the sun shines through the window in the living room, warming a spot on the wooden floor and lighting the room up. your feet graze the soft carpet, tickling your skin as you make your way to the kitchen, trying to make as little noise as possible.
birds chirp in the background while water heats up in the water boiler, making a bubbling sound. you grind your teeth at the noise, hoping that it isn’t too loud. you open the fridge in the most careful way ever but one of the magnets falls on the ground, immediately bouncing off the kitchen tiles and hitting your bare foot.
with a sigh you lean over to pick the little object up, rubbing your injured feet with the other one. you smile as you take a look at the little magnet, a souvenir your boyfriend had gifted you when coming back from one of his tours.
you remember how he had come home that day, all tired from the long flight but smiling nonetheless when he found you nodding off on the couch, forcing yourself to stay awake for his return.
he had held you close that night, whispering sweet things in your ear as you passed a hand through his soft hair, urging him to sleep.
you let out a faint giggle at the memory before placing the little flower magnet back on its designated spot. grabbing a few things and placing them on the counter, you prepare yourself a quick breakfast, buttering your toast with haste. just in time, a little ping goes off, indicating that the water is ready.
you stand up on your tiptoes to grab your favorite mug when you notice that it’s not on the top shelf of the cabinet like usual but on the lowest.
when the bedroom door creaks open at the end of the hallway, you lower your head as you continue to sip at your coffee. footsteps echo through the apartment as minghao pads over to the kitchen, hissing as his feet make contact with the cold tiled floor.
he wraps his arms around your waist, bringing you back to his chest as he puts his chin on your shoulder, nuzzling his face in the crook of your neck.
“i’m sorry that i woke you up, i didn’t mean to make so much noise.” your voice is low, like a whisper falling from your lips.
minghao tightens his grip on you, squeezing your waist and kissing your neck, his lips touching your skin as delicately as possible and brushing over it for a few seconds afterwards.
he clears his throat, lifting his head up from your shoulder. “it’s okay. besides, i didn't feel like sleeping without you by my side.”
“you dork, you should have stayed in bed. i was coming back in a few minutes.” you giggle and turn around in his hold.
when your eyes land on him, you smile up at him. minghao looks tired but oh so breathtaking. your hand places itself on his cheek, your thumb grazing over his soft skin as you take in the sight in front of you. your eyes rake over his body, covered by an oversized white shirt and some red checkered pajama pants. his eyes close slowly as he leans into your palm, seeking the warmth you always provide him.
you grab onto his face with both of your hands and bring him closer to you. “thank you for the mug, i didn’t realize before.”
a little smile displays itself on his face as he tilts his head, opening his eyes to look at you playfully. “what do you mean? i only did that because your mug was always in front of mine. your ugly mug hurts my eyes every time i try to make coffee.”
you scrunch your nose and slap his arm lightly in protest, making him laugh out loud, head thrown back as he snickers at his own joke.
he knows you don’t like it when he calls your mug ugly, –not that it isn’t ugly with all the weird colors and patterns decorating it– but because it was a gift from him.
seeing him laugh makes you smile and a small blush spreads on your cheeks. he pokes the side of your waist with his finger and cages you against the kitchen counter, his hand placing itself on your lower back seconds before it hits the edge of the counter.
you throw your arms around his neck, fingers fiddling with the hair on the nape of his neck. he sighs in delight, bending over again and almost putting all his weight on you as he hugs you tightly.
you wrap your arms over his shoulders, holding your boyfriend close to your chest. “tired my pretty boy?” you murmur.
he nods slowly, yawning as he does so.
you let out a little laugh, flicking his forehead. “let’s get you to bed then, i will join you after cleaning up, okay?”
minghao quickly shakes his head, mumbling something you can’t understand. you pull back to look at his face and he leans forward to kiss you. “i didn’t brush my teeth and just had coffee, silly!” you place a hand in front of his mouth and he pouts at you, biting it when you don’t let him kiss you. “minghaooo” you whine, dragging out his name.
he takes your hand in his and brings it up to his lips, kissing it softly where he bit you moments earlier.
“i don’t care about that, i need my morning kiss.”
you roll your eyes but drag him closer nonetheless, closing the distance between you two. minghao kisses you as if he hadn’t seen you in months. it takes your breath away.
he takes your breath away.
he pulls away after biting your lower lip with a chuckle, pecking your nose two times before ruffling your hair, making it even messier than it already was.
in less than a minute, he had cleaned your mug and the other stuff you had used to prepare your little toast, washing them all clean and letting them dry off next to the sink. he drags you back to the bedroom after making sure everything is cleaned up and the water boiler is turned off.
when he pushes you onto the bed and wraps you in the covers to trap you next to him, you can’t help but let out a laugh, smiling bashfully at his cute expression.
the bedroom window allows a ray of sunshine to enter the room and hit your and minghao’s feet that are peeking out from under the covers. you nuzzle closer to him and he closes his eyes with a satisfied smile when you suddenly let out a loud gasp.
before he can ask, you point at the window and let out a squeal. “look look! the neighbor got a cat!”
he grunts as he rolls over to take a look at the cat, squinting his eyes due to the sunlight. he moves around a bit when you continue to point out something, excitement taking over you. he begins to complain when he suddenly stills, spotting a white cat on the railing of the next-door neighbor’s balcony.
minghao’s deadpan expression catches you off guard when he turns to you. he raises his eyebrow but can’t do anything else except snicker when he sees your eyes wide open and peering up at him, a tiny smirk on your lips.
before you can defend yourself, he latches onto you, grabbing at your waist and keeping you pinned down to the mattress, peppering your face with kisses, lips sliding over your jaw and cheeks.
you yell out in joy, thrashing around the bed to escape his seemingly endless attack.
your boyfriend calms down quickly, allowing you to free yourself from his grip as he falls back onto the bed, head hitting the pillow and chest heaving.
you roll over on your side and lay your head on his chest, an arm sliding around his waist and a leg over his to nestle closer. he wraps an arm around your shoulder and pulls the cover over your upper body, keeping you warm.
you exchange some i love you’s and he kisses the top of your head softly, patting your hair a few times, indicating that it’s time to go to sleep. you close your eyes and push your face deeper in his white shirt, snuggling into him.
just before drifting off to sleep, you lean in not far from his ear, whispering in a drowsy way, “maybe we should get a cat.”
he rubs your shoulder a few times with his thumb, kissing your cheek one last time and smiling down at your almost sleeping figure. “yeah, maybe we should.”
