Hello! I was inspired by the always amazing @possum-quesadilla to write some details, background stuff, and other little notes for my harpy Beetlejuice fanfiction, Birds of a Feather. This is just chapter one for now.

Chapter One- Feathered Finds

“It had what was either a scraggly beard or lichen on its face. Maybe both?”

Beej has plant life growing on his body! He could be his own little forest if he wanted to.

“My name is Shilo. I study cryptids and monsters. Ever since I found out that a harpy lived in the deepest part of these woods eight years ago, I dedicated my life to finding it! Yes, I moved to the woods and built my own house here, and yes, all my friends and family think I’m crazy, and yes, they tried to get me diagnosed with something, but it’s all been worth it! I knew you were real! Oh, what’s your name by the way?”

Fun fact: Shilo is autistic and has ADHD! She is also a big infodumper. She either talks to herself a bit, doesn’t talk for three days straight, or never stops talking. She’s just like me fr.

“And to answer your other questions, first, because when I get focused on a project, I get focused, and I’ve been interested in cryptids and monsters my whole life.”

“Shilo wanted to fight back, wanted to argue that she didn’t wait this long searching for him just to not be able to publish her findings,”

By “publishing her findings”, Shilo was really planning on screaming about Beej on Reddit. I love this nerdy mad scientist loser girl <3333

“Before she could change her mind, Shilo wrapped her arms as far as she could around the harpy. He smelled of roadkill and pine sap. His soft chest feathers tickled her nose and she held her breath as his body stiffened.”

Is it a good idea to hug a large forest bird monster that you’ve just met? Probably not. Not that Shilo cares. 

“You, my feathered friend, are a whopping seven feet and two inches tall!”

He’s a tall boy!! Even larger than the average male harpy (based on my slightly modified version of the species at least)! I wonder if there’s a reason behind that…

“Yeah? What, is parrot Shilo comin’ back again? If she is, you should dress the part. You’d look good in a bit of color.” He gestured to her current attire, a long sleeved black undershirt, ratty lab coat that looked older than time itself, and some black pants, stained with grass and grime”

All of her clothes are either stained or dirty. This girl is Not Good at keeping up with laundry.

“I dunno about immortal, ‘cause my mom definitely wasn’t. I guess I just have a long life span? I never really questioned it.”

…

“Wow!” Shilo stretched the word out, speaking a few octaves higher than normal. “That’s… such an interesting answer!” Beetlejuice didn’t seem to see her discomfort.”

Shilo isn’t amazing at picking up social skills, but Beetlejuice is worse.

“It was populated with tables, corkboards, and journals. So. Many. Journals.”

She has around 50-ish journals. She’s written in about 34. She’s actually completed about 10.

“He kept roaming the lab, sniffing at books, tables, and walls. From upstairs, he could hear the quiet clattering of what he assumed were pots and pans. He crawled onto the mattress and inhaled deeply. It smelled like her. Sweat, earth, and something vaguely floral. He liked that. He nuzzled against her pillow a bit,”

Sensory input is incredibly important to him, especially scents and sounds! He’s got a very sensitive nose and ears.

“SALMON!!!” Beetlejuice leapt up from his spot on the floor and lunged for Shilo. In his rush, he bit down on both the salmon and the plate, narrowly avoiding Shilo’s finger.”

Poor guy was starving :(

“He tried to sit down the way Shilo did, but his wings got in the way. After a bit of struggling, he stood up, made a low growling sound in the back of his throat, then kicked the chair over in a rage, sending it flying.”

When you try to fit in with your new friend but you’ve got two heavy duty feather dusters permanently strapped to your back.

“He jerked his head up, face smeared red with raspberry carnage.”

I picture him looking like a baby eating cake for the first time. 

“A soft purring sound emitted from him as he dozed off again. Shilo made a mental note to write about that as she ran her fingers through his crest of hair, eventually joining him in slumberland.”

Despite being half bird, Beetlejuice purrs like a cat!! His feathers and hair are also very soft and fluffy! 

Should my AU where Beetlejuice possesses the dead body of someone Lydia knew and they have to sleuth out what actually happened to him together be called…

- The lyrics for this chapter’s title is from “Never Love An Anchor” by The Crane Wives.

- “The next ten months moved at the speed of a dream.” - A call back to a line from Time is a Flat Circle, which itself is a reference to “Asteroid City”! Gotcha again!

- “They read ‘Flowers for Algernon’, ‘An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge’, and… some sort of Jane Austen novels.” - I wonder if those stories are thematically relevant to this chapter?

- “He had no idea what to do about his fur anyhow. It had never grown in that long and thick before, how was he supposed to know it would do that?” - It was growing properly because he was finally happy and healthy enough for it to do so!

- “She was tall. Well, at least taller than him. Damnit.” - Bela is 5’9”! She is on the shorter side for demons. Beej is just especially small, since he was malnourished.

- “Her roots were black, the rest of her hair cascaded down to her shoulders in similar curls to his own, colored with a gentle lavender hue.” - Bela’s resting hair color is purple instead of green like Beej!

- “She had an orange-jeweled nose ring.” - Bela and Deb have matching nose rings, since exchanging jewelry is how demons court each other!

