❆ Prompt: The day Minato found Kakashi witnessing his father's death

Tw. Depressive thoughts & suicide

Minato knew there had to be something wrong. He glanced at his watch. His little prodigy was late to their training. Since the personal apprenticeship began almost a year ago, never did Kakashi miss his practice like this. Well, Minato understood that little Kakashi had a certain White Fang to impress after all. He chuckled at the cute thought before remembering the White Fang again.

It had been 5 months after the ill-fated mission. The first few months were the hardest for them. Fortunately, according to Kakashi, his dad seems to be better now and Minato also noticed that Kakashi's body language started relaxing slightly again these days. He took it as a good sign.

Focusing on the matter at hand, Minato extended his sensing perimeter to look for Kakashi's chakra. He frowned when he noticed Kakashi's chakra so dim and clamped to himself. At his own house, on top of that. He felt worried for a second. Were they attacked?, he thought.

He rushed to Kakashi's house and busted open the door. The house was dark and silent except for one study room that had its door halfway open. Light coming from the inside. There was no traces of enemy at all, so the Hatakes must be there.

"Kakashi? Sakumo-san?" Minato called out in the empty hallway, walking towards the only source of light. He still looked around warily in case there was an enemy he didn't realize.

No one answered him. Frowning, he continued walking to the study room. He slided the door open and dread immediately washed over him. His jaw gaped wide and the kunai he had clutched on his hand dropped with a clang.

Kakashi, 6 year-old Kakashi, was standing upon the bloody mess of his father's body. A pool of dried blood was staining the wooden floor, the smell of blood so strong in the air. Hatake Sakumo was lying on the floor, his mouth has lines of blood on the edges and a white tanto was sticking itself from his stomach. Even worse, Kakashi's clothes looked like it was also stained with blood.

"Kakashi!" Minato flashed to the boy and hugged the boy protectively to his chest, as if it would erase the memory of Sakumo's dead body from his mind.

He quickly summoned his toad and ordered it to notify the hospital and the Hokage. Judging from the dried blood, Sakumo had been dead for quite a few hours. Minato scrunched his nose to the metallic smell of blood.

"Kakashi, how long.. have you been here?" Minato looked at the boy before him. He couldn't imagine how being in a room with their father's dead body would feel like.

The boy didn't answer him at all. His eyes were blank and they were gazing downwards his own feet. Looking at Kakashi this close, Minato had just noticed the severe shaking on the boy's body, his hands and clothes with splatters of dried blood. Splatters. Minato froze. Hatake Sakumo didn't just commit suicide. He committed suicide right in front of his own son.

The medics came and Minato gave a quick report, intending to flash away from the bloody house with Kakashi asap. He flashed to his own house, surprising Kushina in the process.

He used the standard Konoha sign and informed Kushina of the whole thing. Kushina immediately moved to prepare a warm bath for Kakashi.

Meanwhile, Minato sat Kakashi down and crouched to his height. "Do you want.. to tell me what happened?"

Silence answered him. Minato waited. A few minutes went by and Kakashi's mask moved as if opening his mouth but nothing came out. Tick tock. Minato still waited. Kakashi opened his mouth again and with a small voice he spoke softly,

"It must have been nice to be dead."

Minato froze. His heart was shattered the moment he heard those words. He immediately cradled Kakashi's face with his hands and touched their foreheads together murmuring, "No, no, Kakashi. Don't ever think that. I'm here and Kushina's here. You-"

Minato gulped. He cannot trust his voice to not break that he even paused his sentence. He took a shaky deep breath and pursed his lips. He pulled the boy closer to him. Looks like all he can do for now is stay by Kakashi's side and he swears he intends to do just that, and no one can stop him. Not even the Hokage.

Hi! There's not a lot of dialogue here bcs this scene was just too painful for Kakashi to realistically talk, you know. I dare say this is one of the prompts I created that I'm proud of, I think. one of my personal favorites Hahaha :) btw picture not from tumblr and not mine!

What are your thoughts on this claim by some Sasuke Stans?

Is that Konoha or Kakashi??

