3. “Do I really have to spell it out for you? I love you! Are you happy now?”
'So here's the question--' Draco lifted the paint colour cards so they were next to each other - one of them was meant to be more blue-toned than the other, and Harry had absolutely no clue which one that was, '--do you love either of these?'
'Um.' Harry looked at the cafe at the end of the hardware store. He was pretty sure they sold chocolate milkshakes. 'I don't have super strong feelings towards paint colours.'
'But out of all the colours--' Draco swept a hand indicating the vast array of paint shades '--there must be one that, I don't know, ignites something in you?' He looked quite hopeful and Harry was, honestly, baffled.
'Er. Why does it matter what I think? It's your living room. Don't you think Pansy would probably be better suited to--'
'No!' Draco fairly yelled, and Harry flinched. 'Sorry. But it's your opinion I want.'
'Why?'
'Because!' Draco threw his arms in the air. 'I want to know! Is that such a crime? After all, you're going to be the one looking at it when I pin you against--'
'Jesus, Draco!' Harry looked around at the other shoppers who, mercifully, seemed not to notice. 'Um, I dunno, I like the lighter one?'
'You just like it?'
Harry really, really wanted one of those milkshakes.
'I told you, I don't really love paint colours--'
'No, you seem incapable of that particular emotion,' Draco snapped, and it occurred to Harry that...this may not be about the paint colours. Or the flower arrangements Draco had dragged him to view last week. Or the antique furniture collections he'd wanted his opinion on the week before that.
'Draco,' Harry raised an eyebrow.
'--of course,' Draco continued, pointedly ignoring Harry, '--you just might be incapable of loving some paint colours, ones with chequered pasts, even though those paint colours have loved you their whole lives, and really have changed as much as paint colours are able to--'
'Are you trying to get me to say--why do I have to say it first? Why don't you say it?'
'But then of course,' Draco continued, as if he hadn't heard him, 'perhaps the past six months between you and this shade of Iced Chiffon have meant nothing more than a bit of fun--'
'Draco!' Harry grabbed his shoulders, seeming to snap Draco out of whatever trance he was in. 'Do I really have to spell it out for you?'
'Yes!' Draco hissed. 'You really do, otherwise how am I meant to--pick paint colours, or flowers, or--'
'I love you! Are you happy now?'
Draco's mouth dropped open.
'You do?'
'Yes, you absolute lunatic. Can we go, please?'
'Oh, yes.' Draco blinked at the shelves. 'I suppose...the paint colours can wait.'
Harry held out his hand for Draco to take, and Draco stared it before tentatively interlacing their fingers.
'Harry?'
'Yes?'
'I love you too.'
Harry smiled at him, taking in the tousled hair and oversized sweater and nervous expression, and was hit with a wave of affection so strong it threatened to drown him.
'I know. Let's go get milkshakes.'