- “Shades of a gentle maroon red flickered through Bela’s hair.” - Bela has different colors for her emotions than Beej does!

- “Most were “whales”, stolen away in malevolent Deals to forever be a supply for the demon they were tied to. Slowly withering away to nothing.” - this is inspired by “Doctor Sleep”, because I’m a huge Mike Flanagan fiend.

- “They were all strange, all lacked the innate ability to socially adapt that the other demons thrived off of.” - Autism can run in a family, and it sure does run in the Shoggoth family!

- “He didn’t know why she was upset, but he knew it was up to him to make it better. (Why else was he here?)” - Still partially believes his only purpose is to make others happy, or they wouldn’t want him around.

- “… she hesitated, still firmly grasping the bright green fleece blanket he’d summoned from his room around her shoulders.” - The same blanket Charles got Beej for his room!

- “ “I watched this movie last night, since I couldn’t fall asleep. It was..” their voice caught in their throat, and their breath hitched. Beetlejuice slowly rose from his chair, setting the ice pack on the counter. “… lotta.. big feelings about it, huh?” They rapidly nodded, wrapping their arms around themself. “I don’t… I can’t keep living the way I do.” ” - Ash watched “I Saw The TV Glow”, which is a horror movie about being trans. It gutted me the first time I saw it. Ash had a similar visceral reaction, and it made her rethink how she is living. It also informs a lot of this chapter’s theming, but it is not required viewing for this fic. It is very, very difficult to watch for neurodivergent queers.

- “The living need attention too, Ash. It’s okay.” - This line is partially taken from “Dead Girls” by Penelope Scott, which is a very important song on Ash’s playlist.

- “You feel like you’ll die if you stay there. Or… worse.” - An “I Saw The TV Glow” reference. There’s quite a few in here.

- “Thank you, Beetlejuice.” - the first time they’ve called him by his actual name!

- Anyone spot more Time is a Flat Circle parallels?

- “It was then that Beetlejuice got hit by his first car.” - This is mostly a joke about how I, the author, have been hit by 4 cars. I feel like Beej would be similarly unlucky.

- “… it’s like being a wolf dog.” - This is based on how I’ve explained what it was like to grow up in my household.

- “Memories washed away like chalk on the sidewalk.” - Another “I Saw The TV Glow” reference.

- “Adam and Barbara celebrated their birthdays, which landed a couple days apart from each other, by smelling wine and watching ‘Lord of the Rings’ together. Beetlejuice was invited to join them.” - Based on something Adam made Beej he would promise to do in an earlier chapter!

- “June was full of beautiful sunsets he watched with his family.” - This was, like the previous thing, also listed among the reasons Beej should keep “living” in a previous chapter.

- “At the end of the month, walking to school and the store with Lydia, Beetlejuice realized with horror that Lydia was taller than him. Like, at least half a foot taller.” - Lydia is 5’7” now, he’s just being dramatic.

- “(How could no one see it? He felt so happy, but still he felt pieces of him slowly dying and rotting away. How could no one see that he was rotten? That he was dying?)” - This is partially another “I Saw The TV Glow” reference, and a reference to the ending of the song “you smell of dead flowers” by vslush and cliesel

- “August came like a thief in the night.” - A callback to Time is a Flat Circle! Which is itself an Edgar Allen Poe reference.

- “… they say old man Hirsch signed up for it right before he went missing.” - Yes he is named after Alex Hirsch, creator of “Gravity Falls”. Love ya Alex!

- “ “I managed to talk him down from another viewing of ‘Pride and Prejudice’!” (Another? What was that? They’d seen it before?)” - This is meant to alert the reader that something is very wrong, as “Pride and Prejudice” was brought up before by Beetlejuice himself.

- “Beetlejuice scratched at their left arm. The scars had started to fade.” - He was resorting to self-regulating self harm less enough that his arm was healing before this point.

- “I… I couldn’t.. I didn’t have enough energy to resist the Seal w-.. without a cult.” - Beetlejuice was tricking people to sign up for his cult under the guise of a “Loyalty Program”.

- “Why have they been going missing, then?” … “They swore they were choking on the taste of blood, bile rising in their throat as they felt their flesh between their teeth.” - Beetlejuice ate a few members of his cult. That’s why there’s missing persons in the town.

- “Someone’s hand gripped the back of their shirt, trying to pull them out of the kitchen. Panic spiked within them. Beetlejuice felt the blow to the back of their head, the horrible stabbing agony in their chest. That familiar, terrifying sensation they’d felt over and over and over and- ”- Beetlejuice had flashbacks to being killed during the loop over and over because Charles touched his old wound and it scared him, hence why he lashed out.

- “There’s still time. There has to be.” - Yet another “I Saw The TV Glow” reference.

- “ “Hello, pet.” Time’s up.” - Meant to envoke a terrifying line in “Yo, Girl” from Heathers the musical.

- “I’ll make you wish you could die!” - This line was originally going to be a more blatant reference to a line that Circus Baby from the FNAF series says often, “You won’t die, but you’ll wish you could.”

