the problem with the blue curtains meme that I haven't seen anyone talk about is that most people are debating authorial intent, critical media literacy, etc. but like. the number one reason that anyone agrees with this meme is that the curriculum and education system is just about "this interpretation will get you marks so just shut up and write it" instead of "this interpretation is one of many interpretations and we can have a fruitful discussion about this in class"
at least in the UK, and up to GCSE level, the exam boards basically decide which opinions matter and which don't. yes, you could theoretically write in your essay that "the curtains being blue are unimportant" and justify that statement fully, but the fact of the matter is you are more likely to receive more marks if you write down what "sounds" more qualified to the exam board in the moment. it's the same reason that memes like "mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" are popular, except we don't give it as much flak because it's based on a fact, not an opinion (although I'd argue "powerhouse" isn't objective, but whatever)
and because the teacher's job is to make you succeed in the exam, despite how much they might want to give you a good extracurricular lesson on media criticism and analysis, they will just continue regurgitating, with very little leeway for personal interpretation, exactly what the board recommends the students are taught.
and this Pascal's wager of literary analysis is exactly why memes like this get made, and also why many people continue thinking well into adulthood that all media should only be taken at face value. I don't know from personal experience, but I'm sure that most English teachers would prefer to have relaxed conversations about why the curtains are described to be blue, but in most cases they really can't. and unfortunately, a lot people don't grow out of the critical skills they believed would help them at age 16, so we're stuck with proponents of the meme and what it represents.

English Teachers now: “the curtains are never just blue. Everything in the story was made up, the color is described for a reason”.
English teachers in 2030: “The gator never just breakdances. Everything in the story was made up, the breakdance scene exists for a reason”.