Usually they would always blame Kakashi for this because he actively discouraged Sasuke from pursuing Revenge but volunteered himself for Shikmaru's Revenge. They literally call him an hypocrite. 

Anyways, Let me explain for both.

Sasuke revealing his life-goal of Killing a certain man (Read: Itachi) during Team 7 Introduction. Kakashi was kind of expecting it rather than opposing or discouraging it.

"In that case, You can never defeat Itachi"

During his Chidori Training, Kakashi was asking Sasuke to not give into Hatred or otherwise the Cursed Seal would flare up and due to that, his growth would be stunted. He doesn't seem to be discouraging Sasuke's revenge in this instance. In fact, he is actually guiding Sasuke.

"I was trying to honor this boy's feelings"

Here, Jiraiya (Just like Kakashi) seems to respect Sasuke's revenge and his valid feelings... So, he let Sasuke to fight Itachi (which ended up in a situation where Sasuke got hurt. For which Jiraiya regrets a lot).

"That's divine punishment! The destiny of someone who accomplished such evil deeds!"

Some random Konoha shinobis are grateful about the fact the Itachi got his punishment from his own little brother.

I don't think this Argument of "Konoha was unfair to Sasuke's revenge" holds any truth. In fact, everyone (Kakashi, Jiraiya, Villagers) were validating Sasuke's actions/feelings in a positive way. Until they don't. Well, to be specific.... Kakashi.

Keeping that aside for now (will come back to that later),

Let's look at Team 10's Revenge. Not going to explain much. Just few panels.

I think this is very self-explanatory.

Shikamaru lost his sensei. He devised a plan and a smart plan at that. He let Kakashi to act as Captain, then He got his Revenge. Over.

It's very simple.

Now, How did Sasuke conducted himself when Itachi came to the Village?

Firstly,

Firstly, he didn’t let anyone in his Revenge... Not Jiraiya... Not even Naruto. He was even being very dismissive about Tsunade’s help. As well as other Konoha Boys’ help.

Whereas Shikamaru was glad that Kakashi Joined them. 

Well, you could say, “Itachi must always be dealt by Sasuke alone... No one has any business in it. Whereas Kakashi, Shikamaru, Ino, Chouji were all related to Asuma in some way. Like they all have a stake in this Revenge and hence Shikamaru allowed everyone”.

If that’s the case, Why did Sasuke formed Team Hebi to achieve his Goal???? Instead, he could’ve killed Orochimaru and looked out for Itachi, Right???? 

So, Sasuke did know it inside him that he needed a 4-man cell to catch a strong opponent like Itachi. 

Secondly,

Sasuke after meeting Itachi, he straight up attacked him out of pure impulsiveness. There was no plan or tactics... On top of that, he doesn’t want help from any of them either. 

Whereas Shikamaru was explicitly mentioning to his teammates (including Kakashi) that they have to do the Simulation in their mind for atleast 3 times. So, there was already a clear and formulated plan that was laid out by Shikamaru. 

Why couldn’t Sasuke do that??? 

If Naruto acts on his impulse, it’s totally understandable... Because that was his inherent nature. But Sasuke???

During the Bell Test, Sasuke was so smart to observe Kakashi’s abilities first rather than straight up fighting head on like Naruto....

During Chunin Exams, Sasuke was so clever enough to create a lengthy password in order to draw in that Snake monster... 

Why didn’t Sasuke do the same here??? Like being clever, patient and take the help from other people... And then fight Itachi with a clear head????

Well, That’s why he formed Team Hebi 

Where is that calculative Sasuke who analyzes the enemy before plunging into the fight????

Oh, That’s why during Itachi vs Sasuke Battle, Sasuke was very calculative without letting his emotions get the better of him.

Anyways, the comparison (Shikamaru Vs Sasuke) I made above has nothing to do with why Kakashi discouraged Sasuke from pursuing Revenge... Because Kakashi was already knocked out by Itachi’s Tsukuyomi and hence, he weren’t there in that Kidnapping scene. 

