I know the Oscars love to nominate certain actors just for the hell of it even though the actor knows he/she won't win. Denzel is one of those actors.
As for Joseph? Depending on his performance and how well received it is, he might be the one the producers will end up pushing for during awards season. Who knows?
In interviews when Gladiator 2 is mentioned he always says he’s very nervous about it. He’s likely to have been asked to go VERY BIG with the performance (hence the nervousness) which will probably divide the critics.
I’m hanging my hat on the comments made by a guy who saw the film a few months ago. He said on Reddit that Joseph gave a very nuanced performance (the guy mentioned Heath Ledger/Joker ) and that he did brilliantly in his very disturbing death scene. He actually thought Joseph would get an Oscar nomination but obviously Denzel will be getting all the push from the producers so I don’t see that happening.

Can't wait to see Gladiator 2 drop its trailer. They previewed a 5-minute clip to media and people already went nuts. Pedro Pascal, Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn and Denzel Washington in the same movie - let that sink in!! Just the sheer amount of testosterone and manliness and beauty
