Box Turtle - Tumblr Posts
San Antonio Zoo recently hosted a Zoo Camp for grownups, and I got to go!!!
It was VERY cool!
we got to go behind the scenes into the animal nutrition building and hear about all the varied diets and see the pantry and fridge and freezer.
we got to look in all the workshops. Paint shop, mechanic, wood and metal shops, etc.
We got to ask whatever questions we wanted, and our guides told us a ton of fun stories about the various animals we passed.
We got to see one of the education animals paint! Fancy the Ornate Box Turtle.

They even gave us a small piece of her painting as a gift at the end of the day!

Oh, that sounds fun! Like a whole day, instead of just a short backstage experience?
San Antonio does some fun events and fundraising ideas. Not all of them are to my taste, but they’re certainly good at drumming up novel ways to raise guest engagement. And some of them, like this, are things I’d totally do.
Among many things you didn’t expect you would obtain after getting into pest control: An intense fear/love relationship with box turtles
Lemme explain, box turtles are neat. They’re beautiful, they’re cute, often times it would be the highlight of my shift to come across one of them. Thing is, you had to move them away from the areas to be treated if you spotted one, because nobody wins when you blast some innocent reptile in the face with insecticides. Nothing particularly dangerous for them at the levels of exposure I’m talking about, but probably very irritating and uncomfortable, especially in the eyes. As with all animals except the target you do your best to minimize accidental contact and check your surroundings well. Unfortunately, their natural camouflage works REALLY well in fallen leaves, and way more times than I would have liked, I wouldn’t even see them until I was basically about to step on it. Basically anytime I would miss one during the initial scan and then notice it later in the middle of a treatment, it would be a whole jumpscare experience. At one point, I was even lucky enough to find the remains of one- a mostly cleaned, completely intact shell. Still have it preserved in my room now. Those funky little guys were one of my favorite things about that gig. Hope you can tell why.

A little live action comic I whipped up while waiting to clock out of work. If you can't read it, here it goes.
Splinter: BOOOYYYYSSS!
Raph: Leo!
Leo: It wasn't me!
Donnie: I feel so uncomfortable...
Mikey: Don't worry, we'll figure this out. Right, Dad? Dad?
Big Mama: *Drags Splinter away* My huggy-poo!
Splinter: HELP!
