Consent Hairdresser - Tumblr Posts
My experience with hair dressers made me think about consent in non-sexual situations.
I always have the same problem with hairdresser appointments: The blow drying. I always ask to do it myself, but few hair dressers allow it. So I always say: "Just drying. No styling." I just hate the experience of hair styling with a blow dryer. The heat, the pulling and groping of my hair. It's awful to me, because due to trauma I have a problem with touch anyway.
Every hairdresser ignores my request. Literally everyone. I have curly hair and every hair dresser either smoothes the curls out or enhances them which means 15 Minutes of torture and a style that isn't me. When I complain they don't get it. It's always "You don’t want straight, you don’t want curly. What do you want?" And I always say "Dry hair. Just dry hair and respecting my wishes."
They don't get it. They say they didn’t charge extra for the styling and I try in vain to explain that it isn't about money, but about choices concerning my body.
Does the hairdresser's sence of aesthetic weight out my right to choose what happens to my body?
Why do people in 21th century where consent is a big topic don't realize that this doesn't only apply to sex?