I made this comparison to simply show that in Part 2, how Sasuke became level-headed in his battle with Itachi after got easily defeated by him once in Part 1. (Point to note: Sasuke also learnt how to overcome Itachi’s Tsukuyomi in Part 2 after receiving a cruel one in Part 1)

The Real Reason why Kakashi discouraged Sasuke from pursuing or obsessing with Revenge was 

1. Sasuke starting to Hurting Himself

Right after he pinned Sasuke to the tree, his first gaze was towards his Cursed seal.

Didn’t Kakashi advised Sasuke earlier that to not succumb into Hatred and not to depend on the power of the Cursed Seal???

Gaara taunted Sasuke with his Lack of Hatred

And he ended up succumbing into Hatred that led the cursed seal to flare up at the wrong time and rendered him immobile throughout the Battle. And the source of all this inconvenience was his Hatred and Revenge....  

This is exactly what Kakashi wanted to prevent from happening to Sasuke. To not let his student to get hurt and lose himself in Revenge. 

This is also the reason why Naruto confessed Sasuke about feeling Pain whenever Sasuke was hurting himself in Chapter 698.

Shikamaru never hurt himself for the sake of Avenging Asuma. Even Kakashi said that he was going with them to not let them do unreasonable things...

“This way, If I go with them, I can keep an eye on them... I won’t let them do anything unreasonable”

The other reason why Kakashi discouraged Sasuke was

2. Sasuke started to Hurt Others.

Naah, I am not talking about feelings getting hurt. 

This is about Sasuke physically starting to hurt other people in order to taste his Revenge. 

No matter how much you argue, Sasuke was the first one to instigate that Rivalry Battle in the Hospital Rooftop (not blaming him for doing it but that’s not the right way either) and he would’ve ended up doing something he regret for his whole life if he had his way... Out of sheer impulsiveness. 

Sasuke kidnapped Killer Bee.

Sasuke planned to Destroy Konoha.

Sasuke stabbed Karin.

Sasuke tried to kill Sakura by going behind her back while she was making up her resolve to kill him. 

Now all of these incidents are something Kakashi knew or saw from first hand. 

When his Target was just Itachi... He ended up attacking Naruto.

When his Target was just those 3 Elders... He ended up kidnapping Killer Bee, killing those Samurais, stabbed Karin and planned to destroy Konoha as a whole. 

In order to achieve his Goal, he is starting to inconvenience and hurt irrelevant people who don’t have anything to do with his Goal. 

Did Shikamaru hurt anyone for his Revenge???? 

Nope.

That’s why, Kakashi asked Sasuke to stop obsessing with Revenge. Because he is hurting himself as well as hurting other people.

Could all these have been avoided from Sasuke’s side???

Yes, Definitely.

Instead of planning to destroy the Entire Village, had Sasuke decided to confront and kill those Elders... Wouldn’t Kakashi/Konoha have helped him out??? 

I guess they would.

Here Kakashi was helping Naruto to beg forgiveness for Sasuke’s sake. Even though, Danzo, the Hokage had announced that Sasuke would be executed. He literally gave Jackshit about the fact that Sasuke killed Danzo.

This is what Tsunade feels about that 3 Advisors... Not going to explain any further. 

“The Mission Orders are still in effect, Right??”

“The Mission to Hunt down Akatsuki is still going on, Right?”

In both the scenes, Naruto and Shikamaru uses the Mission to Hunt Akatsuki as the reason to fulfill their Goal... In Naruto’s case, it was to bring Sasuke back. In Shikamaru’s case, it was to avenge Asuma. 

Don’t you think, had Sasuke stayed in the village... and if he had used the same ‘Akatsuki Hunting’ as the reasoning to pursue his Goal of killing Itachi using a bunch of Good Shinobi from the Village... Wouldn’t Tsunade have allowed it??? 

She would have. 

All the context of Kakashi, Tsunade or his Konoha 12 members helping out with Sasuke’s revenge is right there. It’s just that Sasuke was hell-bent on not taking it. Not only he started to reject/cut everyone but in the process he was starting to Hurt himself and Others... That’s why Sasuke’s revenge was discouraged whereas that’s not the case with Shikamaru.