- “You always bounce ba- ” - Meant to be a reference to this scene from “Adventure Time” which I’ve… never seen…

- “Beetlejuice was distantly aware that Cyrus brought his claws up to his mouth to lick some of the blood off of them. “Choke on it,” they sputtered, although they weren’t sure if Cyrus could understand them through all of the blood that bubbled out of their mouth.” - Meant to be a reference to the horrific death of Captain Rhodes from “Day of the Dead”!

- “Beetlejuice wheezed out a last croak as Cyrus once again gripped their hoof and continued dragging them towards the portal.” - This is meant to evoke the gut-wrenching opening scene of “Scream”. Specifically, the part where Ghostface is dragging Casey away, and she is wheezing out her last breaths, which her parents can hear over the phone. The music in that scene never fails to make me cry. (I cried my eyes out rewatching that scene and imagining it playing when the Maitlands see the basement, but that’s not how things will happen…)

- “I’m sorry I was the one you loved.” - From “I’m Your Man” by Mitski.

The first chapter of Lonely Remnants, the fic about my CorpseJuice AU, is up! It’s called “Your body may be gone, I'm gonna carry you in, In my head, in my heart, in my soul”.

CorpseJuice is an AU where Lydia’s mother dies in a car accident, and her adopted brother, Lawrence, goes missing and is presumed dead. A year later, she stumbles upon a demon puppeteering his corpse! She and the demon work together to find out what happened the night of the wreck, and who her brother really was.

Please read the warnings attached to the start of the chapter before continuing, this fic is a doozy!

Here are the extras for chapter one!

- The lyrics for this first chapter are from “Ocean Breathes Salty” by Modest Mouse! It is very literal for Lydia and her lost family members. I wonder if it’ll come back later?

- “Lawrence Graham” - Since his last name can’t be Shoggoth, I decided to pick a last name that has relevance to the plot! But I can’t tell you what sort of relevance yet. Because spoilers.

- “He could look at someone and know in an instant just what to do to scare the absolute shit out of them.” - This is a sort of joking reference to Beetlejuice’s line in “That Beautiful Sound”, about “clean white shorts turning brown”!

- “Talking Heads and MCR” - I listen to one of these. The other my best friend listens to and says he thinks Beetlejuice would be really into.

- “the ‘TinyTimes Hardware store’” - Thank you @jessicawesker83 for this whimsical suggestion. I love it!

- “Barbara Butterfield” - thank you @bjfinn and @ten-chocolate-sundaes for helping me figure out a good maiden name for Barbara!

- “Lydia remembered her mother cheering for Lawrence when he’d finally asked them to “hang out” with him, seeing some sort of cheesy horror comedy flick with them.” - IT’S MY FIC AND I GET TO PICK THE ANACHRONISTIC MOVIE THEY SEE IN THEATERS!! They saw “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil” because I said so

- “One moment, Lydia and her mother were laughing and singing along to ‘Jump in the line’ by Harry Belafonte.” - This is, of course, a reference to the line in the musical where Lydia says that this was one of Emily’s favorite songs.

- “Only a portion of his left arm, and six liters of his blood were found in his stupid, beat-up old green 2001 Volkswagen Beetle.” - the most blood a human can lose and still survive is two liters. Also, get it? A Volkswagen Beetle? A green buggy?

- “Charles refused to pay for a cemetery plot, and certainly not one next to Emily.” - What an ass! I wonder why this is.

- “Jumping off the old bridge at the edge of town, into frigid waters, letting them carry her to wherever her home was now.” - This is a reference to Barbara and Adam’s death, and how Lydia planned to kill herself in the original film. It is also a reference to how she often called her mom “home” in the musical.

- “They sat huddled together and watched his favorite movies. ‘Zombieland’, ‘Groundhog Day’, ‘The Mask’.” - Haha, “Zombieland”. ‘Cause he’s a zombie now. Also yeah “Groundhog Day” is a sort of reference to LoopJuice, sue me. Notice how Lawrence only really likes comedies! He was actually pretty squeamish with blood and gore that wasn’t for the haunted house.

- “Barbara and Adam helped Lydia find a counselor that same day. Her name was Kerry, and although she was resistant at first, she’d helped Lydia tremendously.” - The name ‘Kerry’ is, of course, a reference to Barbara’s actor in the musical, Kerry Butler! I just think she’d have such a calming presence, and that she’d listen to you so well.

- “They both wore a necklace each; a simple chain with a ring attached. They got them shortly after the accident. Lydia had never gotten a good look at them, but she could take a guess as to what they were. (In June, she got her hands on the police report. A box with identical engagement rings had been found in Lawrence’s glovebox, and were handed off to “next of kin”.) Barbara and Adam never took the necklaces off.” - Ouchie. Are we connecting the dots here? Because I don’t like the image they’re makin’.

- Bellflowers mean everlasting love, forget-me-nots are pretty self explanatory. Also, bellflowers are purple! Lawrence loved purple and green.

- Sunflowers obviously represent happiness, which is a little ironic, but Lydia chose them more because they were her mother’s favorite.

