I knelt for a moment if only to become lost in prayer myself. It felt as if the gods were here, chatting and laughing. As if the gods were splashing in the clear water, sparking conversation with the priest tree and sharing wisdom from one ancient being to another.

Prayer calmed me; grounded me. My heartbeat was able to slow, and my thoughts had ceased whirring. I took a deep breath, thanking the gods for our fortune, for sparing my life, for keeping me alive. I prayed for guidance, asking the great Muse for her aid in knowledge, the princess for her wisdom, and the Forgiving One. I ask the Forgiving one the same I had for years, for another chance at morality. For the freedom of those whose lives I'd ended. For the opportunity to fight for freedom or justice instead of sport.

I heard movement in the woods. It felt like something was staring at me. I whipped around, unsheathing my knife. I felt eyes staring at me, black and empty.

As quickly as it arrived, it had gone.
