room to look at Joy. Above her head, the Happy Birthday Sammy sign they early hung moves the slightest, kissed by the nice spring breeze coming from the balcony.

“You know I adore Samuel, love. You don’t have to thank me.” And with that, she disappears through the hallway.

When Joy announced she was going to share an apartment with Olivia, her friends said that was a terrible idea. Sam was their main concern. Everything about Liv reek of sexuality and eroticism, and that makes men crazy. That makes her dangerous. Joy never worried about that though, first, because she trusts him; second, because she trusts her. Olivia is many things, but homewrecker isn’t one of them.

The girls met in a pub. Olivia walked in alone and the way all of the men there turned their heads to look at her made Joy’s friends mad. Joy, on the other hand, found herself hypnotized by the amount of power that tiny body could fit. The girl had her nose up to the sky and the confidence of her walk could be felt from miles.

She still can’t explain why, but when that stranger sat by the bar and ordered her drink, Joy got up from her chair without saying a word and walked to her.

The mysterious grey eyes were the first thing she noticed, she knew immediately that’s where she keeps all of her secrets. Then, it was the flirtatious manners. Olivia leans in when she speaks, her half lidded eyes carry so much intensity it’s impossible not to get trapped in their glow. And there’s also the accent. Joy has always found british accent sexy, but Liv’s is something else, nearly orgasmic.

What people seems to judge as her trying too hard, Joy has always known it’s just the way she is. People tend to see Olivia as some sexual object and completely miss or ignore what’s inside. Joy saw it though, and that’s how almost a year ago the two best friends ended up moving in together.

Joy decides to take a shower as well and, while her body is there, feeling the warm water running down it, her mind is somewhere else. She let her thoughts wander to Sam. He’s a party boy, always drunk or stoned with his friends, jamming to whatever is playing like his life depends on it. That’s not what had been promised to him for tonight, though and the idea of disappointing the boy terrifies her.

With her hair still wet, she gets inside her new peachy, satin lingerie set and takes a look at herself in the mirror. She has to laugh at the thought of her friends worried about Olivia and Sam, it sounds like a cruel joke, a way to let her down. She has nothing to worry about; it doesn’t matter how beautiful and sexy Liv is, she’s still beautiful and sexy too, and it’s her Samuel loves.

Red dress and high heeled boots on, she gets out of her room to find Liv sitting comfortably on the navy blue couch, a lit cigarette hanging from her red tinted lips.

“Sam is lucky I respect him,” Olivia is looking at Joy, grey eyes peeking through her lashes. She takes the cigarette between her fingers and blows out the smoke. Sexy.

“What do you mean?”

“You’re pretty hard to resist to, love.” Joy has to laugh at that. She walks the few steps keeping them apart and takes the cigarette between her own fingers, mimicking her best friend’s previous actions.

“Have you ever had sex with a girl?” Her cheeks turn instantly to a light shade of pink, but that’s a questions she’s been meaning to ask for a long time now. Olivia doesn’t seem to mind.

“Once, and it was quite an experience. I like boys, but there are some girls that make me feel just like they do. You were once one.”

“Really?” Joy takes a last drag and hands the cigarette back to her friend, finally sitting by her side.

“When I first met you I really wanted to take you home. Sam is a lucky bastard.” Joy’s face meets the ground and she can almost taste the red as it takes over her face again. She chuckles, anyways.

“I would’ve probably said yes if you had tried something.”

“I thought you were utterly straight, darling.” Olivia looks at the girl beside her with an eyebrow raised, clearly amused with the whole conversation.

“I am, but you got me feeling things.” Olivia’s gaze on her is intense, it almost burns; so does the hand resting on her knee. “Until you throw up on my new dress, of course.” It’s Liv’s turn to blush, though she can’t hold the hysterical laugh that escape her lips.

“A great way to start a friendship, in my opinion.”

The doorbell rings, making them get up from the couch. Joy takes a good look at her friend for the first time. Her wavy brown hair is parted to the side, her freckles lighter from the makeup and lips a dark shade of red. She’s wearing a very short, black slip dress, a few necklaces calling attention to her chest and the Dr. Martens boots that are practically part of her body at this point.

Joy walks to the door, opening it to reveal Danny, Josh, Jake and Brooklyn standing in front of her. The first two have huge smiles adorning their faces, the couple behind them however, doesn’t seem to be sharing their happiness.

“This is Olivia, my roommate,” she announces once they’re inside, pointing to the pretty girl standing where earlier laid the coffee table they decided was better if they put somewhere else, to get more space.

Josh is the first one to walk to her, offering a hand. “So you are the famous Olivia. I’m Josh, Sam’s older brother.” He takes her hand to his lips making her smirk at his boldness.

“Nice to meet you, Josh.” Joy can’t see the boy’s face, but she is very aware of what that look she’s giving him does to men.

