HAVING FUN and ENJOYING the process of writing is so important. Whether you strive to work professionally or write just for the hell of it, remember why you started in the first place. It all comes down to love honestly

write for the audience you want, not the one you’re afraid of

You know. Reading is important. Because I'm like always trying to make every line I write this groundbreaking mindfucking art but like. A book is 90% just saying what happened. "I hugged him around the waist." "The chair was brown and overstuffed." "I woke up alone." Etc etc. Like normal ass lines. I just keep comparing my boring, necessary to set a scene lines, with famous authors' absolute best lines and like.... every line doesn't have to shatter the earth. Sometimes someone just sits in a chair and the lines that wreck you come later, one at a time, here and there. It's alright.

I love that writing feeling where a story starts going in a very different direction than the one you initially intended, but somehow this new direction actually achieves your desired goals way better than the original plan would have done.

There is no shame in starting over. Or not outlining. Or writing slowly. Or using clichés. Or writing multiple projects at the same time.

You are in charge of your own writing journey. It’s up to you which path to take, and none is less valuable than the other. You do you.

important writing reminders

execution matters more than something being cliché or overdone

it is also ok to write something that is utterly cliché or overdone

having a bad day of writing does not make you a bad writer

writing in your second or third language isn’t easy, you’re doing great. hell, writing in your first language is hard sometimes!

writing advice = tools. not rules. you are not meant to follow every rule or tip you read about. know the rules so you know which ones to break

every writer is capable of writing a captivating story, but your story might not be everyone’s cup of tea. and that’s ok. you will find your people

you don't have to excel at every genre. you can write something because you think it’s fun, or fascinating. it doesn't always have to be a matter of writing something only because you’re good at it. it's ok to explore different things (the world is your oyster, as they say)

My writing does not have to be “good”.

My writing does not have to be what anyone else wants to read.

My writing does not need to fit in the box Big Publishing wants to cram everything in.

My writing only needs to make me happy. That’s all. Nothing else.

getting back into writing recently with all my outlines and such, and just thinking about writing over 75K makes me not want to write, because i'm so nervous that i'll fail.

but if you're feeling the same, I just wanted to let you know:

you can do it. take it one scene at a time. fall in love with your characters, get excited for their developments and the next upcoming scene.

you can't edit a blank page.

and it's okay if writing is hard. sometimes being a writer isn't simply putting words on the page, but it's showing up to write anyways. because your brain is constantly working on that story in the back of your mind.

Remember, you will always be growing as a writer. There is no peak, only improvement. It’s a continual learning curve and you can only go up from here. So keep writing lovelies.

Write the story you want to write

It's ok if your story is predictable. Not every work of fiction needs to reinvent the wheel.

There's a reason that tropes exist, and it's because readers enjoy them and they make compelling stories. As long as the journey is fun, readers will come along for the ride.

Reminders for the Anxious/Depressed Creatives

You’re more than what you make.

Your productivity does not determine your value.

It’s okay to do nothing sometimes.

Not everything you do has to result in a product.

Not everything you make has to be important, significant, or even good.

You can make things just for yourself.

You can keep secrets for yourself, whether it’s not posting some of your projects or not sharing your techniques.

You’re allowed to say no.

You’re allowed to rest.

One thing about writing that might feel contradictory is that learning to write and figure out your personal style is not a linear process. Some days will be better than others. It’s a skill learned and earned. Writing is similar other art forms (and even sports!) in the sense that one day you’ll be hot shit but the next day you’re getting your ass kicked. That’s totally normal—don’t beat yourself up for feeling lost or stuck in a rut. Even plants start drooping once they start producing fruit.

And writing is an ongoing process! Throughout the entirety of your life, you will always be learning! Which means you will always be changing and experimenting! And what a wonderful thing that is :) Be kind to yourself even on the bad days. You’re right where you need to be.

STOP BEING SELF CONSCIOUS ABOUT YOUR CREATIONS STOP SECOND GUESSING WHAT YOU REALLY WANNA DO STOP DEBATING IT'S WORTH. LET YOUR ART SERVE YOU INSTEAD OF THE OTHER WAY AROUND

All i wish for 2024 is every creator to start that project they’ve been thinking about, write those fics they have been planning, make messy art, and to have as little burnout as possible.