- “A dirty, stained, shredded grey trench coat, the arms caked in dark splotches she could only hope was just mud. (They were black and russet brown, so probably not.) The left sleeve of his trench coat was tied off, most of that arm obviously missing. His hair was wild, stained green from what seemed to be moss growing on what little she could see of his face, as well as on his clothing and down his neck. A… somewhat familiar red button-up underneath, patterned with beetles, and tattered black slacks- ” - Yeah, he is dressed like Beetlejuice’s cemetery appearance in the movie! But he is not a KeatonJuice. The button-up and pants were what Lawrence was wearing when the crash happened, and the trench coat… let’s say the demon stole it.

- “C’mon, Scarecrow, don’t be so glum. I’ll be back before you know it.” - This was the last thing Lawrence ever said to Lydia before leaving for his “family emergency”.

- “Lars!” - Lydia’s own nickname for Lawrence.

- “Like he’d gargled a bowl of nails every day for the past century without any milk.” - Sorry not sorry for the SpongeBob reference.

- “His skin was a sickly sort of green, with moss patches growing on his face, and various sickly bruises dotting all of his visible skin.” … “His movements were stiff and robotic..” - Sorry, I studied forensic science for a few years, so there is a lot of gross dead body stuff in this fic that I will do my best to tone down. The “bruising” is livor mortis, or discoloration of the skin after death. The weird, stiff movements is from the demon being a freak as well as rigor mortis, or the stiffening of the joints/limbs after death.

- “Number 88, to be specific. We’re part of a big collective, see? A big ol’… mishmash of primordial goop.” - The demon’s true form is goo. The black stains on Lawrence’s face is it leaking out. This Beetlejuice is more Lovecraft than Dante’s Inferno. Also, #88 is a reference to the year the original film came out!

- “Let me take the driver’s seat!” - This is a reference to the song Alex Brightman sings in “Dead End: Paranormal Park” as his characters Pugsley and Temeluchus. The similarities were an accident.

- “Shuddering twitches wracked through it’s body, moving up from it’s legs, to it’s torso, to it’s shoulders, then it’s head, but it didn’t seem to care.” - The twitches and shakes are from both the demon being a weirdo (and AuDHD but we don’t have time to unpack that) and from algor mortis, or the body cooling after death.

- “Whatever-the-fuck. The.. it’s a chemical only found in brains. Gotta eat it or risk total rejection from the host.” - Yeah I kinda stole the idea from “Venom”. Yes there will be more things I stole from “Venom”. Let a creature (me) have fun and borrow things from their favorite rom-com!

I will eventually talk about all seven AUs. The autism is too strong. I’ll post my rants in order of what got the most votes. Unless I get any new votes in the next 3 (?) hours, the order will be DadJuice, RHPS, Harpy, DemonLydia, Necromancy, Count the Ways, Siren.

I’m very excited to share these universes! Some of them are more developed than others. Some have more art. Some have more plot and information. Some of them are current projects and others will probably rot in my notes app. I just hope everyone enjoys em! They’ll probably be posted over the next 1-2 weeks depending on when I finish getting stuff ready for them.

DadJuice AU (1/7)

Today I’ll be talking about my Beetlejuice dad AU, or DadJuice! There’s art at the end :) @possum-quesadilla

Here’s the DadJuice playlist.

Basic plot: 

Beetlejuice is a father. The plot is very Beetlelands-y. Barbara is the mother, and Beej and Adam are the dads. They’ve got two kids, Bellatrix and Orion. I haven’t written much about this au yet, but it’s essentially Beej and the Maitlands figuring out how to be parents. 

There’s some angst in it, with Beetlejuice being anxious that he’ll mess up his kids the same way Juno messed up him. Barbara was very anxious during her pregnancy, due to her past miscarriage. Beej tries to reassure her that their kids will be born dead anyways, but that doesn’t fully take away her anxiety.

Character info:

Bellatrix

She/her

She’s a very smart girl, and often is the one getting her brother out of trouble. She’s caring, logical, and pretty chill. She cares a lot for her family. She has a lot in common with Adam, and likes spending time with him. She likes watching him work on his model of the town. She's sort of expected to be the “calm kid”, which puts pressure on her. 

Orion

He/him

Orion is Bellatrix’s twin brother. He’s very high energy, and gets himself into trouble quite often. His main problem is that his mouth moves faster than his brain. He takes after Beetlejuice the most, both physically and mentally. He’s rowdy, funny, but also struggles with fitting in. Luckily, he’s got Barbara as a mom, and she always tries her best to help him out. He’s a really curious kid. He was put on a leash for a while. The green patches on his body are skin; he was just born like that. 

Orion and Bellatrix are, as my former science teacher once put it, oopsies children. When questioned by them, Beetlejuice calls them his surprise kids. 

An interesting thing about them is that they look like demons, have powers like ghosts, but age like humans. Born deads are very rare, Beetlejuice being one of the few ones, so everyone’s sorta learning about each other at the same time. They have some traits that are completely unique to them, like horn color. 

Lydia is like the fun aunt/babysitter. She loves hanging out with the kids, and they love hanging out with her. 

Beetlejuice wanted the kids to go to a neitherworld school, but Barbara and Adam wanted them to go to a human school. They ended up making a compromise. Kids go to a human school during the weekdays, and on some evenings and weekends, they go to a neitherworld school, where they can learn more about their demonic side.