You once said when Rin died on Kakashi's hand Obito's world was crushed, is it the same with Team 7 photo shattered in Naruto's mind when Sasuke has death warrant? Naruto and Obito's core are the same and both Rin and Sasuke are Naruto and Obito's loved one (hehe). If so, I think it's hypocrite for Naruto fandom to sympathize with Naruto on Kage Summit arc but deemed Obito as simp (although I also found many people mocked Naruto too for his panic attack). For them, their world was crushed the moment their lovers were gone so since I understand Naruto's desperation on Kage Summit arc I also understand Obito's desperation when Rin died.

Kind of Yes and No!!! 

Yes... For the way you compared Rin for Obito and Sasuke for Naruto... 

No.... For the comparison you made as to what Team 7 meant to Naruto than what Team Minato meant to Obito. And let me tell you why.

I would say Obito was more Honest, Loving and Caring person as a Team mate than Naruto ever was or will be. Because Naruto shows clear-cut favouritism towards Sasuke ALL THE TIMES. Which Obito would never ever do. 

For Example,

“I can’t waste time here... Wait for me... Kakashi... Rin!!! I am Alive!!!”

Here, Obito was equally thinking about both of his Team mates... And his desire from the bottom of his heart to reach out Kakashi and Rin as soon as possible. Look at the way he was dragging his body so hard.

And during his time when he was forcibly stuck with Madara in that cave, 

He was pushing beyond his limit to become stronger by thinking about his Entire Team and the happy days he spent with them. He could have easily thought about just Rin you know... But the presence of his whole team motivates him and gives him power.

Whereas this certain someone... **Ahem Ahem***

Naruto was also training here to become stronger just like Obito was in the previous panel... But Naruto singles out Sasuke’s name and pines softly.

Have you ever seen Naruto fondly thinking about Sakura not under the context of Sasuke???? 

Just once??? 

When he heard his teammates were in Danger, the very first question he asked was, “What’s Minato-Sensei Doing?! You know the Yellow Flash” And was frustrated with the fact that his Heroic Sensei was not there when he was really needed. 

And he straight up remembers Kakashi’s promise to him to protect Rin. Since He died without any regret because he believed Kakashi would protect Rin. Please look at the desperation Obito shows to save Rin and Kakashi... 

Now compare that with this...

Naruto clearly heard Kakashi’s words about Sakura being in danger because she is no match with Sasuke... But he just ignored that part about Sakura and went onto brainrot about Sasuke as if Sakura’s life means nothing. Whereas Kakashi as a Sensei, wanted to chase her and protect her from her eventual death. 

Man, If this were Obito, he would’ve chased Sakura the moment he heard about this. He wouldn’t be acting so complacent or lost in thoughts, you know. 

In their childhood, When Kakashi asked Obito to ignore Rin and to continue the mission... 

Obito punched Kakashi’s face...

When Sasuke acted on his self-defense and tried to kill Sakura... Naruto asked why did he do that since she was a Team 7 member and all... 

But few moments later..

I can’t even keep a straight face while attaching this picture... No explanation needed, Right??? Obito wouldn’t laugh like this, you know...

So, Obito’s entire identity and emotions revolve around his Entire Team... Of Course, Rin is Special... In a very obvious way. But Obito would never ignore Kakashi like Naruto ignored Sakura. Otherwise Obito wouldn’t have died protecting him by offering his Sharingan. It’s for this exact reason, I’ve claimed many times that Obito was a better Shonen type Protagonist than Naruto ever will be...

And that’s why When he saw Rin’s death with his very own eyes, he couldn’t believe that reality...

A reality where his Sensei whom he admired so much had Failed him... 

A Rival/Friend whom he finally befriended/respected also Failed him... 

He couldn’t accept any of these...

Obito could’ve easily killed Kakashi here. Or he could’ve easily snatched his eyeballs so that he could use it to perform Susanoo by himself or to perform many other interesting Jutsus... (Considering he had 100′s of Sharingan stock that he collected after Uchiha Clan Massacre...)... But he, clearly didn’t want to do any of that. 

