I like to think that Itachi at some point told Kisame the truth. After all the stops they probably had to make to check on Sasuke or Itachi’s refusual to ever finish him off, I think it’d become clear that something was up since Kisame can smell a lie from a mile away.

Also Itachi deserves someone to confide in so...yeah.