Both Bellatrix and Orion have human disguises. Bellatrix’s disguise has more of Barbara’s features, while Orion’s disguise has more of Adam’s features.

The two generally have a good relationship, ignoring the arguments they have over tiny things. Those problems get resolved within 72 hours. When they do have big fights, they can last for a while.

I came up with this AU a year ago. The first time I drew Bellatrix, I was at a restaurant and I drew her with my finger on my phone.

Rocky Horror Picture Show AU (2/7)

Today I’ll be talking about my Beetlejuice Rocky Horror Picture Show AU, or Rocky Horror Beetle Show, or RHBS. Art at the end.

There’s no real playlist for this one, just listen to the RH/RHPS soundtrack.

Basically the plot of Rocky Horror Picture Show, just with Beetlejuice characters (and some ocs).

Beetlejuice is Frank N. Furter 

Adam is Brad Majors 

Barbara is Janet Weiss 

Delia is Columbia 

BJ (a beetlejuice clone oc thing) is Rocky 

Delores is Magenta

Charles is Dr. Scott

A humanized sandworm (Sandstorm “Stormy”) is Eddie

Otho is Riff-Raff 

Beetlejuice’s outfit is designed a bit differently, same for BJ. I wanted to include some black and white for both of them. I wanted to give BJ a sort of sewn together look, as well as make him look a bit less human. I don’t have a design for Stormy, and I don’t have a full design for Delia.

I didn’t add Lydia to this AU since I didn’t want to put a child in it. Since making the AU a year ago, the only characters that have been added are Delores and Stormy. There are a few differences in this AU to the original material (no incest and the transylvanians have more alien-y forms that come out a little after the dinner scene), but it’s pretty much the same otherwise. Beetlejuice, Delores, and Otho get cool alien designs because I said so. I don’t have much to say, as this is just a Beetlejuiced version of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Time for art!

Shilo (an OC), has been hunting down Beetlejuice (who is a harpy) for eight years. She eventually finds him and brings him back to her secluded cabin in the woods to study him. The two of them bond and eventually date. However, Shilo isn’t the only one who was tracking Beetlejuice down. His mother, Juno, has been searching for him for a while, and she won't rest until she gets him back.

Keep in mind that this information is mainly just for the first story. I’m working on the sequel for it, but I haven’t posted any chapters yet. Maybe I’ll make a part three just for talking about those sequel characters…

Character stuff:

Shilo

She/her

She’s 25. She’s always struggled to fit in, both with her peers and with her family. She ended up running away after a falling out with her parents, and she hasn’t returned home since. She is neurodivergent, and struggles a lot with social skills and obsession. Sometimes she gets so focused on one thing, she forgets to take care of herself. However, she’s also very strong, skilled, and independent. She’s very creative. She can also be rather stubborn, which can benefit or hurt her, depending on the situation.

Beetlejuice

He/him

He’s not completely sure how old he is, but he thinks it’s around 600 years. 

He’s not great in social situations. After having to live and deal with Juno and her abuse for so long, he hatched (pun intended) a plan to run away. He ended up getting caught, and as a result, he murdered Juno. He was on the run for a while after that, and eventually ended up in the forests of Vermont, where he stayed for a while. Then Shilo caught him. He’s got a lot of family issues, with his mom being abusive and neglectful and his dad being absent. He’s got some anger issues and a lot of trauma around fire.

Juno

She/her

She’s around 620 years old. 

Though female harpies are generally stronger and larger in this au, Juno was a runt. This caused her to be shunned by her flock members, as power and respect is given based on strength and size in her flock. She always felt that she deserved more. Juno, before her transformation, was a forest floor harpy and a member of the Canis Minor flock.

One night, she was approached by a demon (I won't name him for now) who promised that he’d grant her power, fame, and respect in exchange for her sleeping with him and keeping him company. She accepted, and the demon granted her phoenix powers. She could create and manipulate fire, she had a significantly longer life span (the average lifespan of a female harpy being around 200-250 years), she had stronger wings and sharp claws, and she could shapeshift. She was given very bright, warm feathers, which stood out and drew attention in her generally green environment. 

However, the power she had got to her head. She became abusive towards her demonic partner, who decided to match her energy. Neither of them were good to each other. Eventually, the time came for harpies to battle for the spot of leader (I’ll talk more about that after this). Juno took everyone down and became leader of the flock. Due to her unique powers, she didn’t give up her position until Beetlejuice killed her. Then her newest partner, Nat, took over. He’s currently the flock leader. 

Some fun facts about this AU because I need to talk about it:

Shilo is bisexual! It doesn’t get talked about much, unfortunately :( Beetlejuice is pansexual in this one.

Juno and Beetlejuice are the only ones of their kind, with Juno being the only phoenix harpy and Beetlejuice being the only phoenix/demon harpy.

Beetlejuice’s nest is based off of Iguazu Falls. I’d recommend looking it up, it’s a very beautiful place! May write a little story one day where Beetlejuice and Shilo go to his nest.

This AU is 9 months old today! 

This is the only AU that currently has fics for it. The fics are Birds of a Feather and Flock Together. FT hasn’t been posted yet. When I was writing BoaF, I knew I wanted a sequel called Flock Together.

