"Ky? Baby girl are you up?"
Chan leaned against the door of his fourteen year old daughter's bedroom. He listened for any sign of acknowledgement; he was sure he could hear her turn over, and he knew she was awake.
He smiled. She was just like him; neither of them had any intention of waking up in the morning. On the brink of consciousness, nothing seemed to matter to either of them apart from getting more sleep.
He knocked quietly against the door. "Can I come in, princess?"
A pause, and then, "Yeah."
Chan gently pushed the door open. Even though Sky was awake, Chan didn't want to disturb her. He was as quiet as possible as he padded into the room, shutting the door behind him.
It was dark inside the room; the blinds over the window blocked out any possible sliver of light, and Chan rubbed his eyes as his gaze adjusted to the darkness.
"Can I open the blinds a little, baby?" He asked.
"Mhm … "
Smiling, Chan opened the blinds just enough so that streams of daylight could spill through. It lightened the room considerably and Chan blinked hard before making his way to his daughter's bed. He sat down on the edge and reached out, his fingers combing away Sky's unruly hair.
"Can't get up today, huh?" Chan mused. "Did you sleep much?"
Sky shuffled around. She turned completely so she was facing her father, her eyes so much like his slitted into sleepy little moons.
"I did," she hummed. Then she frowned, wriggling further down into her duvet. "I … I don't want to go to school, daddy."
Chan raised his eyebrows. He cupped Sky's cheek and she automatically leaned closer to him, seeking the comfort of his warmth.
"Why not, baby? Are you sick?"
She shook her head. "Just don't want to go."
She suddenly avoided her father's gaze; she stared straight in front of her instead, and Chan frowned when he saw the way her eyebrows furrowed together.
He smiled softly. He had a feeling there was something she wasn't telling him.
Chan patted her shoulder and leaned down to kiss her cheek. "Okay. I'll tell your mother. You get some more rest … come out whenever you're ready, okay?"
Sky nodded. She kissed his hand and watched as her father got up to leave the room. He reached the door when he turned back and hastily closed the blinds again. With a cheeky grin, Chan turned to leave again, shutting the door quietly as he went.
Once Chan had left, Sky sat up in her bed. The bedsheets fell around her waist as she dropped her face into her hands, her shoulders sagging with her large exhale.
She kicked her bedsheets in frustration before sliding out of bed. Her backpack was strewn in the corner and she scowled as she made eye contact with it; it was as though she could see the hateful papers through the fabric, the harsh words scrawled on them burning like fire.
Once she had brushed her teeth, Sky trudged out of her bedroom. She made her way down the stairs and into the main room where her parents were sitting at the breakfast bar; their faces were glowing as the sunshine spilled through the French doors, and Sky couldn't help but sigh again.
She wondered if perhaps she should go back to bed. She didn't want to bother them … not when they looked so happy.
But Y/N spotted her over Chan's shoulder; her eyes lit up as her face broke into a smile, and Y/N beckoned her daughter over to them both.
"Good morning baby," Y/N immediately kissed Sky's cheek and hugged her tightly; it was nothing out of the ordinary - they always hugged every morning. But for some reason, the gesture made Sky's eyes prickle with tears, and she was unable to hide them as she pulled away.
Y/N's face bloomed into an expression of worry. "Sky? Darling, what's the matter?"
Her soft tones combined with the twinning worry in her father's eyes made her break. She burst into tears there and then, the weeks of pent-up frustration and hurt spilling out of her like a waterfall.
Alarmed, Y/N stole a glance at her husband. He looked equally as confused as she felt; the both of them moved so they could hug Sky together, their arms sliding around her as they held her close. Their hands patted her back, and Chan kissed his daughter's tears away, leaving her with bright red cheeks and wide eyes.
"I hate people," Sky whispered as soon as she had stopped crying. She rubbed her eyes in agitation, suddenly annoyed that she had burst into tears over something so stupid.
Even if it did hurt.
"Yeah, me too," Y/N muttered at that; Chan looked at her with an amused expression and she shrugged, throwing her hands up as an explanation. "Why do you hate people, Ky?"
Sky huffed. "They're mean."
Chan frowned at that. "Has someone been saying mean things to you, kiddo?"
"Maybe," Sky said slowly. "Well … it's complicated. It's not like they're saying it to my face."
"What do you mean, baby girl?"
Sky looked uneasy. She looked down at the fluffy frog slippers on her feet, their goofy expressions staring back at her.
Chan's face softened. He gently patted her cheek, his own cheek dumpling with a smile. "You know you can tell us anything, right?"
Sky nodded. "I know."
She sank down onto one of the stools at the counter. Folding her arms under her chin, Sky kicked her legs around in the air.
"People keep leaving notes in my locker," Sky said. "I don't know how many people … but there's different handwriting on them."
"What do the notes say, darling?" Y/N prompted her softly.
Sky looked down. She shrugged. "Loads of stuff. That I'm ugly, that I'm fat, that no one likes me … I didn't really care about them at first but I started getting so many. And then … and then people started saying horrible things about you two … "
Chan blinked. Y/N stared.
"About us?" She asked.