Obito’s world was crashed... And he wanted to rebuild a new world with his treasured people in it. And His decision to build a Dream World majorly stems out of Rin’s loss... Yess... But also, the collective failure of his Team Members also played a part in it. If it was just for Rin... He would’ve slaughtered Kakashi into pieces right then and there..

Compared to that...

Naruto’s crash of his Team 7 was ONLY ATTRIBUTED TO SASUKE and SASUKE alone. Because right after this... 

Naruto ignored Sakura’s immediate life in danger but hyperventilated for Sasuke’s eventual Death in the Future... 

Naruto admitted that Iruka and Sasuke were his important people and that he was in Team 7 to chase him... to build a bond with him... Not Sakura or Kakashi

Naruto didn’t react strongly when Sasuke tried to kill his Team Mate and much later he gleefully said to Sasuke that... “I am really glad I met you”...

Obito could’ve easily just thought about Rin alone or he could have ignored the pieces of Minato and Kakashi... to prevent Juubi from taking over his mind. But he mended his entire Team back from the torn pieces to get his mind back... Which shows his Identity in this world.

The Point I am trying to make here is that Naruto’s attachment to this world was credited only to Iruka and Sasuke and... Sasuke just happened to end up in the same team as him and hence he thought about that Team 7 picture a lot.. Not to mention, he had immense respect on Kakashi too.

 Whereas Obito’s attachment to this world is attributed to Entire Team Minato with Rin as the Axis. Team Minato was more personal to Obito than Team 7 was to Naruto. 

What do you think of Rin and her dynamics with Kakashi and Obito?

There is this view that Rin’s only existence is to be a source of Trauma for Obito and have a crush on Kakashi... While Yeah, I agree with it if I just look at her profile alone.

But hey, Can we look sideward and ask ‘What’s the purpose of Iruka other than Acknowledging Naruto in Chapter 1, Worrying about Naruto during Chunin Exams, buying him Ramen here and there, Consoling him after Jiraiya’s death and advising him to come alive after fighting the War...???’ 

I totally summed up Iruka’s character in few lines which can be counted within our fingers. But somehow, I never saw anyone mocking Naruto for saying Iruka as his important person. I am pretty sure, if something happened to Iruka during the Pain Arc, Naruto would have gone Batshit Crazy. And He also went crazy after Orochimaru taunted him with Sasuke’s name. But if Obito does the same, it’s called ‘He was simping for a Girl & started a war for her who didn’t even love him back’. I just find this claim to be pretty sexist. 

[[Yeah, Yeah... I generously mock Sakura for simping over Sasuke who don’t even love her back. But Unlike Sasuke, Rin genuinely cared about Obito just as much as she did with Kakashi.. So, Obito having such strong feelings for her is understandable. But In Sakura case.... Ahem]]

With that being said,

Rin & Kakashi actually had no development or dynamics to be honest. At the very least, I saw her having a mild Crush on him and after Obito’s death, they just gave me some comrade vibes. And also, Even when everyone were alive, Still Rin was not rabidly chasing Kakashi to the point of tiring him out. I think it’s safe to say, she actually moved on from this crush business after Obito’s death. And from Kakashi’s side, he respected her as his Team Mate with no special feelings from his side.

However, when it comes to her dynamics with Obito though, It really gave me this childhood Best friend vibes.

When everyone in his Academy didn’t bother to care about him, Rin was the one who does these little things to acknowledge his existence. It’s almost like Rin saying, ‘I am here for you and I got this’.

To be honest, Fans are underestimating these little Gestures from Rin by passing it off as ‘Rin was just being nice with a Guy’. 

Well, At this point of the story (at 599th chapter), We have seen so many characters like Haku, Gaara, Kimimaro, Kabuto and finally Naruto who were all subjected to lot of sufferings and one of the major issue was Abandonment. Because they didn’t have anyone to say, ‘You are good, I need your presence...And I am here for you’. These are very simple but powerful words to which every abandoned characters crave for. Haku clearly said “Zabuza-san acknowledged me and that’s why I will do whatever he wants”. Same with Kabuto and Kimimaro. And we all know what happened with Naruto in that famous Chapter 1. 

Now tell me, how is Rin any different from Iruka in terms of acknowledging a person without expecting anything back????