If you haven’t already guessed, this is my favorite AU, followed very closely by the necromancy AU, which I’ll be talking about soon.

There are two characters taken from the cartoon in this AU— Nat and Donny, ToonJuice’s dad and brother. In this story, Nat is Beetlejuice’s step dad and Donny is his half brother. He hates both of them. They aren’t parts of the main story.

- The lyrics for this chapter’s title are from “Over the Moon” by Penelope Scott! (Thanks Cosmo <3) It’s meant to reflect the mindset Lydia has from the start, and the pivot to being all in Barbara and Adam experience.

- “They corralled it into a bathroom to change on it’s own, but it struggled to even get the trench coat off.” - It’s hard to do things with one arm!

- “She heard both of her adopted parents shriek after a minute or so, and the Shoggoth let out a startled yelp. Before she could go to assist them, Barbara and Adam were both scrambling out of the bathroom, looking rather green in the gills. Adam dry heaved in the kitchen sink while Barbara returned to the bathroom, having retrieved a first aid kit from under said kitchen sink. Lydia gently patted the man’s back, brows furrowed in concern. “… what happened?” Adam managed to say “his arm” between gags.” - His arm is suuuper gross. Lydia was shielded from it by her oh so brave guardians. (Also, the yelp was because Barbara and Adam freaking out startled the Shoggoth hehe)

- “.. the Shoggoth was finally dressed in an old band hoodie (Lawrence still had an MCR hoodie?) and basketball shorts.” - Of course. Once an MCR fan, always an MCR fan.

- “It was then that the three living humans realized his feet were now replaced with… some sort of paws. The Shoggoth seemed to catch them staring, as it titled his head and looked down to follow their gaze. “Oh!” It chuckled, once it had caught on. “Don’t worry about that. Ate one too many raccoons.” ” - Hmm. Weird! Perhaps this will come up later. Also it’s feet are a weird mashup of raccoon paw hand things and human feet

- Nails - Lawrence used to use sharpies to “paint” his nails instead of actually painting them.

- Dog - his childhood dog’s name was Kevin, a reference to Alex Brightman’s dog, but unfortunately I don’t think he’ll be brought up again.

- “Lydia saw her hesitate before she reached out to wrap her arms around the Shoggoth, using one hand to gently pet the top of his head. It melted into her arms, eyes slipping shut.” - This is something Barbara used to do to comfort Lawrence. The Shoggoth sort of remembers and is comforted by it.

- “Barbara lightly patted his back. “… we’ll figure it out.” ” - This is the moment Barbara and Adam decided they were all in with this strange zombie demon stuff.

- “The Shoggoth called a ‘see ya later!’ from the kitchen, mouth obviously full. Lydia heard Adam shouting for it to spit something out as the door shut behind her.” - The Shoggoth took a bite of the plate.

- “Lydia absolutely flunked the math test, despite how hard Adam had helped her study for it.” … “ “I think I failed the math test.” “Oh, honey, I’m sorry! After you two studied so hard for it and everything.” ” - this is a reference to the end scene in the original movie!

- “Lydia called out a loud “I’m home!” once she came into the townhouse, as per usual. Barbara called a quick little “in here!” in response from the living room.” … “It was then that the front door unlocked again, and Adam called out an “I’m home!” as he stepped inside. … Adam stepped into the living room shortly after Barbara called “in here!”.” - This tradition was started by Lawrence, because he was always paranoid his loved ones wouldn’t be there when he got home. Yay trauma!

- “Barbara and the Shoggoth were sat on the couch, both staring aptly at the TV screen. Her eyes were tinged with red. Lydia recognized the chaotic sounds of ‘Zombieland’ in an instant.” - Barbara cried and hugged the Shoggoth for a while before she showed it the movie. Adam did something similar.

- “The Shoggoth perked up, head whipping around in that direction. It flexed and unflexed his fingers over and over, eyes wide and a weird little smile tugging at his lips.” - It’s like a happy little puppy… it’s already so attached to the three of them!

- “ “There’s a chemical in brains that helps keep the body from decomposing,” the Shoggoth explained, and Lydia could swear it looked a little.. proud.” - It wanted to show off it’s knowledge to Adam.

- “ “And, um… just.. Lydia, dear, could you grab the Reese’s in the freezer?” Adam removed his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose. “Those are probably expired by now.” ” … “The Shoggoth really, really liked chocolate, apparently. (So did he.)” - Lawrence LOVED chocolate, especially Reese’s. Barbara and Adam didn’t have the heart to throw away the bag of them he left in the freezer after the accident, so it’s been there for about a year.

- “ “Like I said, we have an old cage from when I had Daniel-” “Your hamster,” the Shoggoth murmured, eyes still fixed on the container.” - ‘Daniel’ is a reference to the main character’s name in “Mrs. Doubtfire”, one of my favorite films ever but also the musical Adam’s original broadway actor is in now!

- “(They named the four of them, although Barbara told them not to get attached. Tallahassee, Columbus, Little Rock, Wichita.)” - After the main four characters in “Zombieland”.