“I’m Danny.” The tall boy shakes Liv’s hand, earning the same intense gaze as Josh.

“Nice to meet you.”

“Jake.” That’s all the last man says before offering his hand, but his low voice has a hint of lust hidden behind it.

“Sam’s other brother, I presume.” The way she looks at him is a bit different, her eyes scans his body and she quirks up the corner of her mouth once their back to his own. “Fucking good genetics,” she mutters.

The blonde girl standing behind him clears her throat loudly, making him look at her. “This is Brooklyn,” he tells her in an almost bored tone. “My girlfriend.”

Liv’s face falls a little, but she quickly recovers, gracing Brooklyn with the same intense look she had offered to the males present.

“Come on, darling,” she says, placing a hand on the blonde shoulders and letting her index slide down her arm. “Let’s take this purse to my room, shall we?”

Jake lets out a sigh after they disappear, walking tiredly to Joy. “Can I have a beer? Or perhaps something stronger.”

“Troubles in paradise, honey?” She asks, heading to the kitchen with him following close behind.

“I don’t fucking know what paradise is for a long time now.” He sighs again, taking the red cup his brother’s girlfriend handed him.

By the time Sam texts informing he’s leaving to go get her, the room is already filled with people, hers and Sammy’s friends. She can’t really read his face when she opens the door and the chorused “happy birthday” startles him, but the strength of his hold and the kiss he devours her with, make it very clear disappointed is the last thing he is.

He spends the whole party with his arm around her waist, dragging her to every group of people he goes to in order to interact and make small talk. Joy was worried about Olivia, since the only people she knew there was Joy’s friends who, by the way, don’t really like her. She makes herself comfortable with the Kiszkas, Danny and Brooklyn, though.

She drinks quietly, laughing at their jokes and punctuating something from time to time. She is more of an observer anyhow, so Joy doesn’t find it weird to see she is spending most of her time with them in silence, watching they every movements.

Afters hours of walking around the room, Sam finds a places for them at the couch. Around them, their friends and family drink, laugh and dance. Joy allows her eyes to walk away from her boyfriend for a second, spotting Olivia hidden behind her camera, taking candid shots of the couple.

“Hold still,” she asks after being caught. “I’m taking the polaroid.”

“She’s taking the polaroid,” Joy tells Sam after the girl disappears. “That means she loves us.”

“Can you guys please move?” She sweetly asks the other people on the couch the moment she gets back, her beloved polaroid camera in hands.

Sam puts his hands around his girl’s waist, watching as she sticks out her tongue. Liv takes the picture and smiles, sitting by their side to wait for the photo to make room on the film.

“Are you enjoying your party?” She asks, placing a hand on his knee.

“I am, it’s amazing. I saw you were enjoying Danny’s lips not too long ago.”

Joy watches the smirk forming on her boyfriend’s face and lets out a laugh when her best friend slaps him in the arm.

“Shut up, wanker.”

“But I have to ask, though” Joy begins. “What happened there?”

“He was interested and I’m not one to deny a kiss to a pretty boy.”

“Fair enough.”

“Done,” Liv announces, smiling to the tiny photo she’s holding. “You’re my favorite couple,” she states, handing them the picture.

“Can I have it?” Joy asks.

“Fine, but let me take another, I want one for myself.”

“You’re spending two films on us? That really is love,” Sam remarks, making both girls laugh.

“Now if you excuse me,” she begins after taking the second photo. “I’m taking this to the safety of my room before something bad happens.”

She leaves them alone, walking to her room and coming back with her regular camera again, taking candid pictures of everything that seems to amaze her. By the end of the night, Sam’s brothers, Brooklyn and Danny are the only guests left in the house.

Olivia and Jake shares the couch with the couple, while the rest of them try to make themselves comfortable on the floor. As they all talk, Joy catches herself watching Brooklyn who doesn’t seem very happy with how well her boyfriend and Liv seems to be getting along.

“I guess we’re going now,” Josh announces after what feels like an hour, getting up from the floor followed by the rest of them.

“You’re not driving, right?” Liv asks, concerned about the drinks they had.

“We’re getting a uber, don’t worry,” Danny replies, placing his big hand on her shoulder.

Joy leads them to the door after they all had said their goodbyes. Behind her, Sam and Liv collect the empty red cups that seem to be everywhere.

“I’m going to my room.” Olivia walks to Sam, giving him a hug and a peck on the cheek. “Happy birthday again.” After three steps, the girl stops to look over her shoulder. “I believe she has another surprise under that dress,” she states, pointing to Joy. “I know she’s something, but try not be so loud, please.” She gives Joy a smirk and wink before disappearing through the hallway.

“Another surprise, huh?” Sam’s hands meet Joy’s waist, pulling her closer to his body.

“Happy birthday, lover,” she whispers in his ears before leaving a wet kiss on his neck.