Here, Obito is clearly saying that he wants Rin to stay by his side, watch over him and correct him if he makes any mistakes. [[Yes, Yes.... He also meant it in a romantic way]] 

As Obito expected....

Rin was really watching over him when Obito was doing something reckless. And it’s very clear from his expression that he was very glad to have someone at his side who can see what he was hiding (in this scene, he was hiding a wound he got while fighting). 

And this is Rin’s way of saying, ‘Don’t sulk in the corner like a Silly Kid... Show me how you’ll save the world. Let’s go’

Just like Iruka, Rin provides an acknowledgement and moral support to Obito whenever he feels down (Remember Iruka consoling Naruto after Jiraiya’s Death?). And that’s why For Obito, Rin became an important person because she did something which no one has ever did for him. Yeah, He also loved her romantically and he clearly knew that she likes Kakashi. But that doesn’t diminish him from not considering her as someone Precious. It’s like, “It’s Okay, Even if she doesn’t like me in ‘that way’. But I like her presence and She makes me Happy... That’s Enough”.

It’s actually these simple gestures plays an important role in many characters life in this series. For Naruto, Sasuke’s simple smile near that Lake Pier flashback gave him the resolve to continue living without feeling lonely. For Kabuto, Orochimaru’s acknowledgement mattered a lot at that time, no matter their twisted brains. 

And that’s why even during his dying moment, he said this...

And that’s why he couldn’t accept the reality of Rin dying before his Eyes. Also, he couldn’t accept the reality of Kakashi being a failure and his Great Sensei, Yellow Flash of Konoha being an absentee. 

When Naruto goes Feral on hearing a Boy’s name, it’s okay... But when Obito does the same, it’s called Simping, eh???? 

However, when it comes to Rin’s dynamics with her Team as a whole.... She is a person who connects both of her Teammates. Whenever Kakashi and Obito goes into some heated arguments, Rin was the one to say, ‘Enough... Both of you, Let’s go and work together’.

I do think that this is another intentional mockery of Sakura & Team 7 from the Author’s side. Because Rin really had an influence on both the teammates and it’s no denying that Kakashi & Obito, both will listen to her. 

Whereas, with Sakura

“Don’t Interfere with us!”

LOL.... Naruto, a boy who usually gets along with everyone and especially with Sakura, he takes all her bullshit without any complaints but when it comes to this... He puts her in her place in a rude manner. This is something Obito will never say to Rin, Not in his life.... that’s for sure. This is exactly why people love Team Minato despite giving off this ‘dysfunctional vibe’. 

I’ve seen comments like ‘Team Minato is totally bad because no one gained anything from it. Obito was dead because he sacrificed himself, Kakashi was traumatized by Obito’s death and Rin’s suicide, Minato was never there for them when they needed him the most and he died later... That’s why Obito going so far for this team is unjustifiable.’

Well, Just now I’ve provided all the panels about how Rin was a Precious Person for Obito on more than one occasions. Since he was also an Orphan, just like Naruto, He craves for acknowledgement and he got that from Rin. He got a Rival/Friend from Kakashi and he got his inspirational, heroic Sensei from Minato. But everything got crushed in front of his eyes on the day Rin died. Kakashi, a boy with whom he had an immense respect to the point of setting aside his ego and called him as ‘Captain’ failed to protect Rin. Minato, a hero with whom he revered had failed to be there when it mattered... It’s these failures he wanted to rectify through Mugen Tsukuyomi.

So Yes, Considering this story is not about Obito, we didn’t see much of Team Minato due to the lack of narrative time dedicated to it. While Rin doesn’t have a profound dynamics with Kakashi other than a mild crush, I clearly see Rin’s dynamics with Obito is very similar to Iruka + Sasuke’s dynamics with Naruto.

Do any you have any fanfic recs?

I have a very bad memory so there are so many fanfics that I enjoyed reading so much but unfortunately, I can't remember their titles. but here are some of my favorites, all of them are Kakashi centric tho, most of them are team 7 bonding wholesome stories and some of them has a Kakashi ship so I will mention the ship when there's one.