- “The Shoggoth paused in it’s struggle with it’s fork to give her a perplexed look.” - It’s hard doing things with one hand!!! Help it please

- “Barbara and Adam exchanged a Look. The Shoggoth glanced between the two of them with furrowed brows.” … “Another Look. The Shoggoth seemed a little irritated.” - Lawrence used to be included in the Looks. Some part of the Shoggoth recognizes that, and it frustrates it that it can’t understand them now.

- The lyrics for this chapter’s title are from “Flowers” from Hadestown. Now we’re seeing our Eurydice’s perspective! Very literal. At one point, all Beetlejuice can remember is flowers.

Time loop, trauma, invisible. All of the things Beej hates. Also, the inability to be seen is inspired by a scene in “The Haunting of Hill House” where Nell is ‘missing’, but she was right there. They just couldn’t see her.

- “Had he really looked that bad during the fight? No wonder they were scared of him now.” - Yeah he looked pretty insane, as mentioned in Lydia’s POV in chapter 10.

- “What did they think of him, now that he was gone? What were they saying?” - This line, along with a few later, are inspired by the songs “Who Was She” and “Who Is She (Reprise)” from “Centaurworld”.

- “(The words ‘I love you’ don’t leave his lips. He didn't know them yet.)” - Yeah he didn't really hear the words “I love you” for a long, long time.

- “The demon-… They-…. Beetlejuice knew there was more, but try as they might, they couldn’t remember it.” - This was Beetlejuice starting to forget his own name/identity.

- “Panic coursed through the demon as they wheezed out unsteady breaths.” - Him unable to breathe and wheezing the whole time is meant to emulate the ending of “I Saw The TV Glow”.

- “They… remembered… flowers. Purple, yellow, green, red, orange, and blue.” - This, of course, calls back to the first chapter of Time’s Arrow, as well as the title lyrics for this chapter. Also the new blue is for Ash :)

- “Oh well. You made this bed. Now lay in it.” - This is meant to be a reference to the ending of the title song for this chapter.

Harpy AU part 2 (3/7)

Here is part 2 of the Beetlejuice Harpy AU! Hope you enjoy. This talks a lot about how governments work. I can go more into culture later if anyone is interested in that.

In a place inspired by Iguazu Falls, there is a large cluster of almost 30 harpy flocks. Despite them all living in the same place, flocks are different in their own way. They have unique languages, genetic traits, and governments. There are four main regions, treetop, forest floor, wetlands, and cliffside.

Flocks are named after constellations and one flock will have between 16 and 28 harpies. Flocks are usually 4-7 families, but that’s not always the case. Some flocks, like Capricornus, are split between two different regions. Other flocks are so similar to each other, it can be hard to differentiate between them.

Treetop

Some traits of treetop harpies include: longer claws/talons, more articulate joints, wings designed for soaring, above average hand-eye coordination and depth perception. Unfortunately, they are more susceptible to heart problems. They typically have weaker leg muscles.

Lives: In tree houses.

General diet: bugs, birds, fruit

Treetop flocks: Apus, Aquila, Ara, Corvus, Draco, Volans.

Forest Floor

Some traits of forest floor harpies include: shorter claws/talons, stronger and longer legs, fluffy feathers at their ankles, and smaller, weaker wings. They’re more prone to vitamin d deficiency.

Lives: in huts made from wood, leaves, and mud.

General diet: birds, bugs, small critters, fruits, nuts, seeds, plants

Forest Floor flocks: Canis Major, Canis Minor, Centaurus, Lepus, Lupus, Orion.

Wetlands

Some traits of wetlands harpies include: long claws/talons, webbed hands and feet, water resistant feathers, wide feet, can hold breath for around 6-10 minutes

Lives: in burrows by the river

General diet: fish, birds, insects

Wetlands flocks: Eridanus, Hydra, Aquarius, Capricornus, Cetus, Cygnus, Delphinus, Dorado, Grus, Pisces

Cliffside

Some traits of cliffside harpies include: very long claws/talons, great hand/foot strength, prehensile tails, large hands and feet, great night vision

Lives: in dens created in cliffsides. Homes are typically connected by a tunnel system.

General diet: birds, small critters, whatever vegetation they can get

Cliffside Flocks: Equuleus, Hercules, Mensa, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor

I’ll focus on Canis Major and Canis Minor for now, as those two are similar and Juno is from Canis Minor. These two flocks are very close. They have a similar language, and the communities are very close knit. They have their differences, though.

Canis Major

There is one leader and one assistant.

Power is given based on which harpies are best at hunting. Every year on the summer solstice, the ten best contenders are released into the forest. They spend a day hunting. The winner is the harpy who brings back the most food. The assistant is the harpy who brings back the second most food.

If more than half of the flock decides that the leader isn’t a good fit, a vote will be held on the autumn equinox. If more than half of the harpies vote out the leader, the assistant will take over as leader until a better harpy is selected by the flock.

Members of the Canis Minor flock are allowed to take over as Assistant. They can be promoted to Leader if members of the Canis Major flock allow it.

Canis Minor

There is only one leader.

Power is given based on which harpy is strongest. Age and relations are determining factors as well. Harpies in this flock are able to sign up to fight. They will fight until the five strongest are selected. Every 4 years on the autumn equinox, an event called The Crimson Week happens. On the first day, the weakest of the five strongest will battle the current Leader. On the next day, the second weakest will battle the current Leader. Third day, third weakest will battle, fourth day, second strongest will battle. The fifth and sixth days are used for the current Leader to rest and recover. Finally, they battle the strongest of the five. Whoever wins is the leader.