Sky nodded. "Stuff like you're terrible parents and you should have made me a better person or something."
"Okay," Chan said calmly; Sky looked at him and was suddenly taken aback. Fire seemed to burn in his eyes and it was a strange sight to see considering how his voice was still the same as always. "Who are these kids? I think I'm going to have to teach them a lesson … who do they think they are? How dare they call my precious princess fat and ugly?"
Y/N laid a calm hand on the man's shoulder, and he immediately piped down. Sky was sure she could almost hear a sizzle; the sort of sizzle that could be heard when water touches a flame, immediately putting it out.
She almost snorted with laughter. It was a comical sight.
"You're not fat, darling, and you're not ugly either," Y/N said to her daughter. "You're very beautiful. I bet you anything, those … people, who are leaving these notes for you are just jealous. I mean, come on … they're not even telling you to your face. They're hiding behind pieces of paper - they're cowards, darling, don't take any notice of them."
Sky smiled at that. "I try not to. But it's … hard."
"That it is," Chan suddenly said. He smiled wistfully, rubbing the nape of his neck. "I actually went through something similar a while ago."
Sky cocked her head to the side. "You did?"
Chan nodded. "Back when I was an idol."
Sky suddenly grinned. Her father seemed to have a life lesson tucked up his sleeve for everything her and her brother went through, and they were always linked to his old job. Sky secretly loved his stories more than anything; her father's stories always made her feel proud of her struggles. She loved her father more than anything … she was honoured to go through things similar to what he had, it made her feel as though she was more like him. And it made her feel like she wasn't alone.
"What happened?" She asked him.
She expected him to answer; but Y/N replied, and it was with a passion that took Sky by surprise.
"Your father was the nicest man out there," Y/N said, laying a hand on Chan's shoulder. "I mean, of course he still is. But back then he worked his butt off trying to help people and be there for them … he was understanding, and polite, and respectful, and no matter what anyone said to him, he was kind. He was always kind. He used to give everything to people online and around him … he did everything for everyone and people still sent him so much hate."
Chan flushed; he didn't think he'd ever get used to the way his wife spoke about him. He felt incredibly shy all of a sudden, and he distracted himself by reaching for her forgotten mug of tea.
Sky frowned. "But … why?"
"Because that's just how the world works," Y/N said in a gentler tone. "You can be the loveliest person to ever exist, and people will still find a reason to pick on you. You can be the most beautiful person and people will still find a way to call you ugly. Some people are just hurting and hate themselves so much that instead of fixing that part of them, they project their insecurities and their hatefulness on others."
Suddenly exasperated as she thought about the vile nature of the world, Y/N kneeled down infront of her daughter. She took both of Sky's hands in her own and looked up at her.
"Listen to me, my darling. You're a good person, aren't you?"
Sky nodded. "I try to be."
"Good girl. You know your own core values, and you know who you are as a person, right? You're a beautiful person, Sky … don't let other people who hide behind paper and screens tell you things about yourself. They don't know you, darling. They don't know anything about you, or us … they don't know anything. They're probably just very unhappy people who are jealous of how brightly you shine. Don't let people like that convince you you're someone you're not. Okay?"
Sky nodded, tearing up again as she looked at her mother. Y/N leaned up and kissed the girl's forehead, her hands going to cup her cheeks. "You mean the world to me and your father, and your brother. Don't forget that, okay?"
"Okay," Sky whispered, nodding as she sniffed aggressively. The sound made her father chuckle, and the man leaned across and kissed her cheek as he secretly blinked away tears that had begun to pool in his own eyes.
"What have you done with all those notes, baby?" Chan asked her.
Sky smiled sheepishly. "They're in my bag."
Tutting, Chan folded his arms across his chest. "I hope you weren't planning on keeping them."
Clocking the expression on his daughter's face, Chan sighed and shook his head. "Baby girl, if you keep them, you'll be tempted to read them again. If you read them again you're just going to overthink and you'll believe what they say, hmm? Just get rid of them … if you get anymore in your locker, don't even read them. Just throw them away. Those people don't deserve your attention … just throw it all away, okay?"
Suddenly giggling, Sky gave her parents a mischievous grin. "What if I film myself burning them and then post it on my socials? Then that way they'll know I don't care."
Chan couldn't help but chuckle at the idea. Y/N, on the other hand, shook her head.
"Yeah … maybe don't do that, darling," Y/N smiled. "Because if you do that, they might think you care too much by posting it."
"Maybe you're right," Sky slumped back into her seat again.
"Just throw them away baby," Chan grinned. Then he raised his eyebrows, looking at her curiously. "Is this why you didn't want to go to school?"
" … maybe."
Feeling dramatic all of a sudden, Chan leaned forward and scooped his daughter into his arms. He squeezed her tightly and dropped a flurry of kisses all over her head, making her giggle and kick out as she tried to escape his loving grip.
"My poor baby," Chan whined, rubbing his nose against her cheek; he knew exactly how much he was embarrassing her daughter, and he relished every single bit of it.
Sky sighed. She couldn't stop the smile that was growing on her face, nor could she untangle herself from his arms. He sagged into his embrace and let him cuddle the momentary sadness out of her.
