Excerpt:
“Please, Violet! I need you! Please!” Powder cries out, and Vi stops moving.
She clenches her fists and closes her eyes, letting her head hang down.
She’s tired and hurt and terrified and devastated and infuriated and just so many things at the same time, that she can barely stay on her feet to stagger away with Vander’s last words echoing in her head, and she knows that Powder still needs her, that she needs to be strong, that she can’t leave her.
Powder is sobbing and yelling, terrified out of her mind that Vi is going to leave her as well, and Vi tries to find the will to walk a few steps away to just lean her back against a wall and just breathe for a second before she has to deal with Powder, but Powder yells and yells and yells, and every single sound tears at Vi’s determination until she can’t.
She turns around and drops to her knees beside Powder’s shaking form, sitting back on her heels as she places her hand on top of Powder’s head.
Powder stops yelling and flinches, quickly sitting back on her heels as she looks to see who touched her.
The tears are still running down her cheeks, snot running down her chin, mixing with the rain that started pouring down sometime while Vi was just standing there.
There is a red mark on her cheek, the imprint of Vi’s own hand, and when Vi reaches out, Powder flinches back momentarily and Vi feels her heart shatter inside of her chest.
She moves her hand back and curls her fingers together into a fist, dropping her hand to her lap.
She feels more tears falling from her eyes as Powder just watches her, chest moving too fast with how hard she’s breathing.
“Powder, I’m so sorry, so so sorry,” she says, looking down at her hands and trying very hard not to lose it. “I didn’t mean it. You’re not a jinx! I don’t know why I even-”
Before she can finish, Powder is crashing into her, wrapping her arms tightly around her shoulders and pushing the side of her head hard against Vi’s.
She’s crying again, but these sobs are less desperate and more relieved.
Vi puts her arms around her automatically, holding her close and rocking them both from side to side, repeating that she’s sorry over and over again.
She pushes back the utter despair she feels at the fact that most of her family is dead, and concentrates all of her attention on the girl still in her arms, on the fact that they’re both still alive, on how that matters much more than anything else. She holds on to Powder tighter, and Powder tightens her grip around her neck.
She doesn’t realize that they’re not alone until Powder gasps.
Vi pushes her backwards a little as Powder gets up to her feet and she spins around on her knees before getting up to her feet.
She staggers backwards a little, and feels Powder’s hands against her back.
She recognizes the guy as one of the Enforcers that had come with Grayson, the one whose name was in the tube that Vi had stolen from Vander, the one that Silco had given a bag of gold to.
He’s carrying a rag in one hand and a determined expression.
“You called us down here to turn yourself in, and I’m not leaving without you,” he says. “There’s too much at stake.”
Vi shakes her head and steps back. Powder moves with her, fingers tightening in the back of her shirt.
“I can’t-” she starts, trying to think fast. She’d been so sure turning herself in had been the right decision earlier, but that was when she knew that Powder was going to be okay, that Vander was going to be there, and he would protect her no matter what. But she didn’t want to think what would happen to Powder now if she let the Enforcer take her.
He doesn’t give her much time to speak, darting forward, one hand outstretched. Vi tries to punch him in the face, but she’s tired, and her arms ache and the punch is sloppy.
He blocks it, and grabs on to her arm pulling her away from Powder in one sharp tug.
Powder screams and Vi can feel her against her side as she tries to pull Vi away from the Enforcer.
The man pushes Powder back, hard enough that she lands a couple of feet away, and Vi pulls out of his grip and punches him on the jaw with the heel of her hand, making his head snap to the side and the rest of him follows as he stumbles and almost falls to the floor.
Vi goes to make her way towards Powder, and then she feels hands wrapping around her biceps, tugging her backwards. Vi kicks out with her feet, trying to pitch her weight forward as the Enforcer tugs back harshly.
Powder gets up and is about to run at them when a cold and calm voice sounds out, stilling the three of them.
“I think that’s enough.”