If more than half of the flock decides that the leader isn’t a good fit, a vote can be held at any time. If more than half of the flock votes out the leader, the spot will go either to the leader’s mate, the oldest member of the flock, or the second strongest in the flock.

There are 27 other flocks and I don’t want to talk about all of them right now, so I’ll just do a general thing for ‘em. If anyone is interested in this, I can absolutely go into more detail about other parts of this.

Treetop

Power is generally given based off of age, with older harpies having more respect and power. Younger harpies are expected to care for their elders.

Wetlands

Power is generally given based on which harpy can construct the safest and most efficient houses. As these harpies live right next to rivers, it is very important that homes can’t be easily destroyed by water.

Cliffside

Power typically isn’t given to one person. Instead, communities work together to build dens, gather resources, and keep other flocks safe.

Chapter 6- Calm Before the (Fire) Storm

Orange- anxious, indigo- depressed

“(although, if he was being honest, he really just loved the feeling of Shilo's hands in his hair.)”

Poor guy is so horribly touch starved.

“They’d started watching a new movie every night. Tonight’s film was Little Shop of Horrors.”

Added this in because I love this movie!!!! I will go insane if I can’t shout out my other interests in my work.

“HE IS!!! I love shy, clumsy dudes with glasses,” he swooned.”

I think he’d be pretty fond of Adam if they met.

“Beetlejuice hummed in thought. “I guess I like a gal who’s self sufficient. And funny. And shows me the stuff she writes, even if I can’t read it. And lives in a remote cabin. Oh, and I love when a pretty girl tranquilizes me, ties me up, throws me in her car, and kidnaps me. I swear, that’s the hottest shit. Wouldn’t you agree, Shi?” He smirked. Shilo rolled her eyes.”

The story of how they met isn’t the cutest depending on how it’s told.

“Beetlejuice had taken a liking to fake flirting with Shilo. She loved to brush it off and scoff, but deep down… She didn’t hate it.”

…!

“Beetlejuice, what did I say about smelling me? It’s creepy.”

This is a semi regular occurrence.

“Experimentally, she dragged a hand up and down the feathers on his back... Immediately, he leapt up, the feathers on his back and wings blossoming into shades of light pink and yellow.”

Back touching is a very intimate gesture in harpy culture.

“He fought to free himself from the fuzzy fabric, but his feathers fluffed up and sent him further into his frenzy.”

I FUCKING LOVE ALLITERATION. Is this sentence a bit much? Probably. Don’t care though.

“Shilo picking at her hair.”

She’s got some hair pulling problems (just like me !!!)

“I did. When I told you about her, there was a… tiny detail I left out. Real small, don’t even matter that much! Honest!”

“If you had asked a seventeen year old Shilo if, in eight years, she saw herself planning out the murder of her best friend’s psychotic mother, she would’ve asked if you were mentally disturbed. But now, here she was, looming over a whiteboard with a marker in hand, writing the title: “how to kill beej’s crazy fire bird mom”.

Safe to say she’s had a bit of character development in those years.

“They swapped ideas between each other, until they eventually created a list that consisted of: “water?”, “stab !!”, “wait until she’s senile (may not happen within Shilo’s lifetime)”, “feed her to a wild animal”, “iron”, “holy water”, “garlic”. As much as Shilo insisted that garlic was for vampires, Beetlejuice was set on adding it as an option.”

Beetlejuice has already used a few of these options, but it never hurts to try again!

“Even though he was asleep, his head still shuffled until it rested in its favorite spot— right over her heart.”

He loves the sound of her heart beating <3

Chapter 7- A Tender Moment

“Shilo picked tonight’s movie. A human monster romance movie. She was always good at finding those.”

I didn’t have a specific movie in mind for this one. If anyone’s got some recommendations, lmk.

“Shilo was cut off by Beetlejuice roughly shoving his lips against hers. He rested one hand over hers and placed the other on her waist. Oh my god we’re kissing and it’s actually happening and I don’t hate it and he doesn’t hate it and jesus christ is that his tongue getting shoved down my throat—“

Woo they kissed! I’ve been planning on writing this scene for a long time. It’s also my first time writing anything with romance, so that’s neat.

“Remember when I said harpies don’t kiss in our culture?”

”Yeah?”

”I lied.”

He had to convince her somehow

“he jumped off the couch and scampered away, pink feathered and blushing and giggling like a schoolgirl. The blush on his feathers matched the pink on Shilo’s face.”

Not pictured is him tripping over a rug running to the stairs. He jumped into bed and screamed for two minutes straight after this.

“She changed into some warm sweatpants and a tank top.”

Also not pictured is the fact that he secretly watched her change. I decided to omit that. I de-perved him a lot in this fic.

“As she walked to the side of their bed, she dragged her fingers along Beetlejuice’s back, watching in amusement as his wings fluttered and he jerked his head up with a high pitched trill, forgetting he was supposed to be sleeping.”

Another action that’s based off my cats!!
