Been thinking about the Drifting Stars au lately, and randomly came to think about how in a lot of those stories Dipper stays in Gravity Falls to help Stan with the portal. But then, why don't Dipper and Mabel's parents demand their kids back? Why don't they become suspicious when they haven't heard from their daughter for months?
What if they don't question it because they did get their kids back (as far as they know).
There's two Dipper clones still alive.
They share the original Dipper's thoughts and feelings, they have the same memories, they care about the same people. They care about Mabel. They're willing to do anything to save her, just like the original Dipper. They go back to Piedmont in the twins' place so Dipper can stay and work on bringing Mabel home.

Drew some more drifting stars au fanart now that I’m getting mildly better at drawing people. I’m just obsessed with the idea of it. Might also try to draw some Dipper & Stan trying to fix the portal. We’ll see.
And yea, I put her in a new sweater and some shorts. Figure she’d keep making sweaters if she could, that would calm her down, and maybe black was the only/best color yarn she could find, or maybe Ford had some cool black sturdy material that she made it from so that it won’t tear like her other one did, maybe this is more protective, I don’t know. And short because she’s likely to be running a lot, or at least walking, and I expect that’ll be easier in shorts than in a skirt. And she’s got some sort of gadget, I dunno, she was bored.

Since we’ve all been getting our gravity falls obsessions back (and since my last drifting stars au art is one of my posts that keeps slowly getting new notes??) I thought I’d try again and make some Mabel Design Choices™. I really liked the black sweater idea, but now I gave her shooting star hair clips! So here’s a colored version and some sketches. I haven’t perfectly nailed it (and I forgot to make Ford’s jacket exist behind him) but it’s pretty solid.
I think without even realizing it, Ford would grow endeared and attached to her pretty quickly. I also think, besides the trauma of it all, Mabel would do pretty dang well wandering the multiverse.
Mabel was and always will be a leash baby.
Ford probably is too.
I’ve had this comic sitting in my brain for ages but drawing comics kinda scare me so I’ve been putting it off.
If you can’t tell it’s based off of the first drifting stars headcannons post by @x-i-l-verify that was way back in 2016, back when my target audience still existed.
I dunno if I'm gonna turn this into a series or not, I don't really have much more content to go off of soooooo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
